I am typing with one hand with my three month old daughter on my lap so this will be quick. I was there! I also have a recording. It was great! I'll find more details and post my recollections a bit later.

Sorry to take so long...

I used to hang out at First Ave and the smaller 7th Street Entry (capacity 250 people or so?) all the time (still go but not as often as back in '84) This particular Saturday night there was not too much going on and a friend called me up and asked if I wanted to go hang out and check out some band from Kansas City called the Pedal Jets. I didn't know much about the band but thought it might be fun so I went down and met my friends there and we hung out and watched the bands. This particular evening the mainroom (capacty 1,500 or more?) was pretty crowded with people dancing but the Entry had only about 60 or 70 people who showed up to see the Pedal Jets. Unless there was a big ticket show in one of the rooms you could oftern roam back and forth between them. The Pedal jets played until about midnight (bar closing time then as 1:00 AM) and when they finished one of them said something like "you may want to stick around I think something special is gonna happen." Sure enough a few minute later in stroll Prince and (I think) Brown Mark and Bobby Z. They went up on stage (for those who have been there it was the "old" 7th Street Entry before it was remodled, bar was where the stage is now and stage was against the back wall that borders the mainroom) They used the Pedal Jets gear. In fact the guitar player was helping Prince figure out his guitar. They jammed for maybe a half hour. SOngs were:

Africa talks 2 U
Erotic City
Mutiny
Blues in G / "first Avenue Blues"
Instrumental Jam

It was fantastic to be there! They locked the doors between the rooms so there was not a stampede of people trying to get in so it was just us 60 or 70 folks watching. I remeber that Bob Mould (then in Husker Du) was there. What a surprise! I was alredy a Prince fan and had seen him a few times including surprise shows in the mainroom but this was totally unexpected! Later we went to a party at a local rock and roll party house/hangout and the Pedal Jets guys were hanging out. They were in shock! The guitar player kept saying "I can't believe Prince played my guitar. PRINCE played MY guitar!!!!

One of my very favorite Prince one-off gigs! Absolute killer show. Not from 86 though, but 84.

You are right. It was October 25 1984 I thought BUT, I was sure it was a Saturday night and I just looked at a calendar and see that October 25 was a Thursday. In any case I was there and it was super cool!

Thanks for these fabulous memories, I think that Bob Mould has recorded an album in Paisley Park.
