2nd Longass Hamilton Review For a really great review of this concert, please see http://www.prince.org/msg...&tid=16560 ..he did an awesome job with all the little details.
Never actually reviewed any of the Prince concerts I've seen before, but here goes. Thursday, June 13th Hamilton, Ontario 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm approx. The Soundcheck... As always, members were first let in to the soundcheck at 5:30. I was surprised there were enough members to take up the first three rows in a town like Hamilton, but many people travelled from Toronto and other surrounding cities to witness this concert. As soon as I entered the venue got a glimpse of Prince from the back, I was excited to see that he was wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey; albeit, with those awful white "loop" shoes and the ugly cap... but the jersey was a very cool touch Soundcheck setlist: Sweet Baby Strollin' When The Lights Go Down Days of Wild Long DoW jam When asked how many people were from Toronto, half the crowd threw their hands up. He looked at us with surprise and said, "What, you couldn't wait?!" Then he grinned and said "...this will be a better show anyway." Throughout the soundcheck, Prince kept beginning songs over again because of the mistakes of John Blackwell. When John finally got a drum beat to Sweet Baby correct, Prince asked him "All right, now what did you fix just there so it won't happen again?" John looked like a student being scolded by a teacher... and couldn't answer the question. Prince prompted him with the right answer, and John just nodded in agreement.. I don't think he really knew what he did to fix the problem. Prince realized this too and said "All right, do it again so we're sure that wasn't luck." At one time during the soundcheck his tech was right by a bunch of the amps doing something, and Prince whispered into the microphone that during times like that he likes to scare him by turning his guitar up real loud so you just hear the hum in the amp... and then a few seconds later Prince ripped on the guitar (while his tech stepped away from it for a moment) Then he went in to a story about how his first engineer didn't like Prince very much because "I didn't know what I was doing" and one time that engineer had his ear right up to the amp while fixing something, and Prince just wailed on it. With a grin, he concluded the story... "He was real nice to me after that." Prince pretended to push his tech off the stage at one point too, and then silently imitated him falling off the stage. That got a laugh out of the crowd. Then once Prince was at the edge of the stage, his tech pretended to push him... which somehow didn't get as much of a laugh. I was rollin' *shrug* There wasn't much interaction with the crowd at this soundcheck. At a quiet point somebody asked him, "Are you living in Toronto?" Prince narrowed his eyebrows at the guy and asked, "Where do you live?!" He asked the crowd what colour suit he should wear that night, and most of the crowd agreed he should just continue wearing the Maple Leaf jersey. He said, "Yeah, it's nice, isn't it..." but he ended up changing in to a grey suit with this white shirt that had a really large, pointy collar underneath... as much as I loved the jersey, I was definitely looking forward to watching the man looking fine in that suit all night. As for the music played at the soundcheck, I was completely blown away. I never thought I'd hear Days of Wild again. It was so damned funky! Prince has a new bass guitar, it looks to be dark purple or blue, not sure of the make. But he worked that thing in on DoW. There was a lot of sampling in the background, with Renato going crazy on the keys... almost techno-ish when they got in to the ensuing 10 minute jam. I didn't want it to end. Also great to see was When The Lights Go Down. One of my favorite Prince tunes. He mentioned he was practicing this because there's going to be a slumber party at the Celebration and he's got to keep us up all night. The Concert... I don't have a setlist, apologies! But I'll write about the highlights... I didn't hear "La La La Means I Love You" last night, instead the cover tune that replaced it was "You've Got A Friend". Never seen any mention of this before, but we haven't been getting many setlists from the Canadian leg of the tour. Also very cool was witnessing a brand new Prince song seemingly entitled "Prince and the Band", a mostly vocal tune with sparse piano bits throughout. During a full-out jam after "Sing a Simple Song" where Prince indicated he was going to "sweat my suit out tonight", he stopped the band and started just jamming the guitar... then cued John Blackwell for a kick drum. When I didn't feel that kick drum in my chest I looked over at my friends and we all knew somebody was in trouble. Prince indicated three more times for a kick drum, then stopped the whole song. He walked over to John and pointed to his ear, then tapped the plexiglass around John's kit pretty hard with the top of his guitar. I think he must have busted something on it, because he had to quickly return it to the guitar tech and pick up a different guitar to continue the show. At one point in the show, Prince pointed to the front row and said he was going to have to school them because they were clapping on the one and three. He pointed to one particular man in the front who was dressed in some shorts and a hawaiian shirt, and told him to come up on stage. Prince gave him a once over and said "I got dressed up for you!" Then Prince told him to get ready, he was going to teach him to clap on the two and four... and started playing a groove on the guitar for the guy to clap to. After a bit of hesitation and one and three clapping, the man found the groove and was clapping correctly. Prince later pointed to the man in the audience while singing the line "We don't give a duck what you got on" during 1+1+1=3. During "How Come You Don't Call Me" Prince walked up to John Blackwell, as usual, and cued him for a moan into the mic with "You make a black man want to moan..." Then Prince pointed to a man in the audience to get ready to do the same, and said "You make a white man want to moan..." and the man let out an impressive one! Prince gave the guy a huge smile and then sang "You make a BLACK man want to moan..." and the guy did it again. Prince took off his hat and handed it to the man and said "You need to wear this!" After the song ended, the man put returned Prince's hat to the stage, and Prince shook his head and told him to keep it. Okay, those are all the highlights I recall. Tried to get as much in there as I could because of complaints about lack of details in the Canadian reviews. Howyoulikeusnow! The concert was incredible. That was my 6th One Nite Alone show and it was definitely one of the best if not the best. Renato is getting funkier as the tour goes on, Rhonda seems finer every time I see her, Blackwell was off that night but during those solos you can see why Prince hired him, and Maceo's just a damned legend. I can't wait to see how they do it this Saturday in Toronto!

Thank you Samantha. Your review was great. I am so excited about seeing him Saturday night. I can hardly contain myself. It's been over 8 years since I last saw him, so needless to say I am way overdue and I plan on funking it up all night.

Hey, I live in scarborough. I didn't know there were any Prince fans in Scar. Glad to hear there are a few of us still around. My heart is beating faster by the moment. I was trying not to get too excited about seeing him just incase he cancelled, but seeing as he's here and it's sold out, I guess it's safe to say he will be there and after hearing these great reviews I am never going to sleep tonight knowing I will see him tomorrow.

Oh man, Prince shows some strange humour at times!
I always thought that he can be quite a tough guy when you make mistakes, but I think that Blackwell is amazing. Anyway, thanks for the review!
