Your dog or cat is no longer your pet ... according to PETA

I wish this was some kind of early April Fool's joke, but sadly it's 100% true.

PETA has now determined that the term "pet" is offensive, and therefore should no longer be used.

Is it even possible for a dog or cat to be offended since, ya know, they don't actually know what the word means when they hear it?

And what about the term "owner" when used to describe pets? The people who feed, bathe, house and take them to the vet - and pay for it all with their own money - are indeed "owners', aren't they? The pets aren't allowed to take off on their own to other neighborhoods or states, are they? Dogs are kept on leashes or in pet carriers or cages most of the time, aren't they? So yes, they are 100% "possessions".

Has PETA gone over the deep end?

Well, it looks like PETA is at it again. A representative for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals explained why the organization wants people to change the way they speak about their pets. Jennifer White, a senior media officer at PETA, spoke on Good Morning Britain with Piers Morgan and co-host Susanna Reid about using the term “pet” to refer to one’s domestic animals.

According to White, the animal rights organization feels “pet” is a derogatory term and suggested people should stop using it since it is not animal-friendly language. She stated, “A lot of people at home who have dogs or cats will call them ‘pets’ and refer to themselves as ‘owners,’ and this implies that the animals are a possession, like a car, for example, When you refer to animals, not as the living beings they are, but as an inanimate object, it can reflect our treatment on these animals.”

PETA just does what they do for attention and funding. They're purposeful lunatics.

On the surface, PETA seems great. But...

They have a low adoption / high euthanasia rate.
They think it's wrong for disabled people to use animals.
They put out a coloring book that tells kids that if they have a parent that hunts, that parent will murder their puppies & kittens.

And yes, they don't believe in pet ownership, even though most pets are the most well cared for animals anywhere.

PETA is not a friend to animals.

I've never really thought about this before, they're making an interesting philosophical point, thanks for raising it to my attention.

I'll probably keep saying "bring home the bacon" though.

Okay I don't have a clue what you mean, so I'm gonna find a nice warm spot in the sun and turn around about 5 times before laying down and putting my paws over my eyes and taking a catnap.

I'm waiting to find out that there's something unhealthy about meatless burgers.

Perhaps this is making mountains out of molehills? From the linked article:

.

Still, in regards to the “pet” situation, White stated that PETA doesn’t necessarily hate the word, but is only encouraging people to use “companion” instead. Fighting back, Morgan stated PETA would have to change the name of its organization since the title contains the word pet, but White noted that it doesn’t apply to the company’s name since Peta is an acronym. She stated, “[The word ‘pet’] is not offensive, we’re not telling anyone it’s offensive. Animals aren’t offended by it, we’re not offended by it.”

.

Suggesting people consider the word "companion" and to think about the relationship we have with our pets and the abuses in the pet industry is about the least of the things PETA has done for attention.

.

"Companion" is already used as an alternative word, as is "furbaby" in recognition of the increase in the number of pets being baby substitutes for childless couples?

Huh? I don't get that at all.

PETA stands for "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals".

Nowhere is the word "pet".

What's next? Will they not want us to use the word "animal" because it's a derogatory term for humans? Where does it end?

Ok PETA. I’ll play your stupid game.

But be careful what you wish for because if it’s not a pet, it’s potentially food!
