Summertime violence victims

Summertime is always a time I partially dread, (I'm an Autumn in New York kinda guy) with COVID19 high alert stress, summertime is a time we always seem to see more violence. Just in this thread, I'd like to acknowledge people who have lost their lives to gun violence(domestic). Gun violence is still an issue (as well as violence by other weapons). Why the summer/hotter months?

.

Not looking for battles already fough in P&R to happen. Not looking for political flame wars. Just an acknowledgement of those who will no longer see another summer. If you post something, post art or something from your country/state-region/city

.

1-year-old killed at New York City cookout shooting, three injured

Jordan Culver, USA TODAY 1 hr ago

http://www.msn.com/en-us/...ocid=ientp

The child, identified by police as Davell Gardner, was shot in the abdomen and taken the hospital police told USA TODAY. He was then taken to a second hospital, where he died.

Two men – one wearing all black, the other wearing black and white – opened fire at the Brooklyn cookout at around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to police. Both men had their faces covered and left the scene on foot.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Four people were injured in the shooting, including Davell according to the NYPD. A 36-year-old man was shot in the leg, a 35-year-old man was shot in the groin and a 27-year-old man, who walked to the hospital, was shot in the ankle.

NYPD Chief of Community Affairs Jeffrey Maddrey called on the police and the community to denounce the "disgusting" violence that took place Sunday.

"The baby was with his family enjoying a Sunday night in the summer when someone started shooting," Maddrey tweeted Monday morning. "Three people were injured, and the baby was killed. This. Must. STOP!"

Commissioner Dermot Shea called the shooting "senseless." A police official confirmed to USA TODAY the shooting wasn't random.

City Mayor Bill de Blasio addressed the shooting during a Monday media briefing. He said the incident was "horrifying" and added he was "heartbroken" over the death of Davell. He also mentioned a separate incident where a 12-year-old was shot in the leg.

"It's not something we can ever look away from," he said. "It's something we have to address and stop."

Sunday was a particularly violent day for New York City, and two other minors, one 12 years old, the other 15 years old, were injured in separate shootings, according to the NYPD. The New York Times reported as of Sunday, there were 634 shootings in 2020 this year, up from 394 in 2019.

"This city is strong," de Blasio said Monday. "We fought back through a lot before, we're going to fight back again. Remember this is a day where we can't celebrate, but we note that this city fought back from being the epicenter of the coronavirus crisis, to having a 24-hour period with no deaths at all. This city has fought back from crime and violence many times before."

Sunday afternoon, hours before the shooting, Maddrey tweeted photos from a community meeting in Harlem. Monday, de Blasio called the event "inspiring."

"Cops and community joining together to demand a stop to the recent spike in violence," Maddrey tweeted. "Last night we met in Harlem, neighborhood leaders, and elected officials setting aside our differences for a bigger picture of PEACE."

This does not only happen in the US. In Toronto, the gang/gun violence increases significantly in the warmer months. I can't comment on the US as guns are legal, but in Canada they aren't and I believe that anyone arrested carrying, using, firing or whatever else one can do with a gun should go to jail for a very long time. Our laws are weak, so they're in and out in months or a few short years and usually right back at it again. mad

Thanks for shedding light on Toronto CA(which is like my 3rd home)
.

There are certain states like my own New York whose new rushed bail reform law is so pathetic. A person can rob a store, and be out on the street again to do it all over again after being processed.

California teen survives 30 hours lost in the woods after his dad was shot while asking for directions

When Paige Gershman received text messages from her son Jack on Friday, she said she thought he was sending her videos of scenery from a camping trip with his dad in California's Tahoe National Forest. But the teen was reaching out with a far more harrowing message: Jack said his father, Dr. Ari Gershman, had been shot and killed by a gunman.

"I said, 'Where's Dad?' And he's like, 'He's been shot.' And I said, 'What do you — what do you even mean?'" Paige told CBS News.

Jack said his dad was shot by a man who they had asked for directions near Downieville, about two hours north of Sacramento.

"My dad suggested that we ask him for directions," Jack recalled to CBS News. "The shooter pulls out a pistol and starts shooting ... and then, after two or three shots, he was hit."

The 15-year-old said he bolted from the car and took off into the surrounding woods near the "Poker Flat" area of Sierra County. He said he got lost and when he was finally able to call his mom, he barely had reception and his phone was running out of battery.

"When my phone died, I had really nothing to do, so I prayed," he said.

Local authorities said it was more than 30 hours before, with the help of a K-9 tracking unit, they were able to locate Jack and reunite him with his family.

"We all just screamed and hugged and cried," Paige said. "It was that relief, and we knew that he was okay, but then it was the reality that Ari was not."

Later that day, law enforcement officers detained the suspected gunman, 40-year-old John Thomas Conway. The Sierra County Sheriff's office said he's suspected of shooting and wounding two other people in a separate attack. The motive for both shootings was still unknown on Thursday.

"I just hope he spends the rest of his miserable life in jail," Jack said.

Dr. Gershman's family is remembering a man they call "humble," "smart" and "generous."

"He was all about helping others, and just so funny and kind," Paige said. "He's just my best friend."

Paige said police are going to ask Jack to look at a lineup on Thursday.

She's now a single mother not just to him, but to her 16-year-old son, Evan, and 10-year-old daughter, Maci. She's also undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.

A GoFundMe page to support the family has raised more than $430,000, as of Thursday morning.

13 Injured in Central Illinois Shooting

BBmJzre.img?h=24&w=24&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f&f=png13 Injured in Central Illinois Shooting

A total of 13 people were shot and injured in a shooting at a gathering on the Peoria, Ill., waterfront on early Sunday morning, police say.

About 200 people had gathered along Northeast Water Street when shots rang out shortly before 4:42 a.m., Lt. Jared Ginglen, shift commander for the Peoria Police Department, tells TIME. Two people were shot in the neck and seriously injured, and various others were shot in the arms and legs. All of the injured people are expected to survive, Ginglen said.

Police believe that there were several shooters, given the number of shell casings found by investigators.

The area is a typical gathering place in the community, and the crowd is not believed to have gathered for a particular event, Ginglen said. The street runs along the Illinois River.

No suspects have been arrested yet, although police are investigating at least one person of interest.

New Jersey federal judge's son killed, husband critical after being shot at home
Tim Stelloh 3 hrs ago

The son of U.S. District Judge Esther Salas was killed Sunday and her husband was in critical condition after they were shot at their home in New Jersey, senior law enforcement officials told NBC New York.

The shooting occurred in North Brunswick Township early in the evening, the FBI said in a statement, adding that it was searching for one suspect.

NBC New York reported that Salas' husband, criminal defense lawyer Mark Anderl, answered the door and is believed to have been shot multiple times. Their 20-year-old son was also shot when he came running to the door, the station reported.Federal Judge Esther Salas.Rutgers Law School.

U.S. Chief District Judge Freda Wolfson identified their son as Daniel, the Associated Press reported.

Salas, a former federal public defender who was nominated by President Barack Obama in January 2011 and confirmed that June, is a judge in U.S. District Court in Newark.

In a statement Sunday, Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., said that he knows Salas and her husband well and that he was proud to have recommended her nomination to Obama.

"My prayers are with Judge Salas and her family, and that those responsible for this horrendous act are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice," he said.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said the shooting should serve as a reminder that gun violence is still a crisis and "that our work to make every community safer isn't done."

Salas presided over the trial of former "Real Housewives of New Jersey" star Teresa Giudice and other high-profile cases.

More recently, Salas was appointed to preside over a lawsuit brought by Deutsche Bank investors, the Associated Press reported. The plaintiffs claim the company made false and misleading statements about its anti-money laundering policies and didn't monitor accused child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.

Earlier this month, New York regulators fined the bank $150 million for its "significant compliance failures."

'She was a baby': Family of 16-year-old girl shot, killed at Westside Wawa holds vigil
First Coast News 2 hrs ago

.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — UPDATE: Police make arrest in murder of 16-year-old girl at Jacksonville Wawa

Family and friends of Teneria McClendon gathered outside the Wawa on Wilson Boulevard on the Westside Sunday night to hold a vigil for the 16-year-old. She was shot and killed Saturday night outside the convenience store.

"She was a good girl," McClendon's great-aunt, Donna Ghent, said. "She was in advanced classes at school. She didn't bother anybody. She wanted to be a nurse. This is a senseless death. She was a baby."

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, the shooting happened after an argument inside the store that escalated in the parking lot. McClendon's family, however, said that's not what happened.

Family members said McClendon and three of her cousins were in the car waiting for her mom who was inside paying. They said the woman who shot McClendon pulled up in her car and almost hit them. Family members said they told the woman she almost hit them and the woman jumped out of the car and yelled at them.

"She's gone. My niece lost her child because somebody got a gun," Ghent said.

According to the family, McClendon's mother, who's pregnant, came out and told them to talk to her, not McClendon. The family said the woman tried to fight McClendon's mother, the teen stood up for her mom and the woman shot the 16-year-old.

"(Teneria McClendon) had a sense of humor," one of McClendon's cousins said. "She liked to laugh and play. She loved lashes and hair. She loved doing hair, period. We're just asking for your prayers and all of the support we can get."

JSO said they're not looking for suspects and everyone involved has been detained, but police haven't announced any arrests.

Pregnant Kansas City Woman Pushing 1-Year-Old Baby in a Stroller Is Shot and Killed

Gabrielle Chung 18 hrs ago

.

A Kansas City woman is dead after she was fatally shot while pushing a 1-year-old baby in a stroller.

.

Diamon Eichelburger, 20, was found unresponsive on the ground of a 7-Eleven parking lot on Monday morning when officers responded to a call of shooting at the 2700 block of Van Brunt Boulevard, according to a report from the Kansas City Police Department obtained by PEOPLE.

Witnesses told officers that an unknown vehicle drove up and shot Eichelburger while she was pushing the infant in a stroller.

Eichelburger suffered apparent gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Though the baby did not appear to suffer any injuries, she was taken to a nearby hospital for as examination. The Kansas City Police Department said in an update on Tuesday that the child was "not physically harmed" in the incident.

Eichelburger was 4-months pregnant when she was killed, according to a GoFundMe campaign set up in support of her family. The page also said that the child in the stroller was Eichelburger's daughter.

Representatives for the Kansas City Police Department and the Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office could not confirm to PEOPLE if Eichelburger was pregnant when she died, citing an open investigation. A police spokesperson also could not confirm if Eichelburger was related to the baby in the stroller.

"Please help us support Diamon's 1yr old daughter Belle that was left behind after her mother who was 4mo's pregnant was tragically murdered while strolling Belle down the street," a description on the GoFundMe page read. "She was headed to take Belle to the hospital when she shot to death."

The fatal shooting was the 106th homicide in Kansas City this year, according to authorities.

2 men face murder charges after fatal shootout during deal for gun, marijuana at east Oak Cliff park

Two men have been arrested after a gun and drug sale left a third man dead last week in east Oak Cliff, authorities say.

Gerardo Aguilar and Oscar Urbina, both 21, were booked into the Dallas County jail Friday night. Each man faces one count of murder in the shooting death of LanDre Rogers.

Rogers, 20, was shot multiple times in the parking lot of Moore Park, in the 2200 block of Rockefeller Boulevard, just after 4 p.m. July 13. Authorities arrived minutes later and Rogers was taken to Methodist Dallas Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Three witnesses who went to the park with Rogers — including one who also was shot — gave police "conflicting statements" about the incident, a detective wrote in an arrest-warrant detective, but police determined that the victim had planned to buy a gun and 4 ounces of marijuana from the suspects that afternoon.

On Friday, attorneys for Aguilar and Urbina told police they'd bring in their clients for police interviews and turn over evidence in the case, the affidavit says.

According to the affidavit, Urbina admitted shooting Rogers once after a struggle because he thought they were being robbed. Aguilar said he fired two shots at Rogers while he was on the ground but didn't know whether he hit him, police said.

Police said both sides fired shots during the incident. Urbina realized he'd been struck after leaving the park, and Aguilar drove him to Parkland Memorial Hospital, the affidavit says.

Although the affidavit refers to attorneys for both suspects, it does not name them and they are not listed in court records for the men.

Aguilar and Urbina were released from custody after posting $15,000 bond each, court records show.

Murder of black Trump supporter Bernell Trammell spurs call for federal investigation

he shooting death of a black Trump supporter in Milwaukee has state Republicans calling for a federal investigation.

Bernell Trammell, 60, a dreadlocked activist known for carrying handmade signs through the streets reading “Vote Donald Trump 2020,” and posting them on his storefront, was gunned down by an unknown assailant on his sidewalk Thursday afternoon, police said.

“Because of Trammell’s well-known political activism and the possibility that his murder could be politically motivated, I respectfully request that United States Attorney Matthew Krueger open an investigation,” said Andrew Hitt, chairman of the Republican Party of Wisconsin, late Friday.

“No American should fear for their personal safety because of where they live or their political affiliation,” Hitt added.

Krueger’s spokesman, Kenneth Gales, said he could not comment on Hitt’s request.

Trammell was a familiar figure in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood, frequently pedaling a bicycle or walking the streets with signs proclaiming his eclectic religious or political thoughts.

“He had a lot of different views,” local writer Adebisi Agoro told The Post. “But it was his last view that made people be outrageous with him.”

The pro-Trump signage was stirring up angry posts on neighborhood Facebook pages, Agoro said. On Monday, a man followed Trammell around town holding a sign reading “Sike” — local slang for “not!” or “as if” — to counter it.

Trammell “didn’t have internet, he didn’t have a phone, he didn’t have a dime to his name,” Agoro said. “But he got his message out.”

A new GOP outreach office – opened this year to try to make inroads into the African-American electorate – is just blocks from the building where Trammell lived and was killed, Hitt said.

“This is personal,” he told The Post.

Hitt, a former Milwaukee prosecutor, turned to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin Friday, in the face of silence from the city’s police department.

“I know how these investigations work,” he said. “The lack of information is concerning. We don’t know any of the circumstances of how he was murdered.”

Police, who had no suspects in custody as of Friday, did not respond to requests for comment.

But the Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention was aware of at least one public dispute over Trammell’s Trump signs, the unit’s director, Reggie Moore, toldthe Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

“He’s a black elder who didn’t deserve to die the way that he did,” Moore said.

On Thursday, hours before Trammell’s death, Agoro filmed an interview with him about his support for Trump.

“I believe that Trump is the sign of the times,” Trammell said in the clip, adding that Trump’s respect for rapper Kanye West and former aide Omarosa Manigault Newman made him a worthy candidate.

“This is going to be a motivating factor for us as we organize in central Milwaukee and across Wisconsin,” Hitt said. “I think it will give folks in the black community who support the president’s message more resolve and more determination than ever.”

Ga. Woman Found Shot to Death After Allegedly Being Kidnapped by 4 People and Caught in Police Chase
Jeff Truesdell 2 hrs ago

A Georgia mother of two is dead after authorities say an early morning kidnapping led to a police chase -- and the arrest of four people for her alleged murder.

The body of Tameka Skinner, 39, was found late Monday morning in a wooded area of Russell County, Alabama, a few miles from where her stolen car was recovered earlier in the day, Sheriff Heath Taylor said at a news conference.

She had been shot. No motive for the violence was revealed.

"Right now, we are working on it," Taylor told the media, reports Columbus, Georgia, TV station WRBL. "We may have some ideas on what the motive is, but we are awaiting on evidence to determine what our motive is going to be."

Skinner was kidnapped around 1 a.m. Monday from an apartment complex in Columbus by a group of attackers who allegedly took her vehicle, reports the Associated Press.

Taylor said a male friend of Skinner's was also assaulted in the incident at the Hickory Hill apartments, but was left behind when the kidnappers allegedly fled with the woman.

Authorities were alerted to the possible discovery of the vehicle across the Alabama state line, he said. While Russell County deputies went looking for it, they observed a suspicious vehicle that took off when deputies tried to approach, initiating a chase.

"Once the vehicle reached Wetumpka, they wrecked, and all four individuals inside were taken into custody," said Taylor.

At the crash site, investigators also found a handgun they suspect was used in Skinner's murder, he said.

Authorities who located Skinner's car said it appeared that someone had tried to burn and then hide it.

Those arrested on charges of kidnapping and capital murder were Demetria Johnson, 30; Sean Johnson, 40; and Joshua Tolbert, 30, all of Columbus; and Javion Phillips, 33, of Seale, Alabama.

It could not be determined whether the four still were being held Tuesday or if a bond had been issued, nor whether any of the suspects had obtained an attorney. A call by PEOPLE to the sheriff's office was not immediately returned.

Skinner's uncle Robert Jones told WTVM that his niece, a mother of two daughters, was "a friendly person."

"Very joyful, humorous and caring, and God-fearing woman of God," he said.

The sheriff said after speaking with the family, "I promised our office would do everything we could do get justice for Tameka."

Chicago shooting: 15 injured in drive-by shooting at funeral for man killed in drive-by shooting

Fifteen people were shot in a drive-by shooting in Chicago on Tuesday at a funeral for a victim of another drive-by shooting, Chicago Police said.

Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said Wednesday that rival gang factions were repeating a cycle of violence and revenge.

"We can't keep meting out violence with violence," Brown said. "An eye for an eye makes us both blind. It's destroying our families and perpetuates this endless cycle of gunshot victims night after night."

Two of the people shot at the funeral are men "known to police," Chicago Police said. Both are in their 30s and are listed in serious condition, said CPD.

Of the injured, all of whom are adults, 14 were hospitalized. One person is in extremely critical condition and another is in critical condition, according to police. Police say the others who were injured in this shooting are expected to recover.

The oldest victim, a 65-year-old woman, was treated on scene and is in good condition, police said. There is a person of interest being questioned by police CPD said. The shooting is just the latest in a spate of gun violence in Chicago and in major cities across the United States in the past few months that coincide with the end of Covid-19-related lockdowns, mass protests against police violence and summertime, when crime annually increases.

Chicago violence connected to gangs, police chief says

On Monday in Chicago, 25 people were shot, and over the weekend, 63 were shot and at least 12 people were killed.

As of July 19, the latest date for which Chicago crime data is available, murders are up 51% in 2020 compared to the same point in 2019, increasing from 275 to 414. Shooting incidents are up 47%, jumping from 1,110 at this point in 2019 to 1,637 so far this year.

Gun violence has particularly increased in the past month. In the 28 days before July 19, there were 116 murders in Chicago, nearly triple during the same period in 2019, according to Chicago Police.

Despite the rise in gun violence, non-firearm related crimes have remained flat or decreased on the year. Overall, crime complaints are down 9% this year compared to last year, led by sharp declines in theft and criminal sexual assault, according to Chicago Police.

Brown, the police superintendent, said the violence Chicago has seen this year is tied to gangs and their conflicts externally and internally.

"This is about gangs, guns and drugs," Brown said. "Many of the retaliations, the murders, the initial murder, it likely is about some beef between a gang or another gang, external or internal, and or having to do with the drug market."

President Donald Trump said Monday he plans to send federal law enforcement to certain cities, including Chicago, "all run by very liberal Democrats," to try to crack down on the violence. A senior law enforcement official told CNN that there are plans to send federal agents to Chicago through the end of the summer. The agents will focus on illegal gun sales and gun violence and outstanding warrants, among other targets, according to a source.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the government could help by cracking down on illegal guns, but she warned against the type of involvement seen in Portland, Oregon, where federal law enforcement's presence and aggressive tactics have exacerbated protests.

Car used in shooting was stolen

Tuesday's mass shooting incident began at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when a black vehicle came speeding down the street and people in it opened fire at the funeral attendees, Chicago Police Department First Deputy Superintendent Eric Carter said Tuesday.

Some at the funeral began to fire back, he said. The vehicle then struck a parked car and came to a stop, and its occupants got out and fled, according to police.

Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said that the car used in the shooting was stolen and that the three occupants, including two suspected shooters, fled on foot. Officers have recovered at least 60 shell casings at the scene and are currently looking for more witnesses.

"This can't happen," Deenihan said as he urged witnesses to come forward. "You can't drive down the street and indiscriminately shoot in to a crowd of people and then flee the scene."

Brown said there were two squad cars at the scene for the funeral and a full tactical team in the area. He said the intelligence prior to the funeral showed that there was a gang connection to the shooting of the man who was being mourned, who was killed in a drive-by shooting.

The funeral was for a person who was shot due to a gang conflict, and his murder is related to a prior shooting, Deenihan said.

"This is an ongoing gang conflict where individuals are shooting at each other, and obviously those individuals then have no interest in cooperating with police," Deenihan said.

Chicago pastor organizes prayer walks after rise in violent deaths
Caleb Parke 7/22/2020

Chicago desperately needs the hope of Jesus Christ amid record numbers of violence and death, according to one pastor

On Tuesday, the nation's third-largest city saw its bloodiest mass shooting in modern history. Gunfire left 15 people wounded with no immediate arrests. Witness Arnita Gerder told Chicago's WMAQ-TV, she saw "bodies laying everywhere ... We thought it was a war out here."

GIULIANI, KERIK CRITICIZE CHICAGO MAYOR AFTER MASS SHOOTING

Several weeks ago, in response to the violence that has seen children, including a 1-year-old, being gunned down, Pastor Edgar Rodriguez of New City Fellowship started organizing evening prayer walks around affected neighborhoods in Chicago.

"The church has to rise up," Rodriguez told the Baptist Press. "This is the church's moment to stand up and lay down all other languages of networks and denominations and, as brothers and sisters adopted by the Father because of the good news we believe in, we have to come together and stand together."

On July 13, the pastor and two others started walking at 6 p.m. in Humboldt Park. They went to an area with a large homeless population to share hope and prayer with those who asked for help.

"We just really want God to invade certain parts of the city," Rodriguez said on Facebook Live this week. "We have to be proactive. We can't just be reactive. We're not going to wait until someone else dies, then say, 'we'll go out there.'"

Boy, 10, hides in bathroom as family is beaten to death with baseball bat:
Nelson Oliveira 3 hrs ago

Avoid These Common HVAC Mistakes

A 10-year-old Florida boy was unharmed after hiding in a bathroom while a burglar beat three members of his family with a baseball bat, killing two of them in a horrific home invasion Thursday night, authorities said.

The suspect, who drank bleach before his arrest and had to be hospitalized, brutally murdered homeowner John Savey and his son, James, and seriously injured Savey's wife, Lisa, after trying to steal a car that was parked outside the house, according to police.

The child rushed to the bathroom during the attack, locked himself inside and called 911, prompting a massive police response at the scene just moments later. The boy's exact relationship to the victims was not immediately clear, but cops said he lived there with his grandparents.

The killings happened around 11 p.m. in Windermere, a small town in the Orlando metro area.

It all started when suspect Ezekiel Emanuel Hopkins entered the victims' gated community and tried to steal their car, authorities told local news outlets Friday morning.

When the homeowners confronted the burglar, the cold-blooded killer grabbed a baseball bat and began beating John Savey outside, police said. Hopkins then went inside and beat Savey's son and wife, Windermere Police Chief David Ogden said.

John and James Savey were pronounced dead at the scene and Lisa Savey was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Their ages were have not been released.

The boy stayed on the phone with dispatchers as officers from the Wildereme Police Department, Orange County Sheriff's Office and other agencies headed to the home, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Hopkins was found unresponsive in another bathroom and was taken to the hospital for treatment, according to the paper. He will be charged with two counts of murder and one count of aggravated battery.
