The world I was raised in (Part 2)- the murder of Yusuf Hawkins by a White mob

Here's a link to a new HBO documentary about the murder of black youth Yusef Hawkins by a gang of white racist Italians (and one very confused Negro) in Brooklyn. This story was dynamite in NYC at the time...you felt like the city was about to explode. I remember this like it was yesterday.

(note to 2E- I'm sure you remembert this as well ). Where I grew up, things like this happened all the time, thankfully rarely leading to actual murder, as it did here.

Interesting sidenote : After this aired recently on HBO, the staff of Hot-97, New York's top rated hip hop radio station, discovered that one of their long time staff producers , Paddy Duke, was part of the Italian gang that murdered Hawkins. He personally was not charged with the murder, but received a suspended sentence for "menacing"- essentially threatening the Black teenagers with a bat. Hot 97 fired Duke a couple of days after this revelation .

I was shocked when I saw that article about Paddy Duke. You just never know who you’re working next to. Wow.

Interestingly, this incident occurred a few weeks after “DTRT” opened in theaters... and many (White) commentators said that film would be inspiring violence by Black youths. But here was an incident of racist Italians murdering a Black kid. Spike Lee dedicated “Jungle Fever” to Yusuf Hawkins.

I grew up in Brooklyn at this time, an incidents like this were not uncommon, though most didn’t lead to death
