The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that Air Peace Airlines has volunteered to send an aircraft to South Africa from Friday, September 6, to evacuate Nigerians who wish to return to the country, free of charge.

According to a statement signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Ferdinand Nwonye, the development follows the recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other African migrants.

The statements reads, “The general public is hereby advised to inform their relatives in South Africa to take advantage of this laudable gesture.

“Interested Nigerians are therefore advised to liaise with the High Commission of Nigeria in Pretoria and the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg for further necessary arrangement.”

I would say we mystify rather than clarify things, if we put this down to some exotic "tribal drive." For one thing, the current violence is based on nationality, rather than tribe. It's xenophobic hostility, directed in particular at Nigerian immigrants. The context would appear to be that, in a country where there is 28% unemployment, and thus needs that are going unmet (and political questions about why this is so), some struggling South Africans seem to regard immigrants as taking 'their' jobs'. The violence is still appalling, of course, and has prompted protests rejecting identitarian antagonisms, such as the one outside the South African embassy in Kinshasa pictured below. But it's not fundamentally dissimilar to xenophobic and racist sentiment elsewhere in the world, including what we have seen at home, and it has arisen at a particular time, in particular circumstances, rather than as the expression of some timeless urge. So I tend to think the ready-made concepts we've historically used to explain affairs on the 'dark continent' might not help us understand it.

Nonetheless, very sad to see this playing out anywhere.

I'm not mystifying anything.

We're all tribes of the earth

Just following the org rules, with an opening thought.

I know it is deeper than that.
