In my opinion, ?uestlove pays much respect to Prince and all the other musicians on stage that night. I mean who else would go home and write a report at 5:00 a.m besides a true fan?
So he was a little disappointed that he didn't get to play 7779311... SO WHAT??? He just wanted to play on one of his favorite jams! Is that such a big deal? Furthermore, he gave props to Blackwell for nailing it. I guess I just don't understand why some people are getting bent out of shape over what is obviously such a glowing review of ?uestlove's experience with Prince. I can answer that....its because some of these people dont listen to anything BUT Prince and for some reason they feel "threatened" by anyone that's not him....or in other words, they're asskissers.... Wow. You seem to talk a lot without knowing anything. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

SoulSeven said noone said it was the be and end all man. quest only drummed on a few tracks really on the nikka album and as for voodoo i think its an acquired taste. they were trying to do something different and not everyone was going to like it. its not for pop-tuned ears. in my mind though it was a modern masterpiece. I was responding to your comment about his playing on a few recordings. I named two that I had personally heard and was not impressed. I wasn't impressed with the Voodoo album not because I have "pop-trained ears" but becasue the album could have just as well been one long song. All of the songs basically sound the same. i think if you know hip hop and soul music traditions then you can appreciate what quest does a little more.
Oh stop. Now you are starting to sound like one of those snooty Wynton Marsalis jazz fans that think that just because someone likes Bitches Brew or On the Corner that they can't appreciate Round About Midnight or Bopping the Blues. and live hes fantastic. he could change his style/sound up a little more but thats his prerogative. he was more free as a drummer on the first two roots albums. hes been perfecting a more breakbeat-rooted style since then.
he can come off as self indulgent every now and then but its obvious that he respects john blackwell. and he is one of the best drummers in black music right now, and also one of the most in demand. As I stated before as soon as I hear him do somethng other than what I have heard so far I will give him credit. Until then he comes off as an ass for no reason. For the record I am a female and I prefer the drumming style of John Bonham, Buddy Miles, Mitch Mitchell, Jerome "Bigfoot" Brailey, etc. [This message was edited Wed Apr 10 18:40:50 PDT 2002 by Ifsixwuz9] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I beg ?uest's pardon, I've seen Jellybean play "777-9311", and he does play it right. However, John Blackwell is so daggum good, he makes playin' it right sound even more right.

?uest has produced Common, Erykah Badu, Bilal, Nikka Costa and D'angelo, so he's already silenced all of you hater's
on this board. If he was'nt tight, Prince wouldn't have jammed with him on a more than one occasion, including @ PP. Release Yourself

Quest is full of shit, everybody knows that and even okayplayers know that.
just read his posts over there. one minute he is jockin' a artist the next he is not cause he could not be the drummer besides his chops are tired and the same old shit every album damn he even is replaced on the new roots album by a drum machine on some of the songs there is a reason why Blackwell is Prince's drummer, not Questlove.

Put it this way, the beats used in the majority of the songs sound similar. Like they took the same drum track and dropped new lyrics and few chord changes to it and used it again and again. The slow songs tend to all be paced the same with the same drum beat. It's not a totally crap album, just overrated in my opinion. Didn't live up to the 5 year wait/hype. SoulSeven said:

Nah..we ain't ass kissers. If we were talking bout anyone else we might be ask kissers. But Prince is genuine mucho talented so we set out standards pretty high. And no matter what you think bout Prince, most of the talent out there ain't talented enough to wipe his ass. As for Alicia Keys..sorry but I don't get the big hpye bout her either. So she can play the piano..big WOOP! So can a ton of other more talented folks who never make it. She's this years hot commodity, next year it will be some one else. We'll have to wait and see if she'll have any longevity [This message was edited Thu Apr 11 6:27:29 PDT 2002 by CmputrBlu]

As someone that knows "Questlove" personally, I can tell you with sincerity that he is an insecure enigma at best and a backstabbing hypocrite at worst. For someone with as many accolades and acclaims you would think that he would care less if someone else got theirs. Lo and behold he will do any and everything to keep anyone down that threatens his being admired. I'm thinking that he should change his name to Questhate, it would be more fitting. I've read him on Okayplayer.com on numerous occasions and everything he says always comes back to him. He doesn't have enough of a good discography to possibly think that he is all that. Being in his presence is even more sickening than one could imagine, he oozes insecurity. Even D'Angelo is distancing himself, hasn't anyone noticed?

damn breakdown, i hope i dont ever have friends or people that know me personally to hate on me on someone else's boards. do ?uest a favor and tell him about himself if you know him so well. like a few folks have said on this board, ?questlove is talented, dont deny his talent because he made comments about other drummers and one of his all time favorite songs. thats like saying mary j. blige cant sing at all because chaka khan hates on her every chance she gets for messing up her song, 'sweet thing'. not everyone can play as well as john blackwell or ?uestlove for that matter. when i can hear/buy the albums of all the people hating on this board, then ill value your opinion of another musician's work. anyone can be a critic, especially when they know they couldn't do better themselves.
