Meeting Between [pope]Francis and Biden ...

He has definatel been an 'interesting' chess piece to watch...

...Will Highlight Their Rift With American Bishops

VATICAN CITY — When Joseph R. Biden Jr. visits the Vatican on Friday, he will be the third American president Francis has met since becoming pope in 2013. Each has marked a distinct phase not only of his papacy, but also of the political upheaval in the United States and in its Roman Catholic church.

AAQ2RJB.img?h=450&w=799&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f&x=493&y=123© Guglielmo Mangiapane/Reuters Pope Francis at the Vatican on Monday. Each visit by an American president has marked a distinct phase not only of his papacy, but also of the political upheaval in the United States and in its Catholic church.

President Barack Obama shared Francis’ global magnetism, celebrity wattage and a focus on immigrants, climate change and the poor. President Donald J. Trump, whose Christianity Francis once questioned for his anti-immigrant policies, ushered in a populist era that helped sideline Francis.

Now Mr. Biden, a Catholic who rarely misses Sunday Mass, arrives at a moment when the political polarization in America has seeped deeply into its Catholic church. The president and pope, who share common ground on many issues, have become common targets of powerful conservative American bishops seeking to undercut them.

The most hostile among them, appointed by Francis’ conservative predecessors, have either ignored or resisted the pope’s efforts to reorient the priorities of the church toward inclusion and social justice, and away from culture war issues like abortion and L.G.B.T.Q. rights.

...

Francis considers the politicization, and weaponization, of the eucharist disastrous for the church and its ability to remain above the secular fray. The Vatican has noted that Mr. Biden’s bishop, Cardinal Wilton Gregory of Washington, who was appointed by Francis, has said he will not deny the president communion.

Francis clearly has avid backers in the United States, especially among the bishops and cardinals he has appointed. But among American bishops, his appointees and allies are not a majority, and Vatican officials have worried that movement by a majority of Catholic bishops against a Catholic president and other top Catholic office holders in the United States could set a dangerous precedent.

They have amplified their critiques of both men through a conservative Catholic media constellation that is Trump-friendly. Despite a clear warning from the Vatican, they have pursued an effort to deny holy communion to Roman Catholic politicians supportive of abortion rights — including Mr. Biden.

ROME, Oct 31 (Reuters) - An emotional U.S. President Joe Biden, who has come away from his visit with papal backing in his conflict with conservative U.S. bishops, on Sunday praised Pope Francis for being "everything I learned about Catholicism."

Biden, the second Catholic president in U.S. history, choked up as he spoke about his late son Beau and his own feelings about the pope and Catholicism at a final news conference in Rome at the end of the G20 summit of leaders of the world's richest nations.

"This is a man who has great empathy. A man who understands that part of his Christianity is to reach out," Biden said. "He is a really, truly genuine decent man."

Conservative U.S. bishops want to deny Biden the right to receive communion, the central sacrament of the faith, because of Biden's support for abortion rights.

The same bishops, some of whom supported Biden's predecessor Donald Trump, have clashed with the pope on issues including climate change, the death penalty and nuclear weapons.

Biden has said he personally opposes abortion but, as an elected official, cannot impose his views on others.

"He is everything I learned about Catholicism from the time I was a kid going from grade school through high school," Biden said.

In an apparent reference to the pope's critics, Biden said "I have great respect for people who have other religious views but he's just a fine, decent, honorable man, and we keep in touch."

After he met the pope on Friday, Biden said the pontiff had told him he is a "good Catholic" who can receive the sacrament.

Biden did just that when he went to Mass the next evening at St. Patrick's, the English-language church of the American Catholic community in Rome.

Biden spoke in response to a reporter who asked how he felt about the pope's backing and whether it meant the communion debate should be put to rest.

He answered by heaping praise on the pope as someone "looking to establish peace and decency and honor, not just in the Catholic church but just generically."

U.S. bishops to weigh communion rules that could rebuke Biden over abortion

By Gabriella Borter

BALTIMORE, Md. (Reuters) - U.S. Roman Catholic bishops on Tuesday are expected to debate whether President Joe Biden's support for abortion rights should disqualify him from receiving communion, an issue that has deepened rifts in the church since the Democrat took office.

At their assembly in Baltimore, the bishops are scheduled to discuss a document clarifying the meaning of Holy Communion, a sacrament central to the faith. The bishops have been divided over how explicitly the document should define the eligibility of prominent Catholics like Biden to receive communion due to political stances that contradict church teaching.

The meeting runs through Thursday, and the document needs a yes vote from two-thirds of the conference to pass.

Some conservative bishops have argued the conference must rebuke politicians such as Biden who support abortion rights contrary to church teaching. That contingent has called for the document to set explicit standards of eligibility for receiving the sacrament.

Others have cautioned against weaponizing the Eucharist and withholding it as a means of punishing specific political stances.
