Lots of theories on this one. Nobody really knows, (except for Prince and Susannah Melvoin, who supposedly wrote it with him. Did she, I can't remember?) but I think that it is about a care-free, liberated little girl that shows the rest of the children in her class how 2 be happy and liberate their minds. Maybe I'm just seeing it through rose-colored glasses, but that's my take on it. The mentally disabled theory is a popular one, though. The Mothership Connection... It has been suggested that the character Cynthia Rose is based on someone in Susannah's school class. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

Prince did say once (on the old NPG Online Ltd. website) that it was about a girl who was "challenged", so it was taken to mean mentally challenged. An inspiring song when looked at that way, eh?

To me it is just about a girl who is happy being herself and doesn't care what or how other people think. This song became a type of anthem for me in my life because I'm one of those who doesn't care about outward apperiences. I would rather concentrate on love and happiness. To me Cynthia Roses just was supposed to represent how ideally people should look on life and it's everyday challenges.
But of coarse it is my fav. Prince song so I'm biassed. Love to you all.

If you set your mind free baby, maybe you'll understand.. "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

I think this is exactly what Starfish & Coffe is about. "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

I'm with all you guys on this one, when Prince said "the meats ain't in her lunchbox" I took it to mean that this girl was challenged also. But I guess another question arises as to what "challenged" means. To Cynthia Rose, we're probably the challenged ones because we didn't/couldn't see into her world. Whatever the answer, if there is one, it is a GREAT song. This is a great question also. Brass Monkey Inc.
