Calgary review #3...the personal one...due to popular demand

First of all I'll say that while I am a fan of Prince's, I am certainly not one of his biggest. Average at best. I know all the popular songs, but who doesn't? What has he done lately? I have no idea. However, I do love good music and when I heard Prince was going to be in Calgary I was pretty excited. Then I heard tickets were a minimum of $100. Choke! Needless to say I decided to cough up the cash anticipating a once in a lifetime kind of show. And since I was paying that much I kicked in another $25 for better seats. Row 3. So we had our tickets. Then I see some reviews of previous shows saying that he is no longer doing alot of his previous hits. Disappointment. I've never seen a Prince concert before, so I will probably never get to hear most of his hits live in concert again. $125 for a show where I probably will know a quarter of the songs.

Arrived to the show at about 7:55. Showtime was to be 8:00. Show started at 8:30. No surprise, really. A great thing about this concert...no opening act. Right to the meat of the evening. Show began with Maceo Parker playing as he walked down the centre aisle of the main floor to the stage. He could later be found playing in the first balcony. Curtain was raised and the crowd went nuts. My uneasy feeling of a wasted $125 went out the window. What can you say...the guy knows how to entertain, no matter what he's playing. He was surprisingly (to me) open to the crowd and very talkative. An interesting aspect of the Calgary venue was that just in front of the stage is an orchestra pit where the fan club members were seated. Its surrounded by a wall about 4 feet high and two feet thick. Prince made use of this on a couple of occasions by walking all the way around it during solos and to thank the crowd near the end of the evening. Very cool.

The music itself was fantastic and I will now be picking up his latest album. I believe he played for about an hour and a half before leaving for a bit. Returned for a lengthy encore, left again, and returned one more time for a couple of songs. Overall, about a 2 - 2 1/2 hour show.

As for the song selection, I recognized 3 in the first set, but many, many more in the encores. Not disappointed in the least. The new music (to me) was awesome and the old finished it off nicely. Although, I did expect a bigger close to the show. Final song was "Anna Stesia". Just thought he'd do something with a little more pop.

There you have it,

He's been playing the "hits" for YEARS!!! I am so glad that Prince is finally comfortable playing whatever he feels and is performing his new songs! If u want to see Prince perform his hits, buy the "Rave Un2 The Year 2000" dvd. Cool that u are going to buy The Rainbow Children.

p.s. I hope your name isn't of that stupid mohawk sporting biker wrestler who was in the WWF in the 80's.
