Well, I guess other long-time recording artists making money with online clubs must be in the same boat. To be more specific, it looks like the Internet is essentially Prince's ONLY source of income these days, as he has to hawk cheesy jewelry and the like to pay his bills. Sure, plenty of other bands market on the Internet, but Prince has been reduced to peddling third-rate outtakes and other tripe as his sole source of income other than live performances (which apparently are hugely disappointing these days). Not quite. He still receives airplay royalties, royalties from cover versions of his songs (of which there are many), sheet music royalties, record sales overseas, etc. Just because he doesn't get airplay with new music doesn't mean it has stopped with his old songs. You mean like "Housequake" wasn't something new or original? I also thought that Blackwell overplays. Prince even told him to keep the beat straight a couple of times at soundcheck. He was doing crazy shit and Prince said straight and then said "back to the rim" during "Joy" and John stopped laying on the snare and I thought finally slow down and stop pounding! He was all over the place on every song with triplets galore and it was just too much. The best drummers know when to get in the pocket "a little bit behind the beat" and when to pound and fill. Blackwell never let up. Pound pound and the heavy metal overdone twirls. He'll be gone next tour.
LOL! This gets funnier and funnier. You do realize that every band leader gives instructions to each band member, do you not? Especially when it's the band leader who is the composer of the music. Do you think he didn't have to instruct Blackwell about how to play ANYTHING on TRC in the studio? LOLOLOLOL This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Just to let you know...
(from the NY Times) "Prince remains one of the greatest pop performers alive, sexy and menacing without any of the awkward self-regard that often afflicts so-called legends. His three-piece band ably joined him on the funk grooves (when he murmured, "On the one," it would come to a dead stop), but the members couldn't quite match his versatility. They turned his anxious new-wave hit "When You Were Mine" into a bland rock 'n' roll singalong." (DMSR) "The best songs of the set were from the 80's and early 90's. Think about what the crowd went nuts for- When U Were Mine..." (Phunk) "Yeah Brotha, I hate to say it, but the Phunk is on your side. I checked out the show in ATL and while there were glimpses of his greatness (can you say When You Were Mine!), the pace of the show, well, sucked." (me): personally, I think it could be that as fans our love of the song blinds us to how it's performed...and it also blinds us to how well lesser-known songs are performed... (NY Times) "As the concert was ending, he invited the audience to join his kingdom: for $100 a year, members of his fan club are promised exclusive CD's, exclusive concert tickets and — if they're lucky — exclusive online chats with His Majesty. In essence, he's privatizing his audience, creating his own hermetic world, a radio-free paradise where nothing happens without his approval. And as the 32nd song of the night faded out, it didn't sound like a bad idea." (DMSR) "It took me $300 for tickets and $100 for membership and a full 12 hours of hanging with Prince to finally realize that Prince's glory days are over, he's ripping his true fans off and he just ain't that great anymore." (me): now, does this mean the NY Times is right and DMSR is wrong??...Yes, it does...lol...just kidding...no, it doesn't...but what it DOES do, is show that maybe...juuuuust maybe...as fans we're not always the best ones to see things realistically...try and keep that in mind the next time Prince either seems like a perfect saint OR a lying, selfish bastard in your eyes...

Personally, I'm glad Prince has matured. No matter how tiny he is, he'd look pretty pathetic doing the same things he was doing in Purple Rain.
As for lack of dancing, that gets old real quick. I'm glad this tour is focusing on the music. And D'angelo, as much as I love his music, will never equal Prince. Not in musicianship or showmanship. Sorry you didn't enjoy the show, but you're definitely in the minority on this one. BTW, it's tourette, not turet, syndrome. And Prince wasn't making fun of people with tourette syndrome, he said he has it and that's one of the reasons he used to cuss so much.

His songs, or his performance of them??...From all indications, his performance skill and ability hasn't dropped one bit...whether or not you like the songs he performs is another matter, and one that is actually irrelevant to the argument... And sure the club "doesn't sound like a bad idea." But the reality isn't as good as it sounds. "NPG Raise your hand and open it up!" First, do you normally complain about things that havent' happened yet??...("Don't forget, you'll be seeing those cd's someday" indicates a complaint about what you fear will happen, not about what has happened...) Second, not sure what the point of those quotes you wrote are supposed to be making... Third, the point of the article was to say that Prince's music and his performace of it at the concert was so good, that it's well worth the money if you get both CDs and an up-close view at concerts like these...which of course also renders your "quotes" a bit irrelevant...lol

Thanks for your honesty. It's good to see someone else can report the good as well as the bad.
Whoever mentioned that this band has no personality & that they'll be gone in a year or so is on to something. The current band lacks a mainstay - one anchor that we can look to besides Prince. Who is the elder statesman here? Rhonda? One Night Alone would have been a good description for Ani DiFranco's recent stop at Carnegie Hall - just her and her guitar. Prince can learn more from her than just how to run a record company. [This message was edited Thu Apr 11 2:03:39 PDT 2002 by IrishEcho]

It's still amazing to me that the overwhelming majority of fans are being blown away by this show. His past few tours had much more grumblings from the fans.
Sounds like the few who haven't enjoyed it might have preferred the likes of N'sync, et. al, where the music takes a back seat to explosions and things. And to say Prince has lost it just totally ruins any credibility you claim to have. His musicianship is stronger than ever. Michael Jackson, now that's someone who's lost it. Recreating his videos right down to the exact same outfits. Well, he didn't have much of a wardrobe to begin with. And all the lip-synching he did during his anniversary concerts was just pathetic. He looked plan ridiculous dancing. Michael has lost it and then some. Prince shows again and again who the REAL king is.

The preaching is a bit much, especialy when he's also making some pretty negative comments about people ! And the ads for NPGMC ! He should leave that to ads on the big screens, before and after the shows. He makes himself sound desperate talking about it during the show !

I hate to agree, but I can see where you're coming from...I think that it's disgusting to charge $100 bucks for a premium membership all under the guise of giving your "fans" something "special", yet, in addition to the $100 bucks, they also have to pay for the seats, and worse still, they have to fight for the seats like a bunch of animals? One thing I hate about celeberties is that they seem to forget that if WE, THE FANS, weren't taking our hard earned money that would have been better spent on something else instead putting it into their pockets, they wouldn't be where they are...what good is good music if there's no one buying it? If that's the only reason most people have for getting in the industry nowadays, why would anyone not want to be paid?
To the extent that Prince has made himself some type of self-appointed Moral Majority/Morality Policeman, I find that to be very hypocritical...how can he talk about the way people in the world treat each other when he spent the majority of his life stabbing the people he supposedly cared about in the back? And who can blame poor Mayte? She had enough of his shit...they lose our child, yet he can't be bothered to let her grieve before he plastered her all over Oprah and let her ask questions about Prince and Mayte's business that have nothing to do with her? I feel that if he had allowed Mayte a chance to mourn over the loss of their son instead of trying to sweep it under the rug because HE didn't want to deal with it things would be different between them today...and as for Larry, the man is poison, but since Prince is too much of an egotistical dumbass to realize where he's traveling wrong, Larry will be sucking his dick until there's nothing left in Prince's balls but air...or is it the other way around?... I think it's really tacky to treat your fans like they're SUPPOSED TO WANT TO SPEND HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS ON YOUR SHOWS EVERYTIME YOU DECIDE TO STEP OUT OF THE HOUSE...what's wrong with having an appreciation for what your fans still bring to you? At least he does still have die-hard fans, and it's not like he's getting any new ones...most of the P fans I know had been listening to his shit since before Purple Rain, and any new fans he may have received occurred between the PR era and maybe Diamonds and Pearls...anything after that, wasn't happenin'... I suppose I'm upset because this is STILL, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, the same man who taught me that being different and not being like the others was okay, and that liking sex, and having a foul mouth had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH A PERSON'S SPIRITUALITY...I still don't see how one has anything to do with the other myself, so this whole "holier than thou" tangent is a bit much to swallow...Not to say that people can't change, but why does he expect everyone around him to change, too? So he can feel better about being a born-again virgin? If you TRULY, and I say truly because honesty is such a HUGE ISSUE with Geminis, truly care about the people you consider to be your "friends", then you will accept them as they are, and not as you'd like for them to be...so, instead of trying to condemn people to a life of vegetarian-non-profanity-ism, he should just shut the fuck up...he keeps dispensing information like we asked him what he thought about the way we live our lives and conduct our business...who gave him the right to judge? Who does he think he is? Not the man I've loved for so long...this is an impostor...will the REAL PRINCE please stand up?

Well, what bothered me about the show was Prince's attitude. Three specific moments come to mind. Forgive me if they've been mentioned in another thread.
First, towards the end of the soundcheck, he compares people who to cuss to those with tourette's syndrome because they "can't stop". After asking how many people cuss, he randomly points to those with their hand raised and says, "Tourette's ... tourette's ... tourette's..." Uncool. Next, in the middle of Purple Rain, he says before 9/11 people weren't into the Bible didn't want to know about the future. Now, they do and the "smart ones turn to their Bibles". Finally, during the "Love is God" part of AnnaStesia Prince essentially mocks those who aren't club members. He did this at the DC show as well. It usually goes along the lines of asking NPGMC members how they like their seats and then asking nonmembers the same question. He then tells them if they want they good seats they have to join the club. At the NYC show he stressed that division by asking members to wave their hands as he closed the song. There are ways of advocating an idea without *needlessly* offending people. People didn't pay $70+ to be compared with those who have a disease OR ridiculed for dealing with 9/11 a different way OR mocked for not being NPGMC member. If he wants to encourage people not to cuss, read the New World Translation of the Bible, and join the NPGMC, cool. Just don't belittle people in the process. THIS is why I may not be going to anymore Prince concerts. [This message was edited Thu Apr 11 4:45:41 PDT 2002 by Tran]
