Prince- A Well Taught Lession O' Musicology iN ANewPowerDetroit (7/30)

Ok, so I've been to 5 Classes already...and thou I honestly have to say, this wasn't my favorite show, It was NYC Madison Square July 12th & 13th shows that taught me the bigger lesson with special appearances by Sheila E. and The Time, not to mention, the acoustic sets were longer and just more interaction from the crowd...and how could I forget the Unbrella Effect during the encore of Purple Rain, which was absolutely amazing!

Now, with the Joe Louis Show, I actually scored MainFloor Front Row, and it was my little brothers first time seeing Prince and his very first concert at that, so he enjoyed it more than I did!

Starting with the boots!
PRINCE, I know your only human...and sometimes a brotha's feet can get a lil tired from wearing heels on a nightly routine of 2.5 -3hour shows, so I can understand the flat gym shoes...but the attire is getting a lil sloppy!

PRINCE, is about wearing the best of the best clothes around, but please next time...no suit with t-shirt underneath and gym shoes...just a bit tacky! but your always beautiful indeed!

Ok, next...the first half of the show seemed a bit rushed...It didnt seem like the original set that Ive seen over and over again...which isn't a bad thing, but wasn't a good thing either...something was missing, I just couldnt figure that out!

The Jam/Pass The Peas...now its cute to play a little bit of these joints, but I'd say...for a hits show, it just doesn't work!
Because most of the ppl are there to hear the hits and you couldve made room to add a few old Princely Classics there...instead of the James Brown Tribute!
The Horns were always on point thou!

The Acoustic Set was Sloppy!
I'm sorry it was a bit rushed and I'd rather hear Automatic and Something in the water without guitar playing!

The Ride was amazing...YES!!! When you thought he was about to break into Question Of U and The One, he hit us with the rarely heard Prince Gem 'The Ride'...wow -words can't describe it, the guitar was crazy, not to mention the xperimentation of the band on the N.E.W.S piece was amazing...we need more of that on the next PRINCE Tour!!!

On a scale from 1 to 10, I'd have to rate this show a modest 7, which isn't bad at all...but I was really getting tired of ppl running up to front row, who wasn't suppose to be there and the guards who kept asking us for our risk bands to make sure we were sitting where we were suppose to be! but yet allowing the sleazy chicken heads right up to the front!

Prince Hightlights for me were the N.E.W.S bit, The Ride, Musicology Opening...always exciting!
Call my name and Purple Rain!

NOT2MENTION: CARMEN from NEWSBEAT 4! Up on Stage with the older guy in the purple suite,
Got down and dirty on the BallRoom Tip!!!
This is why I love my news from ch.4!!!

Hope I didnt sound too much like Evil white man, but I really have enjoyed all the PRINCE shows I've seen this year, this just wasn't my favorite, thou I did get to hear a few different joints performed on the set!

John Blackwell, Rocked as usual and is so adorable!!!
Grey Boyer -winked at me a few times and so did Candy!
Boy, their both rather sexy!!!

Can't waite for the next PRINCE ALBUM!!!
and Since Purple Rain Anniversary is this week...make sure you all join us iN ANewPowerDetroit as we Celebrate PRINCE's 20 Year Old Movie and Album, that made him a Household Name today!!!

I was there 2, at Joe Louis, & It is awsome to see him anytime, I thought this one was alot more entertaining then the Emancipation, & the Rainbow children tours. It was absolutly wonderful to see him sit down & do the unplugged thang, tottally fabulous. However, I did too notice, the tennis shoes ( to wich I do understand(but they looked like they came from K-marts)) & the sloppy dressing, but I was actually okay with that, nice to see he is human too. For once (unbelievable) I can say, I was dressier & decked out more then Prince(Gosh that sounds so funny). Yes, I did expect a bit more with his dressings, but I am okay with it i suppose, I think the show made up 4 it, 4 me. & Yes John Blackwell, ROCKED!!! He was awsome. Yes, I woulda picked quite a few different songs, I'm not a "Hits" fan either, but all is well just ta see him play.

P.S. " The Ride" almost made me cry it was so good!
& I did NOT like the changing of lyrics in D.M.S.R.
I know yer religious n all, but c'mon, no harm down in singin

But cha gotta admit, that B/W suit was ON POINT!

I agree that the Tshirt was a bit BLAND for Prince, and I noticed
he pulled out a mustard yellow hanky out of his blue suit towards
the end...maybe all his suits on the road are startin' to run together.

Time to TIGHTEN' UP...
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I agree with your review. Out of the 4 shows I have seen on this tour (3 concerts and the simulcast) this was my least favorite. I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe it was some of the songs he sung...maybe it was the "James Brown Tribute" as you put it. Maybe it was just a combination of things.

On the attire tip, yes, P was very sloppy. I could not believe he had on a Musicology muscle t-shirt under that sharp ass suit confused. That was wrong on so many levels.

With all that said, the show still rocked and more importantly I was glad that the people I went with got a chance to see at least some, not all, of the genius of Prince. They probably would have passed out if last night had been one of his top show. lol

I disagree no no no! I thought Prince looked very cute with the T-shirt under the suit. I also loved the shoes, but I didn't like that blue number with the stars on the shirt mad

Another thing, this show may have seemed a little sloppy because it was a bit rushed. He took the stage an hour late because he didn't want to come on stage until 75% of the audience was in the arena. Then, he still waited...The show was scheduled to start at 8 and be over at 11. But instead, it started at 9, but was still over by 11:15 because of issues with the Arena. People had to be out of there by a certain time. So we were actually jipped neutral So things were a little sloppy.

Also, notice how hot it was in the arena? Prince requested no air sad I was burning up.

It was rather warm in the arena. By the second song, I had sweat pouring off of my forehead.Once the packed arena started to move about to the music, the temperature must have gone up a whole ten degrees or more.

The first half of the show seemed to fly by like an out of control speeding train. Prince sped through songs as a dizzying pace. When he threw his blanket into the crowd, I was about 3 rows back from the fans that almost ripped it apart from excitment.

These Detroit fans were awesome. Every race, age, size, and background wa sin the house. It was awesome! I saw children and their middle aged parents jamming along side one another. Music is so powerful and so important. I believe that without it, we are doomed.

I actually didnt notice Carmen Harlen. How could I have missed her? Geez sad

We had a great time at the show but my favorite Prince concert that Ive ever attended was my first one in December 1997 at the Palace of Auburn Hills. I was 18 years old. I was a changed young man after that! This was my 6th Prince show since then.

I agree. I loved that he wore sneakers. They were still a wedge heel, but come on, the man is human and I honestly can't understand how people can dance in high heels.

pissed and I was one of the ones late trying to get in from the Lodge. It was jammed from downtown all the way to the 96/75 split. I couldn't believe it. What is this you got to be out by a certain time. bawl I have waited 10 years to go to a concert. Don't tell me it wasn't the show of the year.
hmph! I refuse to listen to y'all! (Lalalalalala, I'm not listening to you)

yup, I was hot too. I think that is not unusual. I hear Aretha Franklin puts no A/C in her contracts.

I was in the nosebleed section just behind you, I think Carmen was on the opposite side. I think I heard she was next to JB's drum set... and she probably didn't leave her wing so we missed it.

Prince's attire.....
Dude came to Work on Friday! completely thru down!
the T-shirt and no heals shoes were perhaps cuz he felt just like gettin down dancin and jammin all nite.

The setlist
Friday was a run thru for Saturday FILMED show. Which I completed enjoyed.

I have been to very many shows this tour and Friday has got to be in the top 3
