EMILY SHAPIRO,ABC News 14 minutes ago

"Five people have been shot and killed by a gunman who opened fire in a series of shootings near Odessa in western Texas, according to authorities.

The suspect has been shot and killed, Midland Police officials said.

Police said there were 21 shooting victims.

The shooting began with a traffic stop by a Texas Department of Public Safety officer, authorities said. It was not clear what led to the traffic stop.

The suspect fired at the officer and fled, then started to shoot at people in multiple locations, police said..."

The fact that this is making big news tells us how rare it is in Texas... this happens every weekend in Chicago and Detroit and NYC!

Gun Murders and Murder rates per 100,000 people:

.

New York 383 for 1.9 per 100,000

Texas 906 for 3.3 per 100,000

Illinios 404 for 3.4 per 100,000

Michigan 389 for 3.9 per 100,000

.

Not so distinctly different. Texas is the highest in total and not that much better than Illinios and Michigan in proportion to population.

Waaaaay too close to home. Having read the reports, and intimately knowing the locations mentioned is unnerving, to say the least.

Sadly, i expected it to happen there at some point. El paso was close, this is where i went to HS.

Odessa is and always will be deep red. Its ted cruz land, and everyone has a gun. They use them as decoration. Im not surprised it happened, it was only a question of when.

But having to check on my mother, other immediate family, extended family, and old friends... too too much.

I view the next few days as names are released with a stomach churned by dread.

Also, knowing that shooter was white and in his 30s, and very likely a resident based on the places he chose to shoot... i am really really hoping its not someone i knew and grew up with. Immediately based on the description, but no name released, you think of people you went to HS with who it could easily be.

Genuinely, I cannot imagine all the things that must run through someone's head when they hear a random shooting has occured close to where they live. Thanks for your honesty about it. It sends shivers down me, it really does, and I'm the other side of the pond!

If you're going to refer to people as 'scum' or 'garbage vomit', at least have a reason to do so.

I am so sorry for what it must be like to wonder if you knew any of this terrorist's victims in your hometown. To be counting family, friends and aquaintances - and waiting. hug

You were the first person I thought of when I first heard about it because I remembered that you´re actually from Odessa and then I saw your post on FB in my timeline.

I hope that nobody you know is affected by this. neutral

I am glad that you are honest. And I can see your point. It is a shame we have evil people like that 17 year old kid in Alabama that shot up a football game. But until all the bad guys are gone and until their is ZERO threat of crime or attacks foreign or domestic... we need to keep them and keep the right to them. I know it is scary. But It is far better to have dangerous freedom that safe oppression.

eek On top of the horror of it all, this must also be surrealistic for you. hug The saddest statement you made is that you expected it would one day happen. What are the elements or circumstances in this community that led to that expectation?

Its one of the most gun loving places ive ever seen. It also swings wildly from a very poor to a very rich to a very poor place every 10 or 12 years, based on oil. As such, alcoholism and other addictions, abuse, and violence run high there

Back in 1983 and again in 2015, it was named the most dangerous city in america, and stays on that list most years. They have a very large violent crime level.

Through various people i know, i have heard the names of a few of the dead. Thankfully, i dont know any of them.

The 17 month old who was shot in the face will hopefully live, but she is the saddest part of this.

I cant even begin to imagine how awful it is to be in odessa today.

Something is spiritually wrong with Texas. Right wingers just worship guns. At least with inner city violence that is caused by our drug war, as is the violence in Mexico. End the drug war and crickets would dominate in Chicago.

Only, you need to walk the bigoted stuff man.

The "good guy with a gun" is just more NRA bullshit.

Texas is set to relax a whole bunch of gun laws September 1, including giving pencil dick gun-nuts the right to bring their guns to church. I'm sure Jesus would approve.

Our governor said he's sick of people dying, but he's part of the reason people are dying. He's a radical - and I do mean radical - right-wing Republican who sucks the NRA's dick like it gives out a cure for his broken legs and spine. HINT: It doesn't. Our governor is a Repubilcan, which is to say he's a moron.
