Long and Winding Road is the Beatles....I saw you mention Elton in title of your other thread- are you trying to say he was there??
I also just noticed that Elton John played at the Versace event 2 days ago that Prince was at...(pics posted in M & M forum)...coincidence? And, he is playing in Vegas this week as well. [Edited 2/10/07 11:09am] [Edited 2/10/07 11:30am] Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"

Not only was Elton John there -- he sang The Long and Winding Road as the first encore of the evening.
I'm too exhausted too write a full review now. (I'm on about three hours of sleep.) But other than that... At the aftershow, Sheila E joined Prince and the band for Oye Como Va, Mongo Santamaria's Afro Blue, and an absolutely off the friggin' chain jam on Get On the Boat. Also at the aftershow, I was standing close enough to Prince to pick his pocket. More later. Right now I'm deciding whether to delay flying back...so I can do it all again tonight. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Okay...so...Friday was a very looooong night. But Prince definitely got me Satisfied.
We started with dinner at 3121 Jazz Cuisine. Got there early for our reservation. They weren't quite ready for us when we walked in, but as we were getting a glass of wine, the hostess came over and said she could seat us. We were in the main dining room. It wasn't terribly full when we got there, but the hostess put us right next to two gentlemen -- one of whom looked vaguely familiar. As soon as I heard his accent, I knew it was Swa. He was with Purplelectric from HQ. Very nice guys -- Sweetie and I had a great time chatting and "racing" dinner with them. (They'd gotten there a little earlier and their first courses arrived just as we were sitting down. But eventually we caught up. ) The food was excellent. The service was polite and efficient, but not overbearing. It was a great start to the evening. Afterward, we made our way over to the club for the show. We were seated around 10:15, which left us with a bit of a wait. But DJ Rashida was spinning tunes, which were accompanied by great vintage video of legendary Black entertainers (including Josephine Baker, Bill Robinson, Lena Horne, and Cab Calloway). It was amazing how the videos meshed with the (mostly) Prince music being played. I've seen people on other boards criticize the job Rashida does at these shows, but I thought she did great. I don't know whether she is the one who put together the entire show (music and video), but she kept it rolling and really got the crowd worked up. Nearly every song that came on elicited excited "ooohs" and "ahhhhs" from the house -- which was packed. As it got closer to show time, the video accompaniment became more "Princely," though it was still random. Finally, they played the testimonial video from his induction into the UK Hall of Fame...and then it was on. The curtain went up...and we heard the opening strains of "Joy in Repetition." One of the Twinz preceded him out the sort of "garage" door that comprises the back of the set. And then...Prince. He had on a black, knee-length coat, a white shirt with pleated ruffles alolng the front placket, and black trousers. The hair was divoon. He didn't play guitar for the first part of the song -- that was the part (I'm sure someone has written about in the past) where he and "Twin" sing and sort of act it out. I don't think it really works -- especially when they get to the part about "in the alley over by the curb" because there's absolutely no physical contact between them. They just kind of stand there. But anyway... He came to the edge of the stage then and went into his usual blistering guitar. It was awesome (as it always is), but seemed shorter than I've seen it in the past. That may be the result of trying to "middle ground" it. From there, he went into the rocked out "Anotherlover..." he played for the Super Bowl presser (yes, even the part where he played the guitar around Miss Twin again). This is one of my favorite songs...so I was thrilled to hear it again live. Now, I have to crib a bit from Swa's review at HQ because I don't keep setlists. From here, he played "7," The Beatles' "Come Together," and "Girls and Boys" -- all of which got the crowd very whipped up. Imagine a packed house doing the "hand dance" from the G&B scene in UTCM. It was quite a sight. He slowed things down a bit with "Satisfied." He walked through the top tier of VIP, coming within about two feet of me. (Breathe, Genesia...breathe...) He proceeded to the back of the house, where he sang the rest of the song, then launched into "Down by the Riverside" as he made his way through the top tier of the other side of the house. As the band took off on a jam, Prince left the stage briefly, changing only his coat -- to a slightly shorter black one with a stylized, mirror-image "3121" wrapping around both sides. The change was fitting -- because at this point, he played a rollicking "Lolita," followed immediately by "Black Sweat," which continues to amaze me in its live form. I sensed that he didn't want to get too deeply into 3121 mode at that point, because he swung right into a rocked-out version of "Kiss" -- much to the delight of the audience. From there...it was "Musicology" and oh, baby -- was there a lot of booty shaking going on at that point. (Not just mine, either.) He could have sung the ABCs at that point and the house would've given him a Grammy for it -- he had everyone right where he wanted them. The band jammed on "Pass the Peas" for a bit, as Prince left the stage for another wardrobe change. It was a full one this time -- he came back in a fire-engine, lawdhavemuhcy red suit that almost killed me. (Ain't no color I love on that man more than red.) He had his spare change on his collar and cuffs again and even though I've dogged that look in the past, I didn't even care. He took things down at that point with the "Gotta Broken Heart Again." People, this is the jam. He stripped that song down to its bittersweet essence. If you ever have the good fortune to hear this live, you will be moved to tears. Sweetie actually had to hand me a napkin from the table. He didn't keep us "there" for long, though -- bringing the tempo back up with "Cream," "U Got the Look," and after a shout out to Elton John (who was sitting in a booth at the back of the house), "3121." Prince then left the stage and we all got ready for the encores that were sure to follow. Suddenly, there's a commotion and we realize that Elton John is on his way to the stage. He came right past us -- and Sweetie shook his hand, which made his night (Sweetie's, not Sir Elton's ). "Do you think he'll sing?" we asked each other. And sho nuff... Suddenly, Elton is onstage and does a beautiful take on "The Long and Winding Road." He was in excellent voice and the crowd was completely enthralled and enraptured. Afterward...our man was back to cap the evening with a "heaven help us" version of "Crazy." People were just going nuts -- dancing and singing along. He left us wanting more with a rendition of "Nothing Compares 2 U" that had me blubbering again. (Napkin, please... ) And then...The Aftershow. Stay tuned. Although I won't write a long review, the 2/9 show for Prince was freaking amazing.
Elton John sang "Long and Winding Road" with Prince's Band (he didn't play piano). It looked like Prince was checking out Elton's performance by sitting toward stage right. When the "Crazy" song by Gnarlas Barkley was covered, Elton was hanging out on stage during the song (I don't know if he knew what to do), Prince however did start playing his guitar toward the end of the song. During "Nothing Compares 2 U" Elton was gone, but Prince rocked the house.

I have no idea how it happened...but we (Me, Sweetie, Swa, Purplelectric and Purp's friend Michelle) ended up sitting right at Prince's elbow for the aftershow. When we were shown to our seats, I looked down and there were Prince's guitar pedals not five feet away -- along with the Hohner and the blue Fender. And there was no one in front of us. (My face ---> )
At about 3:00, the lights went down. The band went into an awesome jazz/funk jam. (Song names are going to be sketchy here -- it was a true jam with everything overlapping and running together.) Mike and Renato did some amazing solo work -- as did everyone else. (I don't know who's playing trombone and trumpet right now -- but Cora was on drums and Josh was on base.) And then...at 3:20 (I know the time because we had a pool on what time he would start playing )...Prince came out. He had on the "Black Sweat" outfit -- shiny black suit and mustard yellow shirt, with black boots. He picked up his guitar and wailed a bit, then set the guitar down and walked back over into the "sun room" where his friends were sitting. Now, I'm not sure if it was before or after that break that he tried "Wasted Kisses." He was trying to get the audience to sing, "Why did I waste my kisses on you, baby? Why did I waste my kisses on you now?" but it just didn't take. I was singing (and was close enough that he heard -- he gave me a little smile), but one person does not a choir make, so he solo'd and left it. After a short bit...he came back out -- and this time, he stayed out. The music got crazy hot at that point. He did "All the Critics Love U in Las Vegas" and several other songs that escape me (we were exhausted -- but still dancing like maniacs ). He launched into a 70s jam with "Sweet Thing," with lead vocals by "Shelby J," as he's calling her. At the end of the second verse, she came over to our little group and held her hand out to me. I took it and we sang, "Don't want your mind...don't want your money...these words I say they may sound funny...but oh...sweet thing...oh, you know you're my everything..." together. I was too through at that point -- but they weren't. They actually got the house singing on this one -- and it was great. More 70s stuff followed, including The Commodores "Machine Gun," "Play That Funky Music" (which got everyone to their feet), and "Rollercoaster." When Prince started that one, he sang "Rollercoaster...of love..." and yours truly pops up with "Say what?" I was only person who said it and even though I wasn't that loud, I was close enough that he heard me and gave a little sidelong "Damn, girl!" kinda glance and added his own "Say what" and chuckled. Well, by this time, we were all suitably sweaty, so he took a little break. People drifted back to their seats and some actually left ( never leave 'til the house lights come up, folks)! And then came a very surreal moment where one of the techs carried out a set of timbales. Dare we hope? Yes! Out walks Prince...with Sheila E behind him. OMFG! The band starts Santana's Oye Como Va and they let 'er rip. From there...they went seamlessly into Afro Blue (one of my all-time favorite afro-cuban jams by Mongo Santamaria). It was mellow and hot, all at the same time. They brought that in for a safe landing and then rocketed into "Get On The Boat." Oh, my word. The horns were on point, Sheila let rip on the timbales, and people danced themselves into an absolute frenzy. And then...a smidgen after 5:00...it was over. We were all exhausted, but ecstatic. My man had to practically carry me to the cab (okay, he only carried my shoes) and we barely made it to our hotel before we crashed. It was a night of absolute magic. Hard to imagine anything topping it -- ever. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

[Edited 2/11/07 16:19pm] Nope. The room was really dark -- so even though I could see that a woman came into the little "solarium" where his friends were sitting (he gave her a hug), I didn't know it was Sheila 'til I read another report that said he was sitting on the arm of her chair. Okay, you've gotten me TOTALLY hype for this coming weekend. I'll be there for All Star Weekend but decided to go to the Friday and Sunday concerts/aftershows and probably Saturday's aftershow. I'm a big basketball fan but a HUGE Prince supporter since i was 9 so that's 25 years and counting. So guess what, DAMN some basketball!!! I'ma be all about that lil genius this weekend and I can't wait. Thanks for the report!

If you don't mind standing at the after show, you can still:
*Enjoy the EXCELLENT 3121 cusine - in the Jazz Room (and listen to the stylings of a nice house band), meet a friend of Prince's (and be invited by her to sit in her reserved booth at the aftershow) and receive a chocolate 3121 cd directly from the Lena the Executive Chef (as a friendly jesture b/c you were cool to her and you a have a person in common), and meet some cool a** Orgers (saw Genesia and had dinner with Vannessabfly and Insatiable930). *Take in the show - in the very front and center (with Prince and one of the Twinz throwing you a smile or two during the performance because you are so incredibly tall with giant curly hair...they couldn't not look at you if they tried ), get a guitar pick from one of Prince's people (who was sitting in the pit right in front of you) b/c you were fun and polite, and get a refreshing cup of champagne from one of the cool a** Orgers. *Go to the after show - without waiting in the after show line, sit in a reserved booth, walk by Prince, move to a seat (with co-workers) that is 3 feet from Prince and Sheila E, go stand with Genesia and fan yourself and accidentally bump hands with Prince while he is singing, see Sheila perform, talk to Mya (one of the Twinz), and speak to Sheila E at the end. All for...under $312.10!!!!! It was all very incredible. P.S. 2Elijah was right, "it pays to be nice to people." The majority of my good fortune and hook ups came from being cool with people. Thanks to all!

Great review Genesia, I was at this aftershow as well was in line since 1:00am and was able to get into the main room, I was seated in the back booths against the wall. It was very dark in there, I am a little selfish and want to be able to see Prince, but the music was awesome. A lot of people, VIP's I guess, were let into the main room before the people that were in line and I just thought that was wrong but thats just he way things are done I guess. If you can get into this show do it it's great!!!!! Rhythm floods my heart♥The melody it feeds my soul

I was among those who got seated early ("VIP"), but I was lucky b/c I knew some people and I ended up meeting the right people. I sucks, but this world is very 'who you know', but more importantly...'who knows you.'

We were among those people. We aren't VIPs -- and we don't "know" anyone. Where we ended up was purely a matter of luck -- being in the right place at the right time. Don't think I don't appreciate our good fortune. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
