Today's P.C. police have taken on a public mantle, and political correctness has taken on a new persona. These passionate people claim to represent the social conscience of our times, but are they taking things too far?

In this post, we'll explore the rise of the social justice warrior, and whether they are hurting the causes that they claim to support.

The Birth of Modern Social Justice Warriors

The term "social justice warrior" was first coined in 2015. There have always been people willing to fight injustice within a society, though.

Slavery ended thanks to activists. The civil rights movement is another pertinent example. More recently, the LBQT and transgender campaigns for equal rights have topped the agenda.

Social justice warriors may only have taken on the title recently, but these types of people have embraced the same principles for equality for millennia. The modern movement has embraced the concept of #SocJus—the shareable idea that nobody in society should feel marginalized.

SJWs (social justice warriors) are outspoken, ensuring that no rights are trampled for the voiceless minorities. The conflict arises where others feel that these types of comments have obliterated the right to free speech entirely.

Are Today's Fighters Taking Things A Little Too Far?

Opponents claim that SJWs, in their rush for equality, are at risk of marginalizing those that they see as privileged. They have taken things too far.

An SJW's purpose today is to shine a light on injustice. With the #MeToo movement of 2017, it exposed the battles women face in a male-dominated society. The movement was a timely message, but some believe it was diluted by the actions of a few SJWs.

Pictures of men with their legs spread out on subways were shown as evidence of men dominating woman. The action is inconsiderate, but is it anti-feminist?

A more recent development on the social justice front is the #BlackLivesMatter movement. SJWs have blasted those who raised the issue of black-on-black violence as racially insensitive, for example.

Black-on-black violence isn't the reason behind the BLM movement. Rather, the fight focusses on systemic (and institutional) racism that allowed a white police officer to use excessive force against George Floyd and feel justified by his actions in the moment.

Still, we have to ask ourselves, "Does a black murder only matter if it's a white person committing the crime?" Some even argue that institutional racism is a primary cause of black-on-black violence.

By making it politically incorrect to discuss the issue, SJWs could be ignoring one of the symptoms of the systemic racism they are trying to oust....

Cancel culture is nothing new except in name. And it has nothing to do with left or right.

Back in the 1990s the term SJW existed but not as far-right method of shutting down free speech by attacking people for criticising them from the safety of their "lounge chairs". It was a positive term for people struggling to get social justice for others.

Thankfully we only have SJWs on PM&M (or should that be COWs - Correcting Opinions Warriors): It means the attacks on people for not disliking the right things about Prince are only addressed from the "lounge chair" and not in person.

Well it's all nonsense anyway, all the free speech warriors in here talking about the freedom to offend while it is literally against the rules to be uncivil, god forbid those mods get offended

In one of her self-published zines, Tobi Vail -- a central figure in the '90s Riot Grrrl movement -- wrote: "I feel completely left out of the realm of everything that is so important to me. And I know this is partly because punk rock is for and by boys."

It's a sentiment that many women may recognise in gaming today: a multi-billion dollar, male-dominated industry in which vast corporations like Tencent, Ubisoft, EA, and a handful of others set the tone.

The Riot Grrrl movement was unapologetically feminist and effected lasting change in music culture. But the new brand of punk feminism it helped create has spread beyond music, and is now establishing roots in the games industry with studios like Story Juice.

"GamerGate and its toxic misogyny tells us there's a problem in the industry," says Dr Hannah Wood, founder of the Plymouth-based micro-studio. "Culturally we know there are problems with pay equality, care responsibilities, parental leave inequality, emotional labour, sexual harassment, the fact women are called bossy and not men, the glass ceiling where you don't have women in management roles...

"The representation of gender roles in the stories we tell is vital to our futures. It helps us to dream of what we can be"

A former journalist, Wood did her PhD on storytelling in games and immersive theatre after becoming interested in the possibilities of digital storytelling. She now teaches part-time at Plymouth University, and runs Story Juice with the other half of her time doing client work in games and theatre, for example as Lead Writer on a current Audience of the Future project. Wood's ambition for Story Juice has grown over the last two years, becoming "invested in changing the narrative for women and diverse genders in games" with its two titles: The Glass Ceiling Games and Underland.

The games industry remains behind other creative industries in terms of gender equality, with women making up only 21% of the workforce, 11% in creative roles and fewer still in creative leadership positions. But Wood also notes that it's "also behind in content terms."
