There was a shitload of confusion and waiting around (they told us to get there no later than 12:30; it started at 2:45!) until this thing got started. While waiting around, I did get to sneak a peek of the band soundchecking "D.M.S.R.", which was cool. Anyway, they played first. They did "Musicology", "Kiss" (featuring WRONG lyrics from several people who Prince pointed the mic at), and "D.M.S.R.", which had about 2 dozen people dancing with the band. There was about a 15 minute break before the interview started. A couple minutes before the interview started, I was lucky enough to see Prince sitting on stairs that were out of sight from most people, and just be his regular self for a brief moment. He started chatting with this little boy who came up to him. It was a very interesting experience. The interview was about 20 minutes long. One thing I didn't like is that the audience questions were scripted. While we were waiting around, some lady came out with little index cards with questions on them, and gave them to a few select people. They were good questions, but it kind of pissed me off, as I had a real question I wanted to ask (I wanted to know about P's relationship with Miles Davis). Anyway, I can't wait to see this thing. They're going to edit it apparently, so that the interview is first, and the music second. Another good thing is that I'll finally find out if I can actually dance or not.

I Couldn't get into the taping(I Have already dealt with my anger) so I did the next best thing, staked out the back of Much Music(While everyone else waited at the front(DUH!), and I was right, I got to meet the band and talk to them for a few minutes while they were getting on the busses(The Bus at the front was a decoy).Even though I didn't get to meet The Man himself(I wouldn't have known what to say anyways) meeting the members of the band was pretty cool, and it made me feel better after getting a $60.00 parking ticket earlier in the day:(

The bus out front of Muchmusic was not a decoy. Prince walked right into it after he was finished. I also met the band members yesterday shortly before their show. The nicest was Candy Dulfer. Maceo Parker is a complete A-hole. He has a lot of growing up to do. The band had 2 buses. A yellow one and a black one. Prince had a red one.

That's right! He walked right by me and I yelled "Great show last night!!" He turned around, looked and smile. It was worth it since I also didn't get to be a part of the taping.

I went down to Muchmusic after telling my boss that I had to go home from work...

Anyways, I get in line with the rest of the Music Club members and some folks who won tickets thru local radio and tv...

I'm not a member so I'm doing my best to get into the show. A friend of mine works for Much Music on the 5th floor so I page him and he takes me to his office. On the way there, I'm over hearing everyone in this place talking about how Prince is in the building. The place is electric... anyways, at this point, we could all hear the band doing the soundcheck to Musicology, Kiss and DMSR.

I finally get upstairs and my boy turns around and asks me if I want to watch and listen to the soundcheck... he turns on some TVs and the cameras are giving live feeds into all of the house TVs. It was pretty dope!!

Anyways, band finishes... my boy tells me that I gotta leave 'cause I'm about to pull a scam...

Here's the scam: I went back downstairs where they were handing out wrist bands for the intimate and interactive with Prince. I get in line and ask the girl at the counter what she needs from me. I tell her that my name is on the list and I give her my last name. She checks the list and says my name ain't on it (obviously as I didn't sign up the night before)... naturally, I acted like it should've been as per confirmation from NPG MUSIC CLUB!! yeah right!!

Anyways, I jokingly asked for a refund and she laughs and suggests that I might be able to get in if I stood in the stand-by line. 10 minutes later we get asked to go inside and I'm placed by the producer of the set, right behind Mike Scott's guitars. We do some clapping exercises, etc, etc and then the band comes out after waiting like 2 hours!!

Prince was dope although he didn't play... but the NPG was super sick!! We got to hear all of the keyboard lines, the guitar lines, the drums, the bass and horns very clearly... the sound was perfect!!! DMSR was unbelievable... KISS is very good as well... a lot better than I thought when i heard this version on Ellen... Mike Scotts guitar parts were sick!!! At the end of the set, he asked me if I play and I said yes, "but you're fuckin super funky!!" He laughed... Chance looks like he's always having a good time... Rhonda looked sexy as a _____!! You fill in the rest!! John is dirty... like really, really dirty!!!

Anyways, band finishes and the interview begins... it was whatever. As usual, Prince talks a lot of shit and acts like his opinion is the end all and be all of ways to look at the subject at hand... Side note: Am I the only who wishes he would stop talking and just play and release records like he used to?

Anyways, moving on... one thing I did gather from the even was that some of us Prince fans need to start thinking for ourselves again!! I mean, it's nice to use Prince and the things he says as a template to looking at the world but we've got to be a little more critical of some of the things he says... enough of the bobblehead action!!

Prince started criticizing the younger musicians about how much they rely on technology... i agree, some of the pop products do and it shows... that's undeniable but there are a lot of musicians, especially in RnB, who are doing some seriously funky ass things with synthesizers and shit!! There isn't any strength in making a grand generalization of how technology is ruining the craft of music and using pop acts like Britney Spears, N'Sync, etc as proof. I think the craft is changing and Prince didn't try to keep up... it was an alternate environment to the one he grew up in... things change and so does the compisition of song.

Also, don't ever forget that at one time, Prince was being criticized for the same thing... People were saying that his music relied on technology too much and that he was ruining the craft... basically, what I'm trying to say is this: there's no such thing as right and wrong when you're making music... do what feels good... if the song is hot, the song is hot...

If Prince had this mentality when he started, well, we wouldn't have gotten a When Doves Cry, A Something In The Water Does Not Compute, Computer Blue, a Dorothy Parker, a Billy Jack Bitch... pretty much any and everything he does!!

Anyways, I want to leave on positive note: I had the bombest time... only a couple of hours after the Much More Music taping, I went to see the second show at the ACC in Toronto... and, as far as I'm concerned, it was much better than the 1st show I saw the night before!!!

The buses at the front were not decoys. There were 3 buses that showed up at different times and band members got off the first two and then eventually a red bus pulled up and Prince got off that bus.

Prince has always been more than a song and dance man. Since the beginning he has had somethings to say. Contrary to how you view it.

Here's the difference- Prince used technology in his music, but he could always do it for real. He used the computers and synths because it was new and different. Nowadays people do it mostly because it is trendy and it is easy. He isn't so much criticising people who write and play, he is commenting on the people who are seriously diluting the art in order for easy $$$$.
Here is an analogy: What some "musicians" are doing now like somone ordering fast food and posing like they are a gourmet chef. Yeah fast food/disposable music is fine every now and again but if you intake it constantly you'll get sick. It lowers everyone's standards and expectations.
