I remember reading Rolling Stone in 1990 when he was on the cover, amazed that we had quotes for the first time in 5 years. Now he's joking with me at soundchecks !!!

psychodelicide said: Excellent report, Dennis, as usual. You missed one part though during the concert that was truly funny. Apparently, there was a lady sitting in the front row eating a chocolate sundae, and Prince says something like, "We have someone too cool sitting in the front row eating a chocolate sundae!" Prince then said to the man who was with her something about lifting her up onto her feet and "shaking what her mama gave her". Then Prince said to the woman, "I got something you need or something for you". and he sang "Other Side of the Pillow". -- lol!!!
I loved that Chocolate Sundae interruption. I'm glad people are adding tidbits to all the reports from different cities. It's great to relive it all !!!

And Prince shaking his head about "all died when you went away", I can totally understand. That's one of my all-time favorite Prince lines. Sounds like a classic if not legendary show. I was standing there grooving to that piano medley and when he did this part it just made me so glad to be there. It sure WAS a legendary moment to me !!!

MatthewCho said: This was my second Prince concert (first was "Hit N Run") and was floored.
Prince creates such a surrealistic environment in a small venue. I didn't have the same connection on the last tour. Even though he played less hits, he tore the roof off the Palace. He was more animated and personable than any other performer I have seen. He suprisingly bantered with the audience, cracked jokes, poked fun at his lyrics, brought people on stage (definitely NOT pre-selected), walked out into the crowd (he stood right in front of me in the fifth row on the side), and came out after the performance to shake a few hands. I was with the understanding that as Prince's career progressed he has become increasingly bitter and isolated. While I'm sure this holds true of the industry, he certainly isn't taking his fans for granted these days. I am a reborn Prince fan once again, and kick myself for not joining NPG before this concert. Looking forward to newly discovering older material that I did not pick up long the way, including the Crystal Ball set. Come back to Cleveland soon. - Matt This says it all !!! Thanks for the precise and relevant comments !!!

I was so taken by the experience that I didn't even realize the question was asked by Darren, next to me. Prince cracked up at that response !!!

Plesae do me a favour. When you're at the souncheck of the next concert you go to ask him if he intends to take the tour to Australia. You can tell him we are all dieing to hear this show downunder. Cheers:) Let me put that on my list of questions !!!

divo02 said: I can't believe y'all forgot when at the soundcheck somebody asked if Batman was his favorite superhero since he did the album. Prince said something about not believing in or liking superhero's and then said that him and Michael Jackson were supposed both do half of the album! Somebody then asked if they talk and Prince said "yeah we talk" and then another person said something like "you guys don't battle?", and Prince turned back toward the crowd and laughed with a funny ass look and said "NO!" Shit was pretty funny...
Another question was at which concert did the best questions at soundcheck happen. Prince said one of the more recent ones (probably after Buffalo) because we talked about "The Truth." A couple other religious questions were asked and Prince joked that "this is how it started!". Somebody asked if he read the Bible to which he replied yes...and another asked if he read any other books (I took it to believe holy books like the Koran and such) to which Prince replied that he used to but not anymore. Prince also joked about how a pastor at a recent show asked him to sing in his church. Prince joked and said "why to hear this?" and proceed to play his guitar in a loud/rock type way...it was pretty funny. No doubt he felt comfortable and at one time even commented that he was being a bad host since the band was trying to familiarize Najee into the show. They performed The Everlasting Now and Calhoun Square during the soundcheck. Thanks for posting. Mary and I sat at the computer creating our memories for over an hour, and it's always great to see additions, since it's so hard to remember all of it. I can't believe how much goes on all night. And with my short term memory loos, it's even worse !!!

jwsullivan said: The guitar IS an Ibanez. It's the George Benson model - GB10 or something like that. I think George actually gave him that guitar.
Not to sound nit-picky, but the song title is "1+1+1 Is 3" not "1+1+1=3". I keep seeing it the incorrect way and it's driving me crazy. Thanks for the info on the guitar. And don't worry about nit-pickin, my spell checker does not understand Prince song titles I posted the first set list from Saginaw so it looks like they have all been a cut & paste job to save time. So I will correct it next time.

MilkSode said: When you hear reports like this it makes me say "damn Prince is cool a dude"
When do yall think the turn around was as far as him now being so personal with the fans. I mean I remember even at Paisely with the body guards, now he just rolls and doesn't give a fuck. Which is nice MS That is what makes it so great for the NPGMC members. Prince seems very much at ease with all the interactions. In the Musical Portrait that we were able to download, which was originally shown in 1989, Randy Newman talked about how you could always tell Prince had a sense of humor from listening to his lyrics. It's there at the soundchecks for sure. He cracks them fast and furious. I think the turnaround may be that his wife was a fan herself, he has been exposed to that side, and has a realization that we are not all fanatic. It was a great experience !!!

Did anyone else like how he kept asking to turn on the house lights to see everyone?
A performer who WANTS to see his fans, what a concept. This is not the Prince we used to know! - Matt

dendmmr.... hun you forget to mention that during the show he stopped due to one woman not dancing when he asked everyone to dance. She was eating what he thought was icecream but it was really some kind of drink. He said that she was to "COOL" for everyone and then he sang the song with "COOL" in it in the beginning of the song. Other than that it was my first Prince concert... and it was very well done. My face was hurting cause I was smiling so much!
