UK Judge says Jullian Assange cannot be extradicted to US because of our awful prison system. Huge victory for press freedom, and that judge admits how evil our prisons are:

They did this because they assume Trump will pardon him... but now they will wait and do it that joe takes over. If you do not defended some speech you abhor then you do NOT support free speech.

It is an interesting ruling for a number of reasons: . The judge accepted the argument that the US charges fell outside of the realm of journalism. If proven, Assange agreed to assist Manning to crack passwords and to leak more files. That the release of unredacted cables was indiscriminate. . These were my concerns about the argument that this is an attack on journalistic freedom. All journalists already knew that they need to make sure that they are on the right side of law when the information they are reporting has come from leaked or stolen material - the journalist must make sure that they are not the source or an accomplice. To be a publisher of journalistic material it would normally be expected that you do more than just provide a place for dumps of leaked documents. . While this does not help Assange or journalists by providing a clear court decision on where the border between investigative journalism and criminal activity lies, it does allow for the focus to be brought back to the whistleblowers. This is the critical area. We need to provide better protection for whistleblowers where the crimes that are disclosed are more important than what the whistleblower did. This should not absolve whistleblowers of all crimes but the systems world wide favour those hiding their crimes more than those disclosing them. [Edited 1/4/21 15:30pm]
