Places to stay that are nice but not expensive ? where? Can anyone help me on where to stay out there. I don't want to pay a lot of money because I'm going to both shows. However, I don't want a bug infested nasty place either. Thanks for you assistance. Peace

The Orleans is nice, and around $150 a night for next weekend. Much cheaper than the Rio, and a bit off the strip (which I like, easier to get into and out of). There is a shuttle to the strip and plenty of taxis.

I stayed at the Rennaissance on NYE and it was GREAT. It is NOT a casino and is a smoke-free hotel. I don't gamble and I'm allergic to smoke so this was heavenly. It's a two year old hotel near the convention center and owned by Marriott. Every cabbie kept telling me that their steakhouse Envy is the best in the city. But the rooms were great, flat screens in every room and awesome beds.

Sometimes you can get good deals on Vegas.com or hotels.com.

There is a Mcdonald's in Vegas and sometimes the buffets at some of the hotels are good deals.

yeah, i'd recommend staying at the Gold Coast...it's right next to the Rio.
i don't know how much it is but its an older hotel so it shouldn't be too bad.

i'm in my bed at the gold coast right now. what an amazing weekend!!!!
the gold coast will match any specific daily (not average) rate you find on the internet. i found 2 nights for under $200 on priceline and they matched. it is right next door to the rio and has a free shuttle to the barbary coast on the strip.

Keep in mind too, that if you made arrangements for the Gray Shuttle to pick you up very early in the morning to take you back to the airport, and you are staying far off the strip, and even though you paid them round trip to bring you to your hotel on your arrival and to pick you back up, if they do not have a lot of pickups in that area very early in the morning, especially on a Sunday morning, they may not show up. It is better to get a taxi to take you back to the airport. I was told this by a lady who works for the Gray Shuttle service. So just be aware of this. But yes, I found it better to stay in a hotel off the strip closer to the Rio or if you get a good deal to stay at the Rio, then go for it.

I have friends who've stayed there and they say it is a perfectly fine place. Nothing fancy, but it's clean and well-kept. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

The Rio last Thursday was $90.00 and Friday $120.00. Prices depend on conventions in town and room availability. The taxi from the airport was $8.00 not including tip. Leaving the Rio to the airport, it was more than double as we must've gotten the scenic route. There's also an added fee of some kind for departure. Be sure to keep track of the cab fare. Next weekend is the "concrete/construction" convention according to one of the cab drivers.
There's also a monorail system between some hotels which saves on cab fare. It doesn't connect to the Rio, though. There is a shuttle between the Rio and other hotels owned by the same corporation on the strip. I don't know if you have to be a guest to use it or not. If you're attending a show it may be complimentary. Ask the Rio. it would save on paying a taxi. [Edited 1/14/07 9:28am]
