Maceo at the Jazz Cafe, London 24th May 2002 After 5 years I finally caught up with Maceo at the Jazz Cafe last night. Although the band had changed line ups (no more Fred Wesley or Alfred "Pee Wee" Ellis) there were still some fine musicians to make the night. "New" additions to the line up included Greg Boyer on Trombone and Rodney "Skeet" Curtis on Bass; both from the 70's P-Funk camp.
The set started with the classic Rufus & Chaka Khan track "Once We Get Started" and continued to jam over the next hour or so. The set even took in a cover of "Baby Knows" by some guy named Prince. If you have heard of this person please let me know! Well, after 90 mins I was totally funked up! Maceo left us alone for a good 15 mins while the band had a rest and then returned for the encore. This is when things went seriously wrong! He opened up the 2nd half by playing some fantastic flute and jamming on a Gil Scott Heron groove when his son, Corey Parker, who had been singing back-ups all night decided that he could rap..... well, he can't! This really spoiled the 30 minute encore which only salvaged itself once "Pass The Peas" first refrain was called. Still, it was still a pretty damn good show and I look forward to seeing Maceo again soon. Just leave your son at home please, Maceo! -----------------------------------------------
