My daughter met Mani at her 1st concert ever! Took my daughter for her 8th birthday to see P. in San Diego. I had already gone to Sac and Fresno the prior 2 nights. We had floor seats in the 15th (last) row of section MM. It took about 2 minutes to figure out i shouldn't be disapointed at being the furthest i've ever been out of the 5 Musicology shows i'd seen. Because our section was where the band entered and exited i knew that Lyric (my daughter) would have a chance to shake hands with the band.
As it turns out that was true and then some. She was very excited when most of the band members waved hi to her and even Candy came over to shake her hand. But that was just the beginning. She was enjoying the show and having a great time and it was time to rest her legs during the first interlude. During which i looked back at the Soundboard and saw that Larry Graham was there with his wife. So i took the moment to tell Lyric about him and his bass playing and pointed him out to her. Well, he didn't see us but i noticed someone waving at me and lyric...after a few seconds i realized it was Mani. I told Lyric who was waving to her and she was very excited. During Maceo's Ray Charles tribute Larry walked towards backstage and i called out his name so Lyric could wave hello. Say what you will about Larry and his influence on P. for better or for worse but he was amazingly nice and came over and talked with Lyric for at least 2 minutes. She was really feeling the concert experience at this point and then the acoustic set kicked off. Once that ended and he went into the last jam part of the show Lyric and i were dancing in our seats and i looked behind me and Mani was video recording the show and the crowd. She saw me look and pointed the camera at us so Lyric could dance...she was a little shy and waved to the camera but wouldn't dance. So Mani smiled and we turned and began enjoying the show again when i noticed that Mani had went about 15 feet to the left of us and was recording Lyric dancing her tail off while standing on her seat. Lyric had no idea until i told her afterwards and she was so excited when i pointed out that she would forever be on Prince and Mani's home video of this show. Finally the show was coming to an end and we were awaiting the encore when Lyric (who looked back more than a few times to smile towards Mani, she was starstruck i guess) looked back one last time and Mani saw her and came over and to our surprise introduced herself to Lryic. My little girl was just floored...Mani couldn't have been nicer and talked to us for a good 2 or 3 minutes about Lyrics first concert experience and she even asked if Lyric needed earplugs. I thanked her for being so nice towards Lyric and adding a great behind the scenes touch to the show for her. Of course Dad didn't mind being so close up with a woman as fine as she looked. Needless to say my little girl had the time of life...she loved the show, met Mani and had several band members shake her hand after the show as well. She told me she wants to take guitar and bass lessons and called her mom immediately and could barely contain her excitement relaying her concert experience. I just had to share my joy for her as well and how happy i am that Prince has shown her the value of Real Music and the magic and surprises you never know might take place at a P. show. peace, a proud dad and his new Prince protege Lyric.

Boy that Prince Family is a nice group of people!!!! yes, she already had earplugs but i wish i would have taken the ones Mani offered so Lyric could keep them as part of her collection box she put together after the show. Anyways it was great and the next day was labor day so no school...she got to sleep in and then go to Sea World. Man it's good to be a kid huh? lol

actually come to think of it i didn't notice one. If she does it must be pretty subtle or else i was too caught up in my daughters moment to notice. And my eyes were working harder than my ears you know what i'm saying? LOL

How cool! Thankx for that report! "I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. Of that thirty percent, I'll bet the public has heard twenty percent of it." - Susan Rogers, "Hunting for Prince's Vault", BBC, 2015

Great story!
Prince's camp has been really cool with the kiddies this whole concert tour. My 9 yr old was given drumsticks from John B himself, a tambourine by Candy Dulfer, and shook hands with Maceo Parker!!! Class act, this Musicology tour. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

What an amazing Dad!!! What a great way to foster a talent a child has and to spend time together. I am sure that, aside from the night's wondrous events, your daughter will remember this most as a "me and my dad" story.
