Blue t-shirt!? I think I'm the guy you're talking about, but I had a purple button down shirt, and I thought I was lookin clean 8). Yeah, I was just dancing, groovin to Xenophobia, watchin the man, and he looks me dead in my face and waves me up on stage, and I was like :O, I hope I wasn't too rude with the girl I was supposed to be dancin with, all I wanted to do was check him out jammin on the keyboards. I didn't look too stupid did I? I went to all three nights, and they got progressively better. Sunday night was unbelievable. I don't think the crowd was feeling PR all that much, the arm wave was real weak. O and by the way this is not an April fools joke, it all happened.

I don't know why but I'm surprised to hear people gushing over whether or not he plays PR. Don't get me wrong, it's the signature song, a beautiful song, blah, blah, blah. But I simply CANNOT WAIT to hear the stuff I've NEVER heard live. No, I haven't seen him in concert 50 times (only 6, HAA!) but the other stuff on the setlist is what I'm gonna go nuts over. Hell, he could sing One Nite Alone over & over, I'd be just fine... I know exactly what you're saying! I was a little disappointed that he even played it last night. I was hoping for maybe Free or Extraodinary (which he said at Saturday's soundcheck that they were rehearsing for Sunday's show)! It sounded GREAT live!! I understand both sides of this one. Hearing Purple Rain live would be cool, but then again I would love to hear Days of Wild - perhaps moreso. In the end, though, he could come out and play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" on Schroeder's toy piano and I would be enthralled.

EXTRAORDINARY?????!!!!!?????!!!!! See, THIS is what makes me INSANE!!! I'm dancing in my chair right now, flailing my arms & cheezin' like a lotto winner at the mere thought that I might one day hear this live!!!!! WOOOOO-HOOOOO!!! Now I'm REALLY jealous of you, Alexnvrmnd - lucky, LUCKY dog!!! ::::I gotta calm down:::: . [This message was edited Mon Apr 1 6:58:59 PST 2002 by CalhounSq] Did I mention that he also did Joy In Repetition, All Blues (by Miles Davis)!!!!!, Alphabet St., The Jam, It's Alright, another blues jam, and Beautiful Strange at Saturday's soundcheck! Of course, this is in addition to Extraordinary. It was all right, but I was SO pissed because he didn't do When Doves Cry (obvious sarcasm)!

Prince actually apologized for starting the soundcheck so late. He said he had been at "the kingdom." He then asked how many of us had gone to church today, to which very few raised their hands. Someone then yelled out "This is church." Prince got a funny look on his face and said: "This is definitely NOT church!" Some woman put a CDR on the stage containing her personal "cover" of Crazy You. Prince got REALLY annoyed and told her to come take it back. He asked her if she had gotten a license to do it, and she tried saying she had talked to Londell. Prince had a "whatever" look and said "Londell didn't write that song, I did." He then mentioned how Alicia Keys hadn't gotten a license to cover How Come.... Someone asked why he let her come to the Celebration then, and he said: "She's cool, it's her record company (i.e. Clive Davis)." Then he started saying how "did you notice how nobody covered my songs until I started fighting with my record company." "The first was Sinead O'Connor covering NC2U." Damn, I was annoyed by that lady. She kept goin' on and on about that damn song. It was only one extra verse...get over yourself!! Can you believe she actually had the nerve to say, "Sonny used to take CDs!", and "You don't wanna hear what you inspired?" I don't think he heard that the Sonny comment, because I think he would've been all over her on that one! And, I really could care less about that language arts teacher whose students wrote stuff about Prince while listening to TRC! Who cares? I am 43. I have been to 100’s of concerts. On a prince fan scale of 1 – 10 where 10 is a fanatic I’m probably about an 8. I own about 7 of his albums/cd’s, my sister turned me onto him the week the 1999 album came out. I have seen prince three other times in large venues, but not in the last 9 years or so. I was very impressed by all of his shows in the past.
Last night’s show (3/31/02) may have been the best concert I’ve ever seen in my life, period. The sound check was nice. I’ve never been to one as a part of an audience before. Near the beginning we were all very quiet. Prince was off stage talking on the wireless mike. “They’re all being very quite…cause they don’t want to talk over their tape recorders!” I love the Acid Jazz direction his latest stuff has gone. I really like the Larry Graham Funky stuff. The first album I ever purchased was on the night of my 10’th birthday in 1968. It was Sly and the Family Stone’s “STAND”. The band is tighter than the spandex on some of the women he dragged on stage to dance. I really like his heavy metal/bluesy guitar moments; head back, wailing away with the best of them. I’m not a fan of most of his ballad’s (I’m just not a ballad fan), but I have never seen a crowd know all of the words to that many songs. During the ballad segment of the show the crowd (mostly women) were singing along as well as a hired choir would. Hair Stands up on the back of your neck moment #1: At the normal end of one song (right before he went into NC2U) the crowd kept singing and went into a chant. He had played the last chord of the song, but decided to play some improve off of the chanting/singing in the crowd. Back and forth, back and forth, until he just went “whew” and pushed himself away from the keyboards. I’ve seen Jazz musicians improvise with each other, but I’ve never witnessed an artist improvise musically with the audience. Dang! Hair Stands up on the back of your neck moment #2: Third encore, second song (This was a three hour show yawl!) I’m sitting in the 9’th row on the floor stage right and I see Mr. Santana sliding on stage. It took him about 12 seconds to acclimate and start to play like he had been there all night. His guitar style is so unique and powerful. If I were not having a final four party tonight I’d be at the Santa concert in a second. At the end of the last song, Prince faced Santa, took off his guitar, held it front of him with both arms, palms up. He bowed his head, kneeled down and placed his guitar on the floor at Santa’s feet, smirking all the time. Carlos was laughing hard. Heaven folks, heaven. And, I really could care less about that language arts teacher whose students wrote stuff about Prince while listening to TRC! Who cares? Talk about shit EVERYBODY wants to hear/know...like the Celebration or something. No offense to the lady, but the language arts lady was a bit annoying as well. What basically happened is that her elemtary students wrote a big card for Prince, which is cool. Then she started telling him how as an assignment to them, she made them pick their favorite song on the radio and then see how many times it was played on that station every two hour period. (Basically, her assingment mimicked his "Strange Relationship" intro.) Now I'm not questioning this person's integrity, but can you be any more of a kiss-ass? I mean, just because Prince makes a speech about some issue at all his concerts, do you have to pretend that you just happened to notice the exact same thing? It was obviously a contrived attempt to get recognition from Prince, which it did. Again, I'm not questioning her integrity or the point she was making with the kids, but it's just a bit too over-the-top for my tastes. There's no need to kiss his ass about every issue he chooses to raise. It's not like he's going to decide, "Hey you're really cool, do you want to move to MPLS and live next to Larry and Tina?" It would be like if I told Prince that I teach history to kids so I take them to the Lincoln memorial so they can go see a statue of a racist. Or maybe I'll have kids write an essay about how the original Greek translation of the Bible uses the word stauros. Whether or not it's true and regardless of whether you agree with him, people should think with your own mind and not simply do things that you think will make you popular with him. I'd rather get no recognition and be an anonymous face in the crowd at the soundcheck than to be a blind follower with no originality. No Candy 4 Me

NOW....that i have had a few hours sleep, just some additional notes from the show:
1. Avalanche is da shit!!!! thought provoking and when he sang A.L. was a racist, a hearty round of applause from (most) of the audience. 2. Purple Rain--I had sold my sister to come to the show because he WOULDN'T sing it--but that encore was like watching MTV unplugged--. It just fit in with everything he was playing...no roaring guitar solo..just laid back and inspired. Kind of like if he sang the bluesy version of Thieves in the Temple--same words, different vibe. 3. The tone of the show was very mature...I can only speak for myself, but to hear Prince speak about racism, segregation radio stagnation and other relevant issues makes me so happy...he has grown so much from those days of sex sex and sex...i love those songs, but it shows a maturity to expand beyond them. he was so playful on stage, not like on AmericanBandstand 22 years or so ago...some performers don't change for the most part....i'm glad he opened up a little. 4. Santana--Just kind of came out of nowhere--floppy hat, kind of look--i said to myself, shit!! that's Santana--most of the people around me didn't really catch it at first i don't think--my friend was at the Wizards/Mavericks game and said, yeah that's what he had on. The solo on Anna Stesia was amazing....but JIR (that is the definitive booty licking song, BTW)..I would pay sooooo much to get that on CD...if they never rehearsed that together, you would never know. Two great guitarists, one singing, one playing...definitely worth the price of admission. Prince, Blackwell, Najee, Larry Graham and Santana on the same show..if u ever loved music in the 70's/80's, whether, funk, jazz, latin,....the over 30 crowd was treated to a rarity today--muscianship. THANKS PRINCE FOR A GREAT NIGHT!!! DRE you look better on your facebook page than you do in person

i became an NPG Club member about a week ago....since then, i have seen two soundchecks...Santana...and i got called up on stage to dance....i may have looked silly dancing in my Doc Martens but i could die now....Prince gets better and better....catch this tour if you get a chance...the band he's got is awesome!

Went to both Sat n Sun and am still in a daze. I won't chime in on others' very thorough and informative reports, but, yes - it all happened. And John Blackwell is just superb. I've seen Dennis Chambers, Neil Peart, Manu Katche, Bill Bruford, Steve Gadd, etc. Blackwell is off in the stratosphere...

When you requested Power Fantastic, Prince actually said "We should play that tonight." I was preying, but oh well.... Najee was too funny! He in fact did not know four of the songs, and he then got all upset because he didn't know where Prince was. (Prince was chilling in the back testing the sound from the soundboard area, and Najee didn't know where Prince's voice was coming from. Najee looked a bit upset. Prince asked him if he wanted to run though anything; it was a bit confusing if the four songs were the Larry Graham set that they played, or something else (like Extraordinary, etc.) that he had planned to play. He did state that he was not going to play the Santana Medley because he doesn't like to cover him when he is in the audience, but then he ended up doing it anyways. I was thinking that maybe he had planned to end the first set with something new (like Extraordinary/Everlasting Now/Last December) but Najee didn't know the material yet. No Candy 4 Me
