Rock royalty tipped to play capital gig

American rock star Prince will play in Wellington this year, the Sunday Star-Times has been told.


Prince, who changed his name to an unpronounceable androgynous symbol for most of the 1990s after a disagreement with his record company, dominated the charts in the 1980s, thrilling audiences with risque lyrics and sex-charged performances.

Phil Sprey, the events manager who bought the Moody Blues to New Zealand last month, is said to have signed a deal with the snake-hipped star.

Sprey's website www.capitalc.co.nz says: "Coming to Wellington! ROYALTY!? Watch this Space."

But Sprey would not confirm the rumours, claiming "royalty" could mean anyone.

He said he was in discussions with several international acts.

Id love to even believe this, but I seriously think its bollox, whey would he come here when he has never been before and Just do Wellington. He could have included us when he palyed in Aussie in 2003 but he didnt.

eff it...can this please be real? I mean, if the promoter was willing to put up the cash to bring him over here, its possible he'd go for it - maybe testdrive his next tour here like he did in aussie.

I just dont think he has the fan base here to make hauling all that gear out worthwile unless it was part of an aussie tour, which seems unlikely since he was there recently for the first time since the Daimonds and Pearls tour.

In fact a similar rumor arose regarding a visit last year and in 95 I think.

Although I reckon heaps of Aussies would come over, you can get flights real cheap these days.

While he may not have people running to the stores for each new album, he DOES still have a rep as an incredible live act - if he did tour here, I'm fairly certain you'd see a lot of people who haven't bought a Prince album since 1988 still queing for tickets.

Basically, I just really really hope this turns out to be true.
