The Time, Biloxi MS September 2, 2006 review

I went and saw the Time at the Beau Rivage casino in Biloxi, MS on Saturday September 2, 2006. This was show # 28 and oh what a show it was.

I didn't learn about this show until the very last minute. We already had made plans to see the show in Marksville, LA the following night so we jumped on this one as well. No doom and gloom this time. I was actually able to get the extra day off from work and we had our travel plans set up for once. My cohorts in crime, Jason and Ashley showed up at my house in Pensacola, FL around 6 p.m. We made the 2 hour drive with to Biloxi with no problems. Got something to eat and went to check out the club. There was no admission to the club, it was a strictly first come first serve basis, once it was full nobody else was getting in. We went to the floor to sit at one of the tables and they were all reserved so we went to the second level, sat down and had a drink since we had an hour or more to kill. Well turns out, the second level was also going to be reserved as soon as they were done serving dinner. we really didn't care since we wanted to stand on the floor in front of the stage. Well what sucked is they weren't letting anybody stand on the floor. WTF. Like it was really going to stay empty once the show started. We went and stood at a decent spot on the second level and waited. Anita and her sister showed up and joined us in our spots. We saw Monte come across the floor and spoke to him for a minute. Some Jackass guy that worked for the club came and told me I needed to remove my hat. I found this to be odd since I had been wearing it for over an hour and this was the first I had heard of it. When I told him this he was like its OK during dinner, but not after. That made alot of sense to me. NOT! Anyway I just brushed it off and got ready to enjoy the show.

I was really looking forward to this show, even more than normal. I had been tipped off ahead of time that there were going to be some changes to the setlist. I also saw the setlist for the show in Detroit a few days before, but I wasn't going to believe it until I saw it. That and the last 4 times we had seen them, they were all outdoor festival shows so it was nice to be inside with no opening act.

Here is the line up
Morris Day- Vocals and Cool
Jerome Benton- Vocals, percussion and general mischief maker
Jellybean Johnson- Drums
Monte Moir- Keyboards
Stanley"Chance" Howard- keyboards
Ricky "Freeze" Smith- Bass
Tori "Freakjuice" Ruffin- Guitar

Surprisingly, right at the 10 p.m. scheduled starting time the band was introduced and the familiar ticking started
Here is the setlist with my ever insightful comments to follow:

1. The Skillet-FINALLY!!!!!
2. Cool
3. Get it up
4. Pandemonium
5. Chocolate
6. Wild and loose
7. The Stick
8. Blondie!!!!
9. My Drawers!!!!
10. Fishnet
11. The oak tree
12. Jerk Out
13. 777-9311
14. Girl-small instrumental bit
15. Sometimes I get lonely- small instrumental bit
16. Gigolos get lonely too
17. If the kid can't make you come-extended instrumental
18 The walk
19. The Bird
encore
20. Jungle Love

Oh man what can I say. Tori came out with all this weird guitar and I was hoping it was really going to happen and this wasn't a dream. The very second I was absolutely sure that it was the Skillet I shouted "YES" and gave Jason a high five and it was on. Both our jaws dropped. That shit was tight as hell. This is my favorite song by them that they had yet to perform live and I've been begging, pleading and everything else in between for the last 10 years to get these guys to add it to the setlist and they open with it!!! Hell my old signature on amp use to be "I want to see the Time play the skillet" so this was HUGE. I think I came right then and there and could have died a happy man, but wait the show was just getting started. Sometime after Cool, Jerome called everyone out to the floor so we got down there and took our traditional spot in front of Tori. All the fellas spotted us and were messing with us through out most of the show, especially Jerome and Tori. Pandemonium got us excited again since it has been a good 8 years since I've seen them play it plus its a rocking number. Chocolate followed and that guitar was funky as hell. When they ripped into Blondie a few songs later, I was as hyped as a mug(that ones for you Ashley : ) followed by My Drawers. This show fucking rocked and it rocked hard. They did the fake pause on 777-9311, not the long version from back in the day, but certainly longer than they have been performing it in the last couple of years and if you haven't noticed I like all the guitar I can get. Jason and I were both taking pictures like crazy since we were so close and the lighting was good. We were lucky enuff to get pictures of all the band members at one point or another which rarely ever happens. During the drum solo on 777-9311, Jerome came and grabbed my camera and took a picture of Jellybean(and it came out pretty good) Tori stepped away from the mic and said "have yall ever heard that one?" We got a good laugh out of that. During Sometime I get lonely, Jerome gave Anita the mic and let her sing some of the lyrics. She had a brain freeze though and couldn't remember the name of the song when he asked. He turned to me and said " I know you know" and walked off. Too funny. Anita got on stage for the Bird and I know she enjoyed that. They came to get us as well, but Jason and I turned it down and Ashley was hiding as usual. Everybody who reads these things know what my least favorite part of a Time show is, but I couldn't complain tonight with everything else they played. The show ended at exactly 10:15 with Tori making this scary as hell pose for Jason to take a picture. Man that picture is a trip and probably needs to go on the cover of the next freak Juice album.

We waited around for about half an hour or so to see if they would come out. I snagged Tori's setlist and Jason got Freeze's from the other side of the stage. Jason finally sneaked back stage, but they had already left. Anita and her sister left, but we decided to hang out for a little while longer to see if we could meet up with the fellas. We wandered around the casino and finally tried to call Tori, but got his voice mail. Jason and Ashley went one direction and I stayed where I was at. While they were gone, I spotted Jerome going by so I went and tried to find him. He was with a group of ten women when I finally caught up with him. He introduced me to them and generously said a bunch of nice things about me. he said he would be back later and left with his harem. I met up with Jason and Ashley and waited around for awhile. Then we decided to go back in the other direction. It was looking like Ashley's string as our good luck charm was about to end and she wasn't too happy about it, but then I spotted Tori in the crowded bar( His new do sticks out in the casino crowd) We went to talk to him. I was hanging back when I saw Jason shaking someone's hand, but I couldn't see who it was. Turns out it was Morris. We got him to sign both our setlists. Kick Ass. We wandered about and talked to Tori some more. The place was packed so we grabbed a seat as soon as it came available while the fellas were socializing with some of the other folks in the bar. Jason went back over to Tori and got him to sign our setlist as well. We saw Freeze walk by and Jason went and chased after him. He came to our seats and talked to us for a bit. Around 1 a.m. or so we decided to bail. Our hotel was in Slidell, LA which was an hour away and was the closest thing we could get at such short notice on a holiday weekend(plus the casino just reopened as well so all the limited rooms in town were taken) I went looking for Tori to tell him good bye, but couldn't find him. He saw me and shouted so I went back. Some guy he was talking to told me that "yall put on a great show tonight" and Tori told him I was the other guitar player. Too funny. I said my good byes and we headed down the road toward our next destination.

Stay tuned for the Marksville, LA show review in the near future : )
