today is the 50th anniversary of pride: so HAPPY LGBT PRIDE DAY!

sadly, i cant march, cause nyc wisely chose to cancel pride to keep the curve from rising in nyc.

today marks the 50th anniversary of the first pride march in which we chose to fight back against oppression, 1 year after the stonewall riots here in nyc.

HAPPY LGBT PRIDE!

thank you, only. happy pride to you as well, sir.

im not gonna lie, the urge to leave my apt today is stronger than it normally would be in lockdown.

it really really sucks to not be able to mark the fiftieth anniversary of them, because it means so much in terms of community, reform, and equality. its a milestone i never imagined, but i cant celebrate. im not about to risk bringing the nyc curve up.

so this thread and forum is the only way i can celebrate pride this year.

thank you for making it that much better. smile

Noice rainbow! Pride day is always the funnest. A few years ago I went to one and the live act was Martha Walsh. She sang It's Raining Men of course, booming through the park, so cool! Sylvester fan, so I had seen the Weather Girls before years ago. 51 years since Stonewall, damn.

https://www.cnn.com/style...index.html

Google is paying tribute to Marsha P. Johnson -- a pioneering figure in the country's LGBT rights movement -- on the last day of Pride month. The company announced its June 30 Google Doodle will be dedicated to the late activist who was at the center of New York's gay liberation movement for more than 20 years.

The doodle depicts Johnson in all her colorful, flower-in-hair, bright-red-lipstick glory.

A petition wants to replace a New Jersey city's Christopher Columbus statue with Black trans activist Marsha P. Johnson

The company said it chose June 30 to honor Johnson as it will be the first anniversary since she was posthumously honored as a grand marshal during WorldPride in New York.

"Thank you, Marsha P. Johnson, for inspiring people everywhere to stand up for the freedom to be themselves," Google wrote.

Google.org will also donate $500,000 to the Marsha P. Johnson Institute, the company said. The institute, which launched last year, will continue the work Johnson started, advocating for and organizing on behalf of the transgender community, its founder has previously told CNN.

"For so long, Marsha's history has only been heralded by the LGBTQ community," Elle Hearns, the founder and executive director of the institute, said in a statement.

"Today's Doodle will help teach her story to many more around the world, and about the work that has been historically ignored and often purposely left out of history books. Today's Doodle of Marsha reminds people that Black and LGBTQ+ history is bigger than just a month; it is something to be honored every single day."

"i think this is a brilliant idea. please take a moment to sign the petition, which is almost up to 150k" - CBorgman

For those inerested, the petition is on Change.org

Replace the statue of Christopher Colombus with a statue of Marsha P. Johnson

The appropriateness of celebrating Christopher Columbus is something that has become more popular discourse in recent years. Although it is widely taught that Columbus “discovered” the Americas, he could not have “discovered” land that was already occupied by indigenous groups. Many believe celebrating Columbus is glorifying European colonialism. Columbus is not a figure to be celebrated, as he enslaved and killed the Taíno. Him and his men also sexually abused Taíno women and girls, some as young as 9 years old. He was even arrested in his own time for crimes he committed against Spanish colonists, which included flogging and executions without trial.

For these reasons, the statue of Christopher Columbus in Elizabeth should be removed and replaced with a monument to someone who is deserving of being celebrated, Marsha P. Johnson.

Marsha P. Johnson was a black activist and trans woman who was born and raised right here in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She was a central figure in the 1969 Stonewall uprisings which was an important event for gay liberation, and led to the first gay pride marches in the U.S.

Marsha was revered and was an inspiration to many in the LGBT+ community. She was a part of the Gay Liberation Front and staged a sit-in protest at NYU when the administration cancelled a dance sponsored by gay organizations. She also co-founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) with her close friend Sylvia Rivera. They established a shelter for homeless, gay and trans kids called the STAR house, where they provided shelter, food, clothing and emotional support. She was referred to as “Saint Marsha” because of the things she did for New York’s LGBT+ community.
