review of louisville, ky set list
sound check: slow funk guitar jam the other side of the pillow last december 20 minute discussion The show: piano medley: one night alone the beautiful ones venus de milo adore boys and girls nuder the cherry moon nothing compares 2 u purple rain the rainbow children muse 2 the pharaoh xenophobia a case of u mellow 1+1+1=3 love rollercoaster strange relationship sing a simple song la la la means i love you didn't you know when u were mine avalanche family name take me with u raspberry beret soul sacrifice 1rst encore: last december 2nd encore: piano medley #2: free starfish and coffee sometimes it snows in april i love u but i don't trust u anymore how come you don't call me anymore? anna stesia well, i'm finally back to atlanta. 2 friends and i drove from atlanta to louisville to catch this leg of the tour before he comes down to the atl. we got to the palace theatre at about 5:00. during the drive from atlanta, you go from eastern standard time to CST back to EST. so we thought it was only 4:00 and almost left to go eat, but matt suggested we tough it out. within minutes, they let us in for the soundcheck. if we had left, we probably wouldn't have gotten in. a lucky break! when they let us in, prince rhonda, j. blackwell, and renato were laying down a slow funk groove. as everyone took seats up front, prince says "hey, all of you aren't club members (they let in some 100 folks or so). he then asks, "so anyone play guitar?" three guys get up and jam on princes telecaster, prince screams the final solo. then a long bluesy version of the other side of the pillow, prince playing the hollow body gibson. then he asks, "who here can sing?" about 25 folks go up on stage and sing the chorus to last december (my favorite from the rainbow children). as the chorus is leaving the stage, a guy asks, "will you play at my church tomorrow?" prince responds, " do they allow rock music in your church ' he replies, " yes, i'm the pastor." prince then says to him to go to the mike and answer this question, "if so, then what's the difference from your church and a disco?" this fellow appeared to be a nice fellow, but was way over his head in this discussion. a 20 minute discussion on religion, church, ect. followed. having been in the celebration discussions, i would have preferred all jamming and music, but some responses were cool. A guy asked prince about whether he is inspired to writs lyrics or music first, to which he responded, " i am music." anyway, on to the show. it started with a 20 minute piano medley, with a long adore and a solo piano purple rain. i think that was his response to some disappointed fans missing the signature hits. the piano solo version was way cool, definitely different from the norm. one of the absolute highlights of the evening, was that prince's voice was spectacular. we noticed it during the soundcheck, he's never sounded as good, amazing. the meat of the show was new material from the rainbow children, this was the show i wanted to see. 1+1+1=3 was slaming as well as family name. i hadn't seen family name on other set lists, and was very happy to hear it. complete versions of take me with u and raspberry beret? yes, that's right. when i read other posts, i didn't believe it, but it's true. for those interested, he does no costume changes. and actually costume is not the right word, he wears clothes, not costumes for this show, a sharp, gray double breasted jacket, black slacks, black shirt with high neck, and white boots. it's definitely a different prince on stage. he doesn't do a lot of schtick, he lets the music speak for itself. this show is a must for true music lovers. jamesg ------------------------------------------------

Being happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect, it means you've decided to look beyond the imperfections... unknown | |
