As Coronavirus Infections Rise, Masks In Paris Become Mandatory In All Public Places

The French government announced Thursday that face masks will become mandatory everywhere in Paris and its suburbs, including all outdoor public spaces. The heightened mask requirement comes as the number of new COVID-19 cases in France jumped to more than 5,000 in the previous 24 hours — the highest increase since the country came out of lockdown in mid-May.

The order goes into effect at 8 a.m. Friday. The Paris region is one of 21 high-risk "red zones" in France. But until now, masks were largely mandatory only inside shops and on public transportation. People were not required to wear them outdoors, except at street markets and in certain densely packed areas. The new rule means that now cyclists and scooter users will have to mask up as well.

Prime Minister Jean Castex, speaking at a press conference Thursday morning, said France had reached a critical threshold of 50 infections per 100,000 residents, a red line.

"We are in a period of epidemic growth," said Castex. "We want to do everything to avoid a new lockdown."

Coronavirus update: US confirms first COVID reinfection as China shows vaccine progress

Anjalee Khemlani
·Senior Reporter
August 28, 2020, 9:55 AM PDT

The potential for recovered COVID-19 patients to become reinfected has created a new and worrisome wrinkle, as a confirmed case in Nevada revealed on Friday converged with fears from an isolated instance in Hong Kong.

The Nevada man first confirmed positive for the virus in April, and was confirmed again 48 days later in June. Some experts have said that patients can remain positive for months, even without symptoms and post-recovery. However, the latest developments suggest that even those who recover aren’t protected by antibodies indefinitely.

Researchers confirmed the Nevada reinfection, because the genetic data in the two positive results were different. The case is amplifying concerns about a coming second wave in the fall and winter — set to collide with the annual flu season.

The global pandemic has reached nearly 24.5 million cases and killed more than 832,000. The U.S., India and Brazil top the charts with millions of cases, while Russia is nearing a million cases. Domestic cases are closing in on nearly 6 million, and more than 180,000 are dead.

BREAKING NEWS

Two P.R. advisers at the ... Covid-19.

Friday, August 28, 2020 12:14 PM EST

The F.D.A. commissioner, Dr. Stephen Hahn, removed Emily Miller as the agency’s chief spokeswoman. The White House had installed her in the post just 11 days earlier. Ms. Miller had previously worked in communications for the re-election campaign of Senator Ted Cruz and as a journalist for the conservative cable network One America News.

Ms. Miller’s termination comes one day after the F.D.A.’s parent agency, the Department of Health and Human Services, terminated the contract of another public relations consultant, Wayne Pines, who had advised Dr. Hahn to apologize for misleading comments about the benefits of blood plasma for Covid-19.

3. Coronavirus cases are increasing at a faster rate among children.

As some U.S. school districts begin in-person classes, data compiled by the American Academy of Pediatrics show that the numbers of cases, hospitalizations and deaths are increasing at a faster rate among children and teenagers than in the general population.

The increase comes in part from more widespread testing, but an increase in hospitalizations and deaths among children show that the rise is not just on paper.

And like adults, Black and Latino children who contract the virus are more likely to be hospitalized. Above, students waiting for temperature checks today at Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Fla.

Cheap, widely available s...treatment.

Wednesday, September 2, 2020 10:08 AM EST

Steroids like dexamethasone, hydrocortisone and methylprednisolone are often used by doctors to tamp down the body’s immune system, alleviating inflammation, swelling and pain.

Many Covid-19 patients die not of the virus, but of the body’s overreaction to the infection.

^ My nephew's wife, niece-in-law I guess, has lupus which an autoimmune disease and when she has an attack she is treated with steriods, so it makes sense.

Exclusive: Two-thirds of Americans say they won't get COVID-19 vaccine when it's first available, USA TODAY/ Suffolk Poll shows

https://www.usatoday.com/...96982002/

Two-thirds of U.S. voters say they won't try to get a coronavirus vaccine as soon as it becomes available and one in four say they don't want to get it ever, according to a new USA TODAY/Suffolk poll released the same week that the number of COVID-19 cases surpassed 6 million.

“I don’t plan on being anyone’s guinea pig,” Ebony Dew, an independent from Capitol Heights, Maryland, said. “I don’t plan on getting it at all.”

More:As Americans await a COVID-19 vaccine, health officials worry the US isn't ready for one

The 40-year-old access control specialist questions the safety of a potential vaccine, echoing concerns shared by millions of Americans.

“I feel like their testing is a trial and error," Dew said. "And I also feel that they don’t really know all that much about this virus, so how can they create a cure for it just yet?”

Marks? Where is he getting this information? It shows again his obsession with "ratings." And... it's not true.

All he is dong is stroking general fear and distrust. There is a poll in the U.S. and 2/3 of those polled said they would not get a vaccine that was produced too quickly due to political pressure - in other words, they would not get the vaccine produced in the first round. The public confidence is low.

However, getting the flu vaccine is more important than ever this year.

Researchers: Sturgis Motorcycle Rally a 'superspreader event' linked to 267K COVID-19 cases

The Sturgis motorcycle rally in South Dakota should be linked to 266,796 of COVID-19 cases reported nationwide between Aug. 2 and Sept. 2, the researchers said, and should be considered a virus superspreader event, or a situation where a smaller number of people spread the disease to a much larger population.

President Trump admitted ...deadly.”

Wednesday, September 9, 2020 12:45 PM EST

“This is deadly stuff,” Mr. Trump told Mr. Woodward on Feb. 7 in one of a series of interviews he conducted with the president for his upcoming book, “Rage.”

“You just breathe the air and that’s how it’s passed,” Mr. Trump said. “And so that’s a very tricky one. That’s a very delicate one. It’s also more deadly than even your strenuous flu.”

That was a vastly different story than what Mr. Trump was telling the public.

Wednesday, September 9, 2020 3:11 PM EST

Brian Murphy, the former head of the intelligence branch of the Homeland Security Department, said in a whistle-blower complaint filed on Tuesday that he was directed by Chad F. Wolf, the acting secretary of the department, to stop producing assessments on Russian interference.

The department’s second highest ranked official, Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II, also ordered him to modify intelligence assessments to make the threat of white supremacy “appear less severe” and include information on violent “left-wing” groups, according to the complaint, which was released Wednesday by the House Intelligence Committee.

“Fauci: "It is truly a waste of time to have to debunk nonsense"]/b]
From CNN's Amanda Watts

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, said he is bothered when he has to debunk nonsense.

“The one thing that bothers me is the amount of things that aren't evidence-based. And we've seen examples of that in the United States — like claims that certain drugs have a great, positive effect, when there's no scientific evidence whatsoever that they have a positive effect. And yet it gets ingrained, and I and my colleagues have to spend a lot of time trying to debunk that,” he said during a Friday webinar with the Friends of the Global Fight.

“[b]And you're in the middle of a pandemic and you're trying hard to address all the appropriate issues, it is truly a waste of time to have to debunk nonsense. But you know, unfortunately, we've had to do that,” he said.

Face masks may be inadvertently giving people Covid-19 immunity and making them get less sick from the virus, academics have suggested in one of the most respected medical journals in the world.

The commentary, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, advances the unproven but
promising theory that universal face mask wearing might be helping to reduce the severity of the virus and ensuring that a greater proportion of new infections are asymptomatic.

If this hypothesis is borne out, the academics argue, then universal mask-wearing could become a form of variolation (inoculation) that would generate immunity and “thereby slow the spread of the virus in the United States and elsewhere” as the world awaits a vaccine.

College students admitted to police they had COVID-19. They threw a house party anyway.

More than 1,100 students at Miami University in Ohio have tested positive for coronavirus since mid-August. But even after testing positive, a group of students was caught on camera hosting a large house party over Labor Day weekend, breaking quarantine rules.

An officer with the Oxford Police Department arrived to break up a house party over the weekend that violated capacity rules, which currently allow gatherings of no more than 10 people. When police arrived at the house, several students were sitting on the porch, unmasked, drinking and listening to music.

Despite allowing 20 people inside the house, the hosts of the party maintained they were following guidelines. According to the officer's body-camera footage, he warned the students that they were violating safety guidelines before running one student's license.

Vaccine Makers Keep Safety Details Quiet, Alarming Scientists

Researchers say drug companies need to be more open about how vaccine trials are run to reassure Americans who are skittish about getting a coronavirus vaccine.

The morning after the world learned that a closely watched clinical trial of a coronavirus vaccine had been halted last week over safety concerns, the company’s chief executive disclosed that a person given the vaccine had experienced serious neurological symptoms.

But the remarks weren’t public. Instead, the chief executive, Pascal Soriot of AstraZeneca, spoke at a closed meeting organized by J.P. Morgan, the investment bank.

AstraZeneca said on Saturday that an outside panel had cleared its trial in Britain to begin again, but the company still has not given any details about the patient’s medical condition, nor has it released a transcript of Mr. Soriot’s remarks to investors, which were reported by the news outlet STAT and later confirmed by an analyst for J.P. Morgan.

Another front-runner in the vaccine race, Pfizer, made a similarly terse announcement on Saturday: The company is proposing to expand its clinical trial to include thousands more participants, but it gave few other details about its plan, including how it would determine the effectiveness of the vaccine in its larger study.

It’s standard for drug companies to withhold details of clinical trials until after they are completed, tenaciously guarding their intellectual property and competitive edge. But these are extraordinary times, and now there is a growing outcry among independent scientists and public health experts who are pushing the companies to be far more open with the public in the midst of a pandemic that has already killed more than 193,000 people in the United States.

These experts say American taxpayers are entitled to know more since the federal government has committed billions of dollars to vaccine research and to buying the vaccines once they’re approved. And greater transparency could also help bolster faltering public confidence in vaccines at a time when a growing number of Americans fear President Trump will pressure federal regulators to approve a vaccine before it is proved safe and effective.

“Trust is in short supply,” said Dr. Harlan Krumholz, a cardiologist and health care researcher at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., who has spent years prodding companies and academic researchers to share more trial data with outside scientists. “And the more that they can share, the better off we are.”
