Aug. 9th Atlanta Show had just one BIG problem

It ended. Sniff sad

What an awesome show. And the Time with Morris and Jerome provided a knockout opening for Prince. However, it "seemed" to me that their sound did not seem to have quite the clarity that Prince had. But maybe I'm just getting old and can't hear as well as I used to. And, since Morris and Jerome are about the same age I am, their intense performance just blew me away.

And then came Prince. What can I say? You know it was good. Great. Awesome. And then some. Oh, Rhonda was really ravishing in red! She looked so good my eyes are worn out from switching back and forth from Prince to Rhonda. (with occasional glances elsewhere heheh) - John Blackwell was at the top of his performance curve. He really must be throwing himself into his work after his tragedy. I knew he was good and have seen hime before but he was actually better than in other performances I've seen which I didn't think possible.

Now my only real complaint is that I was such an ass I didn't get tickets to tomorrows show.

Oh well.

I agree wholeheartedly!!! I was there Monday night and Prince was unbelievable. John Blackwell continues to prove why he is one of the best drummers to ever sit behind a kit. Last night was phenomenal; Morris and the time opening, Prince performing a beautiful acoustic version of Adore(to make up for calling the ladies out, classic), Call My Name as an encore and an unbelievable version of Pop Life!!! I'm really looking forward to tonight's (8/10)show.thumbs up!

Went and saw Prince at the Philips arena in Atlanta on August 9, 2004.We were suppose to leave from my house at 9 a.m., but as is usually the case, we left later than we planned. Finally got on the road from Florida around noon. Had a relatively uneventful drive. We made good time and got checked into the hotel around 6 p.m. Atlanta Time. Got changed and headed to the show. Surprisingly we got to the arena with no problems. Got parked, picked up our tickets and grabbed a bite to eat at the CNN center. Strolled into the place around 7 p.m., grabbed a drink and got seated. We were in section 6 on the floor, right of center behind Chance's keyboard.Sat and waited. 7:30p.m. came and went.

We figured if the Time were going to open it would be by 8:00p.m.It was a little bit after that and my buddy had just told the people next to us it looked like they weren't going to play when the familiar ticking started. We immediately jumped to our feet and started cheering. As soon as the intro stopped, the mother fucking Time proceeded to tear it up for the next 45 minutes.

Here is the setlist
1. Dat Intro
2. Ho Parade
3. Wild and Loose
4. The Stick
5. Fishnet
6. The Oak Tree
7. Jerk Out
8. Get it Up
9. Cool
10. 777-9311
11. Gigolos get lonely too
12. The Bird
Encore
13. Jungle Love
The band was Tight as always. Chance joined the band for the whole set. The other keyboard player that has been playing with them since Chance joined Prince's band was not present. A high energy show, only slowing down for Gigolos. Freeze played an incredible bass line before Jungle Love. This was the first time I had seen they do that. It definitely adds to the enjoyment of their show if you are close. Jason and I agreed that Prince was going to have to throw down to follow that.

Well Prince definetly didn't disappoint. If the Time raised the roof, Prince tore the mother off.

Here is the setlist
1. Musicology
2. Let's go Crazy
3. I would die 4 U
4.When Doves Cry- with the Kiss guitar part
5. Baby I'm a Star- with 1999 intro. The normal part of the song was about average length, but then they jammed on it for awhile.
6 Shh!-incredible guitar in this song
7. D.M.S.R- this jam went on for 10-15 minutes. Definitely a high point, included pass the Peas
8. I feel for U-glamorous life intro
9. Controversy- another long funk jam. At one point Prince laid down and acted like he was sleeping while Chance put a blanket on him. Did the housequake chant and then back into Controversy. The band left the stage at this point. Renato stayed and was doing his thing.
10. God(instrumental)- with samples from the movie
11. What a wonderful World
12. Sometimes it snows in April
Prince returned for the Acoustic set
13. Little Red Corvette
14. Peach
15. I wanna be your lover
16. Prince and the Band- This was the first time I've heard this and I was digging it
17.The Beverly Hillbilies theme
18. Alphabet St
19. The Rules- This is just my guess at the title from reading previous concert reviews. It consisted of prince telling an officer about different things he told his baby not to do. I hate to say it, but at this point I was getting bored with the acoustic set
20. Adore
21. I could never take the place of your man
22. Jailhouse Rock
23. Cream
24. Raspberry Beret
25. 7- The full band comes back in
26. Sign O' the Times- so much for my boredom. Lots of Guitar and horns. Another Jam
27. Pop Life- very Cool, first time I've heard this live and my favorite off Around the World in a Day. Prince looked right at me during the mailman line
28. Let's Work- another Jam, Prince played the Bass
29. U Got the Look
30. Life of the Party- Jason said Maceo played of something off one of his solo albums, but I don't know what it was
31. Soul Man- Chance on vocals
32 Take me with U- This concluded the main part of the show. The horn section each got their typical ending and John finished it off with the 777-9311 drumbeat and the We don't like new wave sample.

Encore
33. Call my Name
34. Purple Rain- shorter than the Essence fest version, but the actual solos were incredible

After the show we were debating which was better. This or the Essence fest. It's close. The Essence fest had all the guest, plus the opening set, but I think at this one the actual performances of the songs were better, especially the ones that he lengthened out and jammed on. That and being 10 feet from the stage all night definitely adds to the enjoyment and it sure beats being half a mile away in the Superdome. We did agree that the Time need to open for him every night. Not only did they put on their typical awesome show, they pushed Prince to yet another level

You forgot 'Kiss.' I believe it was after "Take Me With You." (That's when my daughter was on stage. She's the one who actually sang the word "kiss" in his mic.)
