How did "Cream" get by the Jehovah censor board?

I was wondering why the JW's let Prince play "Cream" and not any other "dirty" songs. I think lyrically speaking, "Cream" is pretty damn dirty.. he's talking about ejaculation for f@ck sake!

("Cmon and blow it..... get on top..". I mean seriously this aint no bible class..)

Anyway, just curious, I thought the crowd loved it along with LRC, and it's ironic that "gett Off" , "Erotic City" and others seem to me to be just as dirty as "Cream" but he hasn't been playin those lost gems this tour..

i don't think it's that dirty. you can blow cream off the top of a cappucino, ya know. i know we all know what he's talking about, but the fun of the song is that it can be taken completely innocently without batting an eye, or if ya want, you could think of it as a song about man juice. shrug

It's like going "Down South . . . to Atlanta." It's not what the words might mean. It's about where your HEAD is and what the words mean to you.

He, IMO, is talking about the "cream" rising to the top. As in cream on top of the milk. The rest of the lyrics fall in line with this interpretation, I think.

Erm, that's a misconception. Cream is the word Prince uses for 'pop music'. Listen to the lyrics. It's all about pop music and getting to the top of the charts. It you hear otherwise then you're just falling for Prince's innuendo.

Remember this? "U never would have drank my coffee if I had never served U cream"

And besides, the JCB only seem to might expcitly stated stuff, not implied.

I think the question should be "How did 'Shhh!' get past the JW censorship board?"

I mean really:

I'm gonna do you after school like some homework, am I gettin' you hot?

That's much more nasty than Rhonda walking into a restaurant with the outfit on that she wore at that night's concert (i.e. lingerie).
No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Sex is not love. Love is not sex. Putting words in other people's mouths will only get you elected.

Actually,I don't think "Cream" is a a dirty song at all.The song isn't about sex,it's about being motivated and having the self-esteem to get to the top.It seems to be based on the popular phrase "the cream always rises to the top".He titled the song "Cream" just to raise a few eyebrows, but the song could have easily been titled "Strive".

lol or at least, that's how i interpret the lyrics, lol.

Cream is not nasty at all. Cream rises to the top, and Prince is referring to himself as "Cream" in this song, he has even said that he "wrote" this song while looking in the mirror.

As for the video .. now that's nasty... but it's alright.

With that said ... I think that if you are listening ... Prince is still a nasty boy. If he wasn't, he would have changed the words to or wouldn't be singing ...

I Wanna Be Your Lover (... I wannna be the only one you come for)
Kiss (... my love will be your food)
DMSR (Well, he did water that one down [unfortunately] ... but he still talks about getting busy in the middle of a restaurant)
Little Red Corvette
Let's Work

But it's all good though

If Prince totally censored himself, he would have nothing to sing... and who would want that?

What's wrong with Let's Work? It's just a dance craze -- was originally going to be called "Let's Walk" to capitalise on a dance craze goin' round in '81 called The Walk.

Let's Work

1 2 3

Let's work {x2}

I've had my eyes on U
Ever since U walked in the room
Come on and take my hand
Don't try 2 understand

Oh baby, nothing can stop us now
I'm gonna show U how
Show U how 2 work
Come on, let's have some fun
We'll work till the morning comes
I wanna see U work, come on!

I'd love 2 turn U on
And work U all night long
If I could get U in the raw
Baby, I'd make U climb the walls

Oh yeah, nothing can stop us now
I'm gonna show U how, oh yeah
Show U how 2 work
Come on, let's have some fun
We'll work till the morning comes, baby
I wanna see U work, come on!

Come on, baby
Let's work {x2}

Let's work, alright, we're gonna work all night
Everybody work, that's right, everybody
Everybody work, alright, we're gonna work all night
Everybody work, that's right, everybody
Everybody (Work)

Nothing can stop us now
I'm gonna show U how (Let's work)
I'm gonna show U how, oh baby (Work)
Come on, let's have some fun
We'll work till the morning comes (Let's work)
We'll work till the morning comes (Work)

Nothing can stop us now (Ain't nothing gonna stop us) (Let's work)
I'm gonna show U how, oh yeah (Work)
Come on, let's have some fun, oh yeah (Let's work)
We'll work till the morning comes
Ooh, everybody say (Work)

We're gonna work all night, everybody work (Let's work)
That's right, everybody
Everybody work (Let's work)

Let's Work is about sex, like Private Joy is about masturbation. You know how cryptic P can be. Listen to the Let's Work 12 in, is more explicit..."I'll work you, 'til you're soft and wet. Hard dick and bubblegum is all you get.'

I definitely think what makes people think of Cream as a risque song is the video (and the Gett Off video, same people Diamond and Pearl). If there were no video, most people wouldn't interpret it that way.

But I thought he was using the word "cream" in the "hip hop" sense -- as in money.

When I realized that -- I thought, oh, this song isn't nasty as all. I thought it was nasty at first, but then I really listened to it and said, "Oh, this song isn't a nasty as I thought!"

He said he wrote the song while looking in the mirror and look:

Cream
This is it
It's time 4 U 2 go 2 the wire
U will hit
Cuz U got the burnin' desire

It's your time (Time)
U got the horn so why don't U blow it
U are fine (Fine)
U're filthy cute and, baby, U know it

It just sounds as though he is talking about his music career.

CHORUS:
Cream - Get on top
Cream - U will cop
Cream - Don't U stop
Cream - Sh-boogie bop

cream -- you will cop (like you will get money if you get on top)
cream -- don't you stop (maybe PRINCE thought about giving up, but he's the best so he won't ever stop. He's just talking to himself in the mirror, getting back his confidence). Same with the lines below, maybe he was thinking about going "pop" and this is just saying, "Man, you don't have to settle for that, be who you are ...":

U're so good
Baby, there ain't nobody better (Ain't nobody better)
So U should
Never ever go by the letter
(Never ever)
U're so cool (Cool)
Everything U do is success (Ooh)
Make the rules (Rules)
Then break 'em all cuz U are the best
Yes U are

He's talking about himself. And he does make the rules and break 'em cos he can. Like now he's being "the faithful man" -- but when he wants to break that rule, he will!

Look up in the air, it's your guitar
-- Wait, I just love this line!!

Do your dance
Why should U wait any longer?
Take your chance
It could only make U stronger
It's your time (It's your time)
U got the horn so why don't U blow it (Go on and blow it)
U're so fine (U're so fine)
U're filthy cute and, baby, U know it (U know it)
Come on

I don't know how to explain it, but I can only say, it's not a nasty song, it's about him and his music career and him reassuring himself (i.e., "ur so fine" or "take your chance" or "it's your time")

I'm wondering how the JW's can tell Prince what he can or can't sing/play on stage. Didn't he spend a chunk of his career and life trying to get free of external control over his work? confuse

Sooner or later he will find out all about that!! I never got too worried abot him becoming a JW because it seems when you are famous the rules are diffreent. (like MJ grabbin his damn dick all the time-he didn't get shunned for that). I almost wish they would come down on him more so he could get pissed with it and move on to a different religion. But that's just MY selfish evil thoughts

Maybe if Prince finds out about how according to JWs, he would have been disowned by his family and church. Hell, that would be a long time before his recording career if he was having sex before marriage.

JWs regularly disown their loved ones.

That aside and the musical control aside as well, I don't understand how Prince could believe in a faith the contradicts all he sang about. The Cross, Heaven/Hell, Jesus. So now Prince believes It was a stake not a cross. He definately ain't getting into Heaven, but maybe earth Heaven? Jesus wasn't anything more than a great teacher.

The difference is ...HE is deciding what to play because of the way HE feels about things, not the way JWs feel about things.
Believe me, if he was listening to everybody else, he would have a very different set list...Shhhhh would prob not be included.
Prince is doing what PRINCE has decided based on HIS application of what HE believes.
Freedom....to make choices...that is what he is doing and has always done.

So he learned the Cross was an inaccuracy...big deal!
But U say Jesus was no more than a "great teacher"?????

Smart, but no. I am pointing out that to JWs Jesus is nothing more than a great teacher. OK, king. Whatever you want to call him, but he is not God in the flesh. I think we can agree JWs view it that way.

As for a mistake in the cross. I don't have a clue where JWs found that. I mean it states clearly that Jesus had nails, yes nails (plural) through his hands and feet. Let me know if you need me to quote that scription (I ain't that religious, just spiritual). Therefore, why would it take more than one nail it it was a stake? Also, where is the misinterpretation of crucifix?

Another thing, I'm reading a lot of 'Jehovah's Witnesses won't let him do that or do this'. Whatever Prince does or any other Jehovah's Witness is entirely up to them. How they choose to lead their lives is based on their own Bible based conscience. There are obvious no no's such as: "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, and they are fornication, uncleanness, loose conduct, idolatry, practice of spiritism, enmities, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, contentions, divisions, sects, envies, drunken bouts, revelries, and things like these. As to these things I am forewarning YOU, the same way as I did forewarn YOU, that those who practice such things will not inherit God's kingdom." -Galatians 5:19-21.

Apart from the blatantly obvious each of Jehovah's Witnesses lead their lives according to their own choices based on the guidance and principles set in God's word the Bible.

Yeah, and u just keep on believing that. I would try to reply explaining the way religion interprets the bible, but that would be like talking to a brick wall. No offense, but you can't answer why you believe crucifix is a misinterpretation, you just keep quoting scripts. Try and go back to when you learned the scripts and who taught you what they meant, cause I guarantee it wasn't you who said, "ahh, I get it now," it was the Watchtower.

All religions messed up, specially when you trace them back to their origin. Yeah know, JW is right, and in fact no religion is right. Religion is man made, and to think your religion is the ONLY RIGHT ONE, shows your arrogance in the human race.
