Roy Ayers @ 3121 Wednesday Jan 10th Roy Ayers will be performing this Wednesday @ 3121. School's in !!! www.royayers.com http://hem.passagen.se/da...nglish.htm Roy Ayers was during the 1960s one of the most prominent and leading jazz vibraphone players in America. During the 1970s and 80s he came to change his focus and became one of the leading figures in r n'b and jazz/funk. The 1990s has once again brought him into a new direction and he is now regarded being one of the greatest innovators of the acid jazz movement. His music has often been described as being years ahead of it's time. Roy E. Ayers was born on October 9, 1940 in Los Angeles, CA. He grew up in a musical family were his father played trombone and his mother piano. At the age of five he got his first piano lesson by his mother and by that, a first introduction to the wonderful world of music. He started to play the piano and before young Ayers could spell his name, he was jamming hot bogie-woogie riffs. At the age of five he received a vibes set as a gift from the famous vibes player Lionel Hampton. It would, however, take 12 years, till he was 17, before he started using the instrument on a more serious level. As his interest for the vibraphone grew, he got more and more involved in the west coast's lively jazz-scene. He started playing with artists like Curtis Amy (1962), Jack Wilson (1963-67), Chico Hamilton and Gerald Wilson Orchestra (1965-66). In 1966 bass player Reggie Workman persuaded Roy into a jam with flute player Herbie Mann at the club Lighthouse at Hermosa Beach, CA. The jam session evolved into becoming a steady four year gig with Mann at the Lighthouse. It also brought Ayers into the direct limelight, which attracted him an enormous attention. During this period he also got a wider musical perspective and got interested in other kinds of music forms than the be-bop he grew up with. After contributing on Mann's hit album," Memphis Underground", and after recording three own solo recordings on Atlantic with Mann as producer, Ayers left Mann's group in 1970 and moved to Manhattan, New York. In New York he formed his own group, nowadays a quite famous constellation by the name of Roy Ayers Ubiquity.

Wow! Prince sure has good taste in music. It's like he's pulling folks straight from my CD collection.
I LOVE Roy Ayers - his solo stuff, the Ubiquity stuff - all of it. Now all I need is Mandrill and I'll have to return to 3121! perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

Know what you mean, It's like giving us a Musicology lesson and bringing back "real music". I like that he is bringing in "70s" artists to perform at his club...the era of "real music by real musicians"...oh yeah, you're right, "Mandrill" would be cool too...a little "Ohio Players" wouldn't hurt either..ouch! He don't want the Ohio Players at 3121. Their Blue Nun bill will suck up all the profits. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Trust me -- I know someone who booked them for an event once. They polished off a lot o' wine and played very little. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Did anyone go?
I wonder if in a year or two we'll hear more stories from artists who played at or were going to play at the 3121 club. I can imagine a few might be annoyed if they feel they weren't promoted, Corinne Bailey Rae intimated she couldn't even get hold of Prince! Would be a shame, surely a music lovers paradise - Roy Ayers playing at a club run by Prince.

i have been going to the club EVERY wed. religiously since it has been open, but last night i worked and was the first night i couldnt go sorry, wish that i had story to tell you all... but i will tell you this... my husband is one of the promoters for the club, and this right here is why these wonderful artists dont get promoted well at all(except for a bit on the radio and flyering thro the streets THE NIGHT BEFORE AND OF) and the gal who is above my man says that prince is so spur of the moment, he will pick the artist he wants on a monday or tuesday before they preform that wed.(in the short time the club has been open, this leads to artists canceling sometimes since it is such short notice.) kinda crappy, but are you suprised? truely my man is out there hustlin the few nights he knows about it tho! if anyone is in the vegas area Wed. nights, let me know tho, i will get anyone free tickets to the wed. night extravaganzas!
ps-i have seen prince just hanging out at least three times or more on a wed. show... behind the soundboard, in the VIP, right next to the stage by the stairs... something he doesnt do on friday and saturday nights when he preforms of course:)
