Comparing Prince's post-80s output to his core catalog is like comparing Sophia Loren to some gutter-slug street-walking whore. I mean, there is no comparison--every Prince release for the past 10 years has heaped disgrace on his earlier work.

Just because you can't see the amazing beauty in an album like The Truth, and can't see it as true growth as both a songwriter and a singer, doesn't mean it doesn't exist...and sorry, but you can't name a single album from the 80's which matches the musicianship found on TRC...you can't...there isn't a single album from the 80's which has better drumming or guitar on it...not one.

The man can't even get a record contract now--sheesh!

Um, he's not TRYING to get a record contract now...sheesh...lol

And before you call me out for being negative, my strong feelings about his current work only spring from the fact that my love of his earlier work is so strong. The man is the most freakishly talented pop music artist ever, no doubt.

Exactly my point...you're love of his earlier work is so strong--maybe TOO strong--that you're unable to see the beauty that is contained in some of his more recent work...as well as you see Prince as a talented pop music artist, as where I see him as a talented songwriter/musician....I couldn't care less if it was pop or r&b or funk...that's why I loved The Truth CD, which was close to folk...but it still showcased Prince's amazing ability at songwriting and finding a melody that sticks in your head....

Not all his recent work, obviously, but then again, not all of his earlier work was great, either...to me, ATWIAD was average at best...TRC blows that shit straight out of the water, not EVEN a contest...the guitar work on much of The Truth is better than all the stereotypical guitarist acrobatics that Prince employed on way too much of his 80's output...we could go back and forth giving reasons why one song/album is better than another, but that would miss the point I'm getting at, which is--in my opinion anyway--some people just won't grow or change with the artists they're fans of...I think that's happening with Prince now...Believe it or not, there are actually some people who didn't think Prince should have been seen as a "musical genius" until they heard TRC...lol...they didn't think 1999 or Parade showcased a genius...they just didn't see it...but now they do...so it goes both ways...

Many cudos to Prince for focusing on the power of music, instead of the power of the pop song..

Wellbeyond, what I am saying is that even an artist as talented as Prince--and there are precious few who are--should know their limitations. Case in point is U2: after realizing that their decade-long flirtation with electronica had alienated their fans, they returned to form on their last album. There were well-placed elements of dance and electronica on U2's latest, but it was basically a return to their strengths: uplifting spiritual rock anthems that can be played on the radio. You see, I don't equate radio play with lack of artistry--the real excitement comes when an artist like Prince who is so different brings true pop art to the radio waves. It seems that these days, even if he tried, Prince couldn't write a power-pop song like Peach or Let's Go Crazy to save his life. Man, I watched Purple Rain today and wanted to cry afterwards seeing how fall Prince has fallen.

are you all kidding? Prince is aging so smoothly and gracefully This new style is fantastic. How can u criticize someone who has given you so much over the years? Man, do u realise if P did another hit n run style show, u all would be dissin' so bad.

wake up people. The man has still got it. He's doing what we've been asking for sooo long. He's focusing on the music.

So what should Prince do??? Should he peronally send out a demo of the current stuff he's working on to the "dissapointed fans" to see if they approve before he decides to release anything new?

I knew one thing about this tour, and that is that it would put some seperation between his "purple rain" fans and the fans that are diggin' where he's at, not where he's been.

TRC will never be heard from again a few years from now just like Rave and most of his 90's releases. The songs that hold up with him live over time are all very much 80's releases. I say release whatver you want but I won't be a $400 sucker no more.

I can certainly understand your feelings. I think I would have been annoyed too.

I also agree that Prince hasn't been his strongest in the 90s and the 00s.

I know what I have to say probably would be like water falling on concrete, but I think the man, and have thought for a while, he needs a serious hiatus. Take a 5-year break or something. Lead another life and go away from the music for a while and let it build up to the point where it explodes. Get away from the business, the fans, the media, the recording studio, let someone else run the Park, everything and just do something else - like when John Lennon became a father and stayed at home with his son - when he came back into the Limelight, his Imagine album was truly a prize. Let the tension get so bad that he'll one day, as silently as he walked away from us, walk back into the studio and record a kick-ass album of 5 years worth of frustration. Prince frustration. Now, you know what Prince can sound like when he's frustrated "The Black Album." He may have been angry, but heck, that album sure made me feel good.

I've read where some people mentioned that people want the old Prince, the bad boy Prince. Maybe for some. For me, what I enjoyed most about Prince was his walking the line between dark and light. He was that balance. He wasn't too much or the other. He would talk about God one minute and fucking you the next. That's what I loved. I identified with him because I like walking that line, having that balance. I started out with Prince before the public knew who he was. When I saw his promo album, I knew he was going places. This Religious/Black Reparation kick he's on only leads me to think that a) this is a game and any minute he's going to raise his head and with a mischievous grin go "psyche, I was just kidding." b) somebody scared the crap out of him with some God psychobabble - there's a point where your faith gets tested and you stand at the crossroads and you have to make a choice between the head and the heart or c) he has a messiah complex and that little control freak that lives inside of him is having a field day right now.

I can understand him wanting a change of style of music. It's happened to many musicians. It's happened to me. However, for someone as well known as Prince, it isn't easy. He can't just go and gig with a jazz lounge band. All he can do is release it and hope his fans trail along. That's the price you pay. As far as Larry, Maceo, George - one album would have been sufficient and send them on their way. Too much old school winds up just to be that.

I also agree that his website is his way of keeping the funds coming in. But he has to make a living some way and a fan has to ask themselves if it's worth it to them to go through all that. I think it's a lot. I don't really have to know him personally, just come sit down and enjoy the show with little hassle.

I still think he needs a hiatus. If he would back off a bit with the control and put a bit more faith in God, he could think up a more win/win situation for his fans to be with him and he to make a living as well.

These are just my thoughts.

You mean to see how much Prince has changed....I already know you don't like what he's doing now, but that alone doesn't make it unworthy of praise...and so far, that's all you've offered up is your individual personal opinion...Prince could write a song like "Peach" without problem...that is, if he were inspired to....Have you heard "Vavoom"??...In my eyes, "Vavoom" is Prince trying to write another "Peach"...only thing is, it sounds like an uninspired Prince trying to write another "Peach"...writing power pop songs no longer interests him...and trust me, when you're an artist and creating a certain type of art no longer inspires you or holds your interest, it shows in the output...it's not Prince's songwriting abilities which have diminished...it's his desire to write those types of songs....I think you mistakenly believe that Prince really wants to create Purple Rain, pt.2, but just can't...but I think Prince(now anyway) wants to push himself in a slightly different direction...he's no longer the same guy who WANTED to write "Peach"...

All the other preachy shit has been discussed. I'm not an idiot and I don't need Prince to tell me how to live or what to believe in. I paid for fun and entertainment, not to join his cult.

Ah, so now Prince speaking his mind about his views on life and society and religion is the equivalent of starting a cult...Hmmmm...I wonder how many people come away from a U2 concert where Bono goes on about how we need to care about this cause or that cause, how this government is wrong or that official is evil, and think U2 is starting a cult??...probably zero...[/quote]

Shit thanks for reminding me something I wanted to mention. U2 is a great example. They say get involved, help others, give to Amnesty, and many many causes over the years. All Prince has said was "Sign up for NPGMC and give ME money! I need more!! I thought it would have been nice if Prince mentioned 9/11 and maybe donated a portion or a signed guitar to the fund. Or even let some firemen get in free or something. He did nothing!! All he said was "Should have read the Scripture, told ya so and Sign up for NPGMC!! Give NPG money!! Selfish man.

Let me add that U2 let the firefighters basically take over the end of their last show at MSG and Bono auctioned off his jacket for charity recently. All Prince does is Love4oneanother which we don't really know where that money went.

Selfish, that's debatable...plus we have NO idea what Prince the individual has done to help out those in need after 9/11...we expect everything he does to be out in the open...But beyond all that, the only thing you've said above is that you "agree" with what U2 espouses, and dont' "agree" with what Prince does...but your disagreement with Prince's "causes" doesn't automatically mean he wants you to join a "cult"...

Very well put. Man, isn't it sad that Prince has to rely on the NPG website to make a living now. For chrissake, I heard that the Rainbow Children has sold less than 130,000 copies. Man, music lovers are voting with their feet.

Don't take this personally, but that is just PREPOSTEROUS! LOL! Jeezus, do you realize the politics involved in the mainstream radio industry today? It costs $$$$$ to get consistent airplay. Do you think that the reason dj's don't play Prince music, new Prince music, is because they simply don't like it and/or may not get requests for it? It's not so. Major labels pay for radio airplay. DJ's don't have nearly the power or influence they once did - no matter how great or mediocre the music being paid for is.

If you're going to judge Prince's music on its exposure, this era is the wrong era to do it in.

Meshell gets little to no airplay.

Ani DiFranco gets little to no airplay.

Keneally gets little to no airplay.

These are quality artists making quality music, and are every bit as good as the best REAL artists on the radio and better than most.

There has never been a worse time in the history of the music industry (in my lifetime at least) for REAL music and the exposure tied to it.

My suggestion??...Hop off the train at the next stop, and get back on once that amazing album is released...you want to get to the final destination now, and because of that you aren't able to see the great scenery that the train is traveling thru...Me??...I'll just sit back, and marvel at the beauty of the mountains and the ocean and the fields of wildflowers outside my window on the way there...you can keep saying "are we there yet??" if you want...

Since we're talking about radio, I thought it was funny when Prince said "If I had my own radio station it would sound like this." Then he goes into "Strange Relationship"!! If Prince wrote a song even close to as good as that one today, it just might get on the radio!! Sorry but "She Loves Me" "Mellow" and "1+1" aren't ever going to be played even if the stations weren't owned by big coporations. They would never make it on the air in the 80's 90's or even now, so don't bitch about it! Put out a strong record or even a single like Madonna just did and I really think the fans will come back. He wants it both ways. He claims not to care about radio, but then scrolls all the coporations on the screen and blames them that he's not on the radio. If you don't care, then why act like you do!

To be more specific, it looks like the Internet is essentially Prince's ONLY source of income these days, as he has to hawk cheesy jewelry and the like to pay his bills. Sure, plenty of other bands market on the Internet, but Prince has been reduced to peddling third-rate outtakes and other tripe as his sole source of income other than live performances (which apparently are hugely disappointing these days). I was not surprised when I bought the new No Doubt album that the only song that sucked was the one produced by Prince. Hey, maybe that is what Prince needs, to finally bring in a producer. But his megalomania will never let that happen, and we'll be forced to continue to listen to moronic self-indulgent crap like the foolish distorted voice on TRC. I wonder if Prince can even still get women these days, certainly not hot ones like Appolonia.

First of all "Xenophobia" is a total lame rip off of a Miles Davis song or someone similar. (I've got my jazzhead mom researching it) It's nothing new, original or even that good. I found it very simple and unfulfilling. Maybe you should buy more "real" jazz albums. I also thought that Blackwell overplays. Prince even told him to keep the beat straight a couple of times at soundcheck. He was doing crazy shit and Prince said straight and then said "back to the rim" during "Joy" and John stopped laying on the snare and I thought finally slow down and stop pounding! He was all over the place on every song with triplets galore and it was just too much. The best drummers know when to get in the pocket "a little bit behind the beat" and when to pound and fill. Blackwell never let up. Pound pound and the heavy metal overdone twirls. He'll be gone next tour.

Actually, no...it's been going on for about 1 1/2 to 2 years, in my eyes...and it started when Prince decided to forego the "High" album, and found a muse and inspiration in creating TRC...up until then, the train had been afraid to move too far forward, didn't want to get too far from the last big city...so to me, it just stayed in the same station, that last city still in it's sights back there...easy enough to return to it if enough passengers wanted to...

Once again, you've hit the nail right on the head my friend. Did you see Prince's interview on Larry King Live a few years ago? Man, he showed what an idiot he can be on that show when he moaned and groaned about big record companies, blaming them for all his problems. He even made the idiotic comment, "I don't believe in contracts." Well what the hell is an NPG subscription? Prince should remember that it was a big mean corporation, Warner Bros., that took a huge risk on him early in his career, backing lyrics that were scandalous for the time, allowing him to put out a risky double album like 1999 and funding the Purple Rain project that made him a megastar (and a mult-millionaire, although Prince seems to have squandered his forture, which I bet he blames on others, too). If he put out a strong tune, it would get play, period. Garbage like "The Work Pt. 1" doesn't deserve airplay.

First of all "Xenophobia" is a total lame rip off of a Miles Davis song or someone similar. (I've got my jazzhead mom researching it) It's nothing new, original or even that good. I found it very simple and unfulfilling. Maybe you should buy more "real" jazz albums.

Oh, here we go...lol...the ol' "It's been done by Miles before, so it's not worthy of praise"...funny, but we weren't saying that back in the 80's, that what Prince was doing had been "done before" by George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic...and Stevie Wonder....and Marvin Gaye...then add on the "Maybe you should listen to REAL jazz"...as if "Xenophobia" is jazz...lol...it's funk, pure and simply, with some touches of jazz improvisational instumentation...saying "You should listen to real jazz" would be like saying "All The Critics Love U In New York" sucks and you should "listen to real rap"...lol...

Every band member working for Prince is "gone" by the next tour...lol...and I thought that was what sound checks were for(among other things), to practice and iron out any wrinkles before the show...what, you think Blackwell is the only drummer Prince has corrected during a sound check??..lol...If not, then why bring it up??..What's it proving??...I bet your ass that Bobby Z got his ass corrected like a mf back in the 80's...

As for Blackwell "overplayig" and pounding all the time, have you listened to his work on "Everywhere" and "Mellow" and "She Loves Me 4 Me", and "The Rainbow Children"??...There's fucking amazing subtly in his performance on all those songs, especially how he attacks the cymbals on "Everywhere" towards the end...this is a guy who can switch up his drumming style with the best of them...you are the ONLY person I've heard so far who has found negativity in Blackwell's performances with Prince, and that includes drummers themselves...

I am going to hold up a sign at the LA show that says "LITTLE RED CORVETTE." The other side of the sign will say, "WHAT IS THIS CRAP U R PLAYING?" Do you think that will get a reaction?

I love you wellbeyond. wink ....[in a manly way of course]

You are like a more articulate version of me. My brain seems to work the same way as yours (only slower).

I guess I'm just trying to say that I agree with everything you say in this thread (again).

LOL...it's all the beer, man...it slows your typing skills.... wink

Yea I'm a drummer too and maybe it was the mix but his kick drum overpowered the band and I prefer Prince's drummers to complement him more not go overboard and drown him out. As Herbie Hancock said when I saw him. There's plenty of drummers who can bang the drums but very few who can play the drums. Prince was criticizing Blackwell's "Style" not his parts. They were jamming and both times Blackwell didn't have the sense to let the groove go and lay off, so Prince said "straight" or "Rim" That's very insulting to a drummer. It's not oh this is how it goes, it's more like, you're not feelin it. I'm sure in the studio Prince corrected him many many times. As far as the song, I'll try to find it. I don't think Prince copied Stevie or Clinton or anyone directly, he was influenced, but some of his new jazz stuff just seems like blatant ripoffs, and boring! Been there done that.

Sure, plenty of other bands market on the Internet, but Prince has been reduced to peddling third-rate outtakes and other tripe as his sole source of income other than live performances (which apparently are hugely disappointing these days).

WHAT the FUCK??...lol..."Apparently are hugely disappointing" according to WHOM??..What the HELL are you basing THAT conclusion on, besides your own warped negativity towards Prince??...The press reviews??...Can't be, because they're HUGELY and overwhelmingly positive...Fan reactions??...Please, for every disappointed fan thread like DMSR's(which I'm not faulting him one iota for posting), there are around 50 which praise Prince to the high heavens, even by those who didn't like TRC the album...so what the fuck is that based on??...I mean, I know the answer, that it's based on nothing..lol...I just want to see if you can pull a logical answer out of your ass to answer it... wink

A lot of you won't agree with this report, but it's the way I feel. I've been a Prince fan for along time, spending loads of money for flashes of brilliance. I've finally kicked the habit after seeing the NYC soundcheck,

Don't let the door hit you where the good lord spit U I guess

I'm not happy with his new found preaching and Prince can be an ass sometimes, but his shows always rock IMHO. And as far as I'm concerned I wish he'd play les of the old stuff and more of the new stuff. More of the stuff he never does.

HE has to many GREAT songs from so many albums it's a shame he feels he has to play the old stuff to please a segment of his fan base.
