Clarence Page: ‘Wokespeak’ ...

the constant changing and moving around of many terms and labels is tiresome. Most will never cover every facet of human life, experience or identity. And too many are thrust onto the persons they assume to be advocating for...

.

.

.

...is changing faster than I can keep up.

I remember when we were “colored.”

As in the NAACP, originally the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Then we became “Negroes,” as in “A group of Negroes was arrested today as they tried to register to vote in Mississippi.”

Then in the 1960s we became “Black,” as in “Black Power” and “Say it loud! I’m Black and I’m proud.”

Two decades later, Black leaders told news media that we would prefer to be called “African American” because as the Rev. Jesse Jackson said, it has more “cultural integrity.”

Then, as the diversity of racial and ethnic newsmakers and issues increased, the ancient label “people of color,” which dates back at least to the 1790s, regained popular usage.

And I marveled. I had lived long enough to see us go from “colored people” to “people of color.” Progress!

Unfortunately, it often is happening at a faster pace than that with which cultural slow pokes like me can comfortably keep up. As one who still is trying, I sympathize with my fellow stragglers.

For example, among the latest additions to fashionable neologisms is “BIPOC,” an acronym for people who are Black, Indigenous or other people of color.

I get it. That echoes the longer standing LGBTQI, which stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and/or questioning. Sometimes it is expressed as “LGBTIQA,” with the “A” standing for “Asexual” or “Ally.”

Media seem to be settling on LGBTQ, but this, too, can change and undoubtedly will. Culture clashes are inevitable and patience too often seems harder to find.

Such are the ways of “wokespeak,” as conservatives derisively label the new language of the political activist and ivory tower academic left.

I knew something has changed when the new word “Latinx,” a gender-neutral version of Latino/Latina, began to catch on much faster among political activists than among actual Latinos/Latinas.

James Carville Says ‘Stupid Wokeness’ Costs Democrats at the Polls

Lindsey Ellefson 1 day ago

Democratic strategist James Carville identified Wednesday what he believes is costing his party at the polls: “Stupid wokeness.”

“What went wrong is just stupid wokeness,” he told PBS NewsHour’s Judy Woodruff when she asked what happened Tuesday in Virginia, where Democratic gubernatorial incumbent Terry McAuliffe went down to Republican Glenn Youngkin. “This ‘defund the police’ lunacy, this ‘take Abraham Lincoln’s name off of schools.’ I mean that… people see that.”

He went on, saying that what he sees as wokeness “has a suppressive effect all across the country on Democrats.”

“Some of these people need to go to a ‘woke’ detox center or something,” he said.
“They’re expressing a language that people just don’t use and there’s backlash and a frustration at that.”

Youngkin won in suburban areas of Virginia where former president Donald Trump did not win in 2020 and did not run ads attacking Democratic President Joe Biden. Both of these facts were used on the Wednesday program to highlight how local and individualized Youngkin’s strategy was. According to Carville, Youngkin “let the Democrats pull the pin and watched the grenade go off.”

“Who could even think of something that stupid?” he continued.

“And they're suppressing our vote.

And I have got news for you.

You're hurting the party.

You're hurting the very people that you want to help.”

Carville concluded that this was something the Democratic Party had to focus on changing internally because as things are currently, it’s “annoying people” with “left-wing nonsense.

“We have got to stop,” Carville said.

“We have got to get off of this.

These people have got to understand they're not popular around the country.

People don't like them.

And they're voting because that's the only way that they can express themselves and how much they disagree with this.”

Carville nailed it, and it's going to cost the Democrats in 2022 & 24. They never learn.

Author claims news organizations are in 'woke stranglehold'

Author claims news organi...anglehold'

Batya Ungar-Sargon, the deputy opinion editor of Newsweek, argues in a new book that "wokeness" in the media is harming democracy and that journalists face "woke pressures" inside and outside the newsroom that influence how news is covered.

"Woke" is African American Vernacular English (formerly "ebonics" but that's debated) so anyone using it from out of its home dialect is suspect, obviously. It's from black abolitionary ideology of waking up from the systems of oppression which hold one down. This awakening is a good thing.

So, as an ex Navy cryptologist, when someone from another language, say Standard American Dialect started using it, just these past 3 years, they tried to twist the meaning. So when they turn something good into a bad thing, it means they didn't like those people. People who speak AAVE...who look... ahem...of color. Imagine telling on yourself like that.

See what I'm saying?

I read a The Root article in 2015 where they asked people to stop stealing dialectal words when they don't know what it means, & just for coolness points. Saying "ratchet" for messed up hair is cute & all but then when you code-switch to Standard American Dialect in front of police to weasel you're way out of trouble, you're in an unfair advantage. Some people's first language is AAVE that's what theyre more fluent in. But when talking to a white cop, what's he gonna prefer? The S.A.D. or the A.A.V.E.? Exactly. The Standard he knows.

Did you know there is a BSL? (Black Sign Language)

Case in point. You do not understand because you're a monolinguist. You don't speak a second language or dialect. So you don't understand. Maybe it's not you I was talking to. I speak Spanish, English & have been reading prince alphanumeric since I was a child which is based in AAVE. So if you don't know what things mean, don't pretend to just to speak over people. Especially if you're gonna steal jargon & change the definition like you're George Fuck!ng Orwell.

I wish all wight supremacists a very get out of my fandom.

I speak 4 languages (Dutch, German, English & Italian) and a Dutch regional dialect (Limburgs)
You're still full of shit.

The context the word is used in, defines it.
There are many similar words within a language which, depending on the context, have a different meaning.
