NPG Tribute Band playing MPLS rally for Bernie - WDYT

The NPG tribute band featuring Morris Hayes, Sonny T., Tony M., Et Al, will be performing in MPLS at a political rally featuring presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, and U.S. House Representative Ilhan Omar.

How do you feel about this? Is this a respectful use of his material?

disgusting sanders is a horrible being. he stands against freedom and liberty.

No one is coming for your abortion: they just want common-sense abortion regulations: background checks, waiting periods, lifetime limits, take a class, and a small tax.

Well, I get that's your opinion of Bernie. However, I'm angling towards discussion of if his music should be used directly to endorse a candidate. He was a Jehovah's Witness, and their stance is to put God first, and do not openly support candidates.

well he did play for that barack guy... not a rally, a private party... But I agree they should not use his name or music to support sanders...

Odd they wouldn’t play for Klobuchar. She is very vocal about her support of Prince. Anyways, it is best to keep political candidates and Prince separate.

This doesn't feel right to me. And that is not based on any pro or anti Sanders sentiment. I don't follow US politics closely enough to have a valid opinion. But I did follow Prince's career extensively. Throughout 99% of his career, Prince was notoriously apolitical. Rightly or wrongly, his Jehovah's Witness faith even encouraged him not to vote - an aspect of the faith he seemed eager to embrace. The NPG should be about representing the life and legacy of Prince. I doubt very much that Prince would have done a rally concert for Sanders (nor any other major political figure) would he still be alive today. And I think the NPG should respect that. Just my 2 cents.

As someone who thinks Bernie is the best thing to happen to US politics in 50 years, I kind of agree. But then again, they can play for whoever they want, it's their future, Prince is gone.

Musicians gotta gig to eat. Prince's music isn't secular. The NPG is not representing Jehovah's Witnesess.

Barack Obama was the "guy's" name. You focused on the candidate, not the band. What if they were playing for a Trump rally?

In general artists do not go for dystopian world views, such as Trumps. They see there is no place for them in that kind of government structure. Many totalitarian regimes persecute artists. Like China's Ai WeiWei, considered an "enemy of the state".

i would say sanders is much more dystopian than trump... much much more. "we will take care of you! We will tell you what your needs are and we will meet them!"

you do not like trump but he has not put forth any policies that would take away by force (deadly if need be) properties and rights of many people as sanders has... and that that barack guy would have loved to!

(people like sanders, warren, AOC, and many who support them posed a danger to the world...)

You never said if you would be OK with NPG playing a Trump rally. This is not a Sanders, Warren or AOC thread.

Valid point. Bills have to be paid. But why not let Trump use Purple Rain during his visit to MPLS? Obviously, there are Trump voters who enjoy Prince music.

Is the music universal? Is his music now just a commodity to be selectively used at the desires and agenda of the estate, not paying any mind to the desires of Prince?

Honestly it's a tough one for me. Stuff like this is why I can at least understand why some fans will take hard no positions on past associates using Prince to their benefit.

I already posted why most artists do not share a world view such as Trumps. There's a reason for that. Trump couldn't even get anybody to play his inauguration.

The estate told Trump a year before not to use Prince's music and he did it anyway, nothing to do with Trump Prince fans enjoyment. Don't know what the NPG tribute band has in their contracts.

Prince left his music here when he died. It's really not up to anyone to police it morally. As I said, Prince's music is not secular anyway.

it is not about trump either... and it is about sanders in as much as that who they are supporting. If someone is going to say trump is a tyrant and pretend sanders and his ilk are not... i am going to call them out on it..

I was there. It was cool. Brother Ali played 4 or 5 songs first and then the NPG came on and played:

U Got the Look

Cream

7

Nothing Compares 2 U

Get Up Stand Up (Bob Marley) w/ Andre Cymone

Gold

They had the crowd going! They funked the place up! MacKenzie, Tony M and Greg Boyer were up on the main stage and since there was not enough room the rest of the band (Morris, Sonny etc.) were on a little second stage added in the back that could have drums, keyboard etc. set up on it.)

When Bernie came on one of the first things he did was to thank the NPG for playing "unbelievable!" he said and "they keep reminding us of the brilliance of one of the greatest musicians of our lifetimes, your very own Prince!!"

Right. Your first reply below, #2. I never called Trump a tyrant either. Just continue to ignore the actual topic and troll on then.
