I used to live in Berkeley, CA. All I can say is the experience was often disturbing.
My daughter was high-achieving and wanted to enroll in the International Baccalaureate program @ the High School.
Instead, she was placed in one of the special (actually remedial) programs with a fancy name as the vice principal told her
she the ability to "advocate" for herself and that she was "privileged" and needed to help others. (she was 14)
In this program, she would not have had access to the classes she needed to go to a decent college.
They were basing their assessment of privilege based on my sister's zip code. (We had used my sister's address as our high school was plagued with gang violence)
We stayed there all day fighting with them and they finally relented.
There was so much strangeness in that town. At one time, one of the Berk. intelligentsia wanted
to limit the profit a person could take from a home-sale. (It was discovered this person was supported by a trust fund)This idea was shelved quickly as there was an outcry from blacks as home ownership was their main source of wealth.
At the high school, labs for physics, chemistry and biology were cancelled as they were considered
programs for the "privileged."
The school forbade the International Bac final test as "it was too stressful" for "kids"
I understand that many of the liberal tenets started with care and goodwill, but something darker is going on now. I have mentioned before I have seen the creep into NPR's content, the NYTimes and now into the WSJ (newsroom).
I could go on, but what I am trying to communicate is that any type of dogma is harmful, including liberal dogma. We, as Americans, tend to be under-educated and complacent and as such are easily swayed.
What is going on with media manipulation is of grave concern to me.
