Kamala Harris isn't cut out to be VP. Her disastrous immigration trip just proved it

Opinion: Vice President Kamala Harris looks good on paper. But she's not good at politics. Her trip to talk immigration proved as bad as her presidential run.

First, Kamala Harris upset progressives

Observers in both parties were confused when nominee Biden chose his busing nemesis for vice president. Yes, Harris looks good on paper. But she’s not good at politics.

Her first foreign trip proved as bad as her presidential run.

Harris met Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei on Monday and offered a blunt speech to anyone considering migrating to the U.S. “I want to be clear to folks in the region who are thinking about making that dangerous trek to the United States-Mexico border,” she said. “Do not come. Do not come. I believe if you come to our border, you will be turned back.”

“This is about the Biden administration’s immigration policy writ large is not working,” according to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on MSNBC. “It’s wrong and it’s inhumane.”

Vice President Kamala Harris gives a joint statement with Guatemalan president Alejandro Giammattei after their binational meeting held at the Palace of Culture in Guatemala, City on June 7, 2021.

Giammattei previously criticized the White House’s handling of the issue. “I believe that in the first few weeks of the Biden administration, messages were confusing,” he said in April. “They were compassionate messages that were understood by people in our country, especially the coyotes, to tell families, ‘We’ll take the children.’ ”

These unaccompanied minors can easily “fall into the hands of cartels and prostitution networks,” he added.

More people turned against Harris following her Tuesday interview with NBC’s Lester Holt. When asked why she hasn’t visited the U.S.-Mexico border – an obvious question – she provided a sound bite that cast gloom over the whole trip.

“At some point, you know, we are going to the border,” Harris replied. “We’ve been to the border. So this whole, this whole, this whole thing about the border. We've been to the border. We've been to the border.”

Holt responded, “You haven't been to the border,” and she provided her signature awkward laugh.

“I, and I haven’t been to Europe. And I mean, I don’t – I don’t understand the point that you're making."

By the time she met with Mexico’s President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, she had reversed herself, promising to visit the border. At some point.

“Do I declare this trip a success? Yes, I do,” Harris humbly proclaimed. “It is success in terms of a pathway that is about progress. We have been successful in making progress.”

The White House disagrees with the vice president’s self-assessment.

We have the same problem in Australia.

.

There was a brief period when we repealed the White Australia Policy under our moderate left wing party and our moderate right wing party followed this up with the Prime Minister taking a very strong stand against the conservatives on both sides so we allowed refugee immigration from Vietnam etc.

.

Then came Phillip Ruddock. Since then both sides have caved to their conservatives and we have actively regressed. The biggest argument was the method of stopping people coming and the specific location of the offshore detention camps. Since Ruddock only one minister in charge of refugees on each side has made compassion part of the equation (Amanda Vanstone and Chris Bowen)

.

It is simple maths: There are more votes in being seen as stopping people coming than in compassion whether it is a mainstream left wing party or a mainstream right wing party. The rhetoric when not in government is always different from when they get back in. The issues remain in finding the balance between two unteniabe choices: Completely open borders does not work ever but especially in a pandemic and completely closed borders is inhumane and againt international and domestic laws or conventions.

Kamala Harris Rushes To Border After Trump Announces Visit

More than a week after former President Donald Trump announced he would visit the U.S.-Mexico border amid the migrant surge, Vice President Kamala Harris finally announced Wednesday she will make the trip. It has been 91 days since she was appointed to head up the White House’s border response.

Politico reported the vice president will be joined by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas as they travel to El Paso, Texas on Friday.

Harris visited Guatemala and Mexico earlier this month, as the White House attempts to address the supposed “root causes” of the border crisis while deflecting on domestic policy concerns and remedies. There were more than 180,000 border encounters in May, which is a 20-year high. Migrants have come in from more than 160 countries and 40,000 migrants came from places other than Mexico and Central America in May.

The vice president took close to three months to announce her visit while traveling abroad and being lambasted by Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei for not being on the “same side of the coin” as him.

Harris also puzzled both sides when she told NBC’s Lester Holt earlier this month that “We have been to the border” but when pressed that she has actually not been to the border, she noted, “I haven’t been to Europe.” Of course, Harris was not appointed to do anything in particular in Europe.

Before Harris announced her travel plans, Trump said he will accompany Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to the border on June 30. “We went from having border security that was the envy of the world to a lawless border that is now pitied around the world,” Trump said in a statement.

James Carafano, a national security expert at The Heritage Foundation, told The Federalist the vice president’s visit does not compensate for a failed White House border response.

“There’s just no way that this is anything but a nothing burger,” Carafano said. “I don’t think this is a rebranding exercise and I don’t think it’s a shift in policy. I think this is the ultimate definition of the words ‘damage control.'”

The border is shifting from a manufactured crisis to a national embarrassment

Protecting national sovereignty and upholding the rule of law along our borders should not be a controversial issue, especially as we continue facing economic and public health crises. Yet, the Biden administration continues to lead the assault on our law and values. In doing so, the current border security situation is shifting from a manufactured crisis to a national embarrassment.

Week after week, the Biden administration proposes or pursues policies that are only making the crisis at the border more dire. Recent reporting indicates that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has released more than 50...immigrants into the U.S. without issuing a formal notice to appear. They are so overwhelmed with the number of aliens crossing the border that they simply do not have the time to issue a court date. Instead, illegal aliens are asked to voluntarily show up at a local DHS/Immigration and Customs Enforcement office. Thus far, only 13 percent have shown up, which is no surprise. This administration is destroying the rule of law along our southwest border.

We are also hearing from administration officials that they are seriously considering removing Title 42 authority, which would increase the number of illegal immigrants in DHS custody and would likely cause another surge to the border. But their latest move is even more radical - congressional Democrats, with support from a Biden White House, are looking to insert amnesty for millions of i...immigrants into a budget bill with little consent from the American people. This is a flagrant act of federal overreach and absolutely the wrong course to take.

Securing the border must be priority No. 1, and effective policies must be deployed. This is exactly the approach we took in 2019-2020 when I was leading DHS, and it worked. Other parts of a border strategy are rendered ineffective unless the rule of law is enforced. There is little reason to talk about root causes, in-country programs like the Central American Minors Program, and other initiatives if the border is effectively open. Additionally, widespread amnesty for the millions of illegal immigrants currently in the U.S. makes little sense if we want to have a secure border. Rewarding bad behavior simply encourages more of it. This is basic logic. Just the mere talk of such an ill-conceived policy is causing an uptick in illegal border apprehension numbers. U.S. Border Patrol in the Rio Grande Valley is reporting "skyrocketing" illegal apprehensions, with more than 20,000 occurring last week alone.

The Biden border strategy (or lack thereof) is vastly unpopular with the American people because they understand basic logic, fairness, and the rule of law. It is also unpopular with the thousands of law enforcement officers at DHS who are being directed to ignore the law. Thus far, the Biden White House has threatened to transfer or asked for the resignations from two senior officials at Customs and Border Protection - including the U.S. Border Patrol Chief - because they dared to speak out against or question the illogical decisions being implemented. These are not political appointees. These are career law enforcement officers who could no longer ignore the reality of the Biden administration's dangerous decisions.

But the illogical actions continue. This administration continues to implement tr...the border. If you want to cross the border legally at a port of entry, you are denied. If you choose to break the law and enter the country illegally, however, the Biden administration's current policy will allow you to stay in the country.
