It is sign that the world is improving if people from round the world have a more even chance of wealth but these measures are not a good indicator of this.

Within the last 3 decades of my life, I have seen products that were either "Made In China" or "Imported From China", hence why I said China already had the trade war won right from the jump.

Yes, China has definitely gotten better at capitalism than the USA in recent years. But do not be fool by the smokescreen! China is still a communist country that still thinks people with freedom & liberties are a bad thing.

I think the national response matters. Will companies pull the plug and move their operations to China in larger droves? That impacts the employment of millions. The weakened dollar will impact what it buys. Do prices have steeper spikes? I mean unless one lives isolated in the mountains somewhere living solely off the land then one stands to be impacted one way or another. Change is hard. I'm assuming there will be some.

The change has already occurred. So much of US manufacturing has moved out the US to China. GM, once the largest car manufacturer, sold out of Europe, shutdown all right hand drive manufacturing in Thailand, Australia and for Africa as well as breaking all ties with Japanese car companies to focus on China and the USA.

The businesses and economies of the world flex all the time far faster than any national response. Any national response that is merely about position in the league table will fail. It must look at how the economy is performing for all of the country's people and environment.

The interesting change will be the response to Covid19. So many businesses have been greatly affected by their supply chain being too reliant on China. This could result in them seeking more diversification of sources to the detriment of China.

Whether it's covid or political or financial, there are many reason companies want/need diversification. Trump's China trade war certainly made the biggest players think twice about having all their eggs in one basket.

Automation is expensive and very difficult, but for some industries that may aslo play a role in moving production closer to home too.

Why do we do that? Who cares if some country beats us? What does that even mean? Competition is not a good ethic.
