Prince outdoors

Prince doesnt play many outdoor concerts, maybe because he has had bad luck with them, the Stones tour, I read something about a Rio concert in 90 with Guns n Roses fans on MTV, maybe this is why he didnt play the recent Live 8, any thoughts on why P doesnt like outdoor concerts?

I don't think he has a problem playing outdoor shows, I think he did a couple last year, and I seen him in '97 at the Shoreline in Mountain View and it had even rained earlier in the day and was a cold night.

Maybe he doesn't like the idea of fans standing outside the venue so that they can hear without paying. shrug Prince can be stingy.

i have always pondered that myself. i would love 2 see a show while the sun is setting, and blah, but maybe he doesn't do the outdoor shows because the humidity would eff up his hair lol but it seems like i have seen a couple pics of him performing outside

He played an outdoor show in WA state in 97. It was at an outdoor amphitheater that overlooks the columbia river. Beautiful weather but chilly. "Colder than a witches tit" I believe P said.

i've seen him play outdoors twice - once at the today show concert with larry and chaka (okay, maybe that doesn't count) and once at jones beach, on the JOTY tour (he made his entrance by playing guitar on the back of a motorboat that brought him to the edge of the stage, VERY cool).

I think it is because most outdoor venues have horrible sound. Red Rocks is awesome, but other than that, outdoor concerts leave a lot to be desired, especially when the wind is blowing, etc. He is such a perfectionist when it comes to a perfect sound mix. Why would he want to expose himself to poor external conditions? Of course, most arenas have bad sound also. So, maybe my logic is flawed. I guess the man's gotta play somewhere, eh?

Speaking of which, I remember a story about him playing outdoors in London (maybe?) and it rained cats and dogs. Anyway, a puddle of water had collected on the awning that was covering him and it eventually fell through and splashed on P's head while he was playing. evillol Whoever the fan was that relayed that story said P kept right on playing. What a trooper if that's true. lol

wow, i wish i could have been at that show. i've seen a few shows at deer creek (which i hear is named after some hideous corporate entity now) and i had a hoot every time. i've seen sade, sting and lollapalooza '94 there - i don't think there's a bad seat in the place. even the lawn seats aren't bad.

Sadly...Deer Creek is now owned by Verizon Wireless, but it's still a GREAT place to see a show. Along with following Prince around the world, I spent my 20s touring the country and seeing the Grateful Dead, and Deer Creek shows were ALWAYS an AMAZING experience.

well, i hope at least that they didn't screw up the venue. by the way, i hate that corporate renaming crap. i'd respect one of those huge companies so much if they bought an arena and let it keep its name.

They aren't buying the arena they are basically buying advertising space through naming rights. If a corporation did that they would be paying 150 million dollars and getting nothing in return which doesn't seem that good of an idea for the shareholders.

the lighting, if youve ever been to a Prince show you know how the lighting is different for each song, some songs he likes to turn up the lights, thats hard to do outdoors

I agree. He is into everything sounding just right; I can't see him allowing a performance, that he spends SO MUCH time perfecting in terms of sound/look/choreography, to be f***ed up because the weather was bad.

He played outdoors once in Belgium with the Batman tour ... the sound was terrible indeed. From the 11 concerts I've seen this was definitely not a good one (in terms of sound).

Waiting for Him to come to Belgium again .....

Out of the 50 Prince concerts I have seen in my life probably 10 were open-air shows. As this number includes aftershows as well (which are not open-air) that's not such a low percentage pout
With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

Jones Beach, Long Island NY. Outdoor stadium on the water at night. The lights go down and the music starts, you hear prince pumping up the audience, but is no where to be found. Suddenly out on the water you see a boat with him on it with a wireless mic. The boat pulls up to the stage and he walks off and right up to the stage. The air was thick that night so the sound was a little off.
