Marianne Williamson plan for a Department of Peace

https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/elections/presidential/caucus/2019/08/19/marianne-williamson-unveils-department-peace-plan-includes-peace-academy-proposal-2020-elections/2049803001/

Presidential candidate and author Marianne Williamson on Monday announced her plan to create a cabinet-level Department of Peace if elected to the White House.

The proposed department, which would have to be created by an act of Congress, would "work actively and interactively with every branch of government on policy matters related to both international and domestic peace issues."

"It's ironic to me that George Bush's Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, said, 'We must learn to wage peace,'" Williamson said in an interview with the Register at her Des Moines residence Monday.

"Expertise in peacebuilding is just as sophisticated and important as expertise in military action," Williamson said. "I have great respect for the military. My father fought in World War II. I see the military much like one would look at a surgeon. Obviously, the United States needs to have the best surgeons in the world, but everyone knows you only have surgery if you absolutely must."...

The idea of a U.S. Department of Peace has been around since the 1700s. Benjamin Rush, a founding father and physician, called for a "Peace Office" that would be equal to the Department of War.

In 1935, U.S. Sen. Matthew Neely of West Virginia introduced the first bill for the creation of a U.S. Department of Peace.

Author and 2020 Democratic candidate Marianne Williamson speaks with the Register on her Department of Peace proposal on August 19. "Desperate people do desperate things. Large groups of desperate people become more vulnerable to ideological capture by genuinely psychotic forces," Williamson said. "Policy should be guided by a core value of helping people thrive." Her suggestion is a great suggestion. As long as she has suggestions such as this, I hope she stays in the race.

whenever I listen to generals, the ones who actually fight wars, most argue for NOT going to war if preventable.
It's not the War Department getting us into wars, it's the politicians in aggregate that have gotten us into wars. It's the W's and Congress that have gotten us into wars.
.

Oh, I get that. It's why I've been for mandatory military service for all Americans, no exceptions.

If all the rich kids were in the military and were at risk of facing hostile fire, we'd never be in another war again.

Would you mind calling Williamson a dope again?

It's absolutely scintillating commentary that wasn't properly expressed the first 2 times.

I like her. I think she makes some people uncomfortable because she speaks the ugly truths, about societal ills that many are afraid to talk about.

Joseph Goebbles would be proud. I wonder how many people actually understand that keeping Russia-loving, North Korea-pacifying, America-hating Republicans in power always requires lying and fabricating BS over and over and over and over and over and over, while ignoring the fact that those countries are indiscriminately killing people? People who post the kind of stuff meant to distract us from that sound like Communist appeasers who would rather see us cave to Russia and North Korea than stand for America.

Fake evangelicals ( meaning nearly every single evangelical alive ) are clearly threatened by her because she is more "christian" than any of them. They would prefer to be haters, racists and the furthest thing from Jesus' teachings. They value war and hate much more than peace and love. Sick sick people.

I think that actually they value money and tax cuts more than they believe in the Ten Commandments. The hate and war is just a side effect of the desire for money.

Either way, not a good position for a self-described Christian to be in when they meet their maker.

It amazes me how threatened people are by her message. Benjamin Rush, one of the "founding fathers" they say they love so much, proposed a Peace Office as a counterpart to the War Office.

People can't wait to stifle her - it's very telling. Elections are about airing viewpoints, not just bean counting our way to a "winner".

Lord knows this isn't going to be much of a choice type of election anyway, given the #1 goal in 2020 is voting Beelzebub out.

Experts Criticize Marianne Williamson's Views on Vaccines, Depression and Illness

https://time.com/5644331/...kepticism/

Health care experts say Democratic presidential candidate Marianne Williamson‘s views on vaccines, antidepressants and other treatments could hurt public health efforts and stigmatize people with disabilities.

A first-time candidate, the self-help author has faced criticism for her skepticism of vaccines, which stop the spread of deadly diseases such as measles and mumps; her doubts about the benefits of antidepressants used to treat people with clinical depression; and her past remarks that illness is simply an illusion.

Williamson is still polling at less than 1% and remains a distant longshot to win the Democratic nomination, but advocates warn that the higher profile the primary is giving to her unscientific views could do real harm, as research has shown that simply repeating false information can make it seem more credible over time.

It’s good she’s a skeptic. Too many stupid people fall for anything and don’t question it. Just like how stupid-ass people fell for trump and voted for him.

Agree. I like how she challenged the other democratic candidates. I don’t think she’ll win, but I like that she makes a lot of people uncomfortable, because her views, makes some question their conscience, and many don’t like that.

But I agree with you that the election will be, to vote for the best democratic candidate who can beat that disturbed simpleton currently in office.

Skeptism is good.

Trump is bad.

Love is good.

peace is good.

The issue is what are her solutions, or an alternative to vaccination, or will some poor sap who falls for her nonsense injure her loved ones or the community?

The issue is no one is AGAINST love. (Generalization)

No one is against peace (generalization)

I and many others dislike Turd.
None of the democratic nominees are going to say love is bad, or peace is bad, or Turd is good. Or skeptism is necessarily bad. It's just so cringeworthy.

It's the simple-mindedness her CAPTAIN OBVIOUS message ..WITHOUT real answers. AND possibly dangerous ideology regarding health issues.

Its the same ploy that charlatans, televangelists, the Republican Party, and yes, 'self-help gurus' trying to hock books employ.

And ..she's just a dope.

Agree. She is dismissed for all the wrong reasons. Was listening to an interview with her the other day. One thing she said that struck me was - keep going, don't give up. The peace army (my words), may be small now but look at the changes made by the civil rights movement, women's sufferage, and so many other movements that were not mainstream or had large masses of the country supporting them.

Lol.

You missed something...We have a simple-minded, arrogant, rude, sexist, racist, disrespectful, hateful, angry, miserable individual in the highest office in the country. Has a problem saying nice things about people. Maybe he missed a few hugs and love along the way.

Vaccinations: There are many Americans who don’t feel comfortable pumping vaccines into the their children or themselves. Example, Flu vaccines fail all the time. Didn’t work for me, because I still caught the flu, twice, and refuse to take flu shots again. I’ve been fine without taking it for 2 years now.

Love: No one’s against love? Tell that to all those who have low self-esteem issues, because they don’t feel loved; those who embrace hate towards others because of race, religion. Those who commit crimes/kill.

The many who do rob/kill others for lack of money, material bs., etc., If they cared/had compassion for others, they wouldn’t commit harm.

Many in our country lack respect/compassion/love towards others, because they’re not taught that at home. There’s been an increase in hate crimes. I’d say this country lacks compassion/love/respect in many ways. There’s nothing simple-minded about desiring to see more of that instilled in Americans. What is the point of people going to church if it’s not to teach all of that?

You don’t have to agree. If her existence makes you livid, well I doubt it would have any affect on her life, as she seems pretty confident and grounded about who she is. Carry on.

Can you imagine what it would be like today, if those who came out and fought for justice, peace, equal rights, didn’t have the gift of love and compassion in their hearts, and valued the lives of others, to the point they put their own lives at risk, because they cared about how people should be treated?

The whole country would be full of evil, disrespectful, hateful turds like trump.

Not saying some of those hateful types don’t exist now, but if we didn’t have Americans that gave a damn, and stand up against haters/bullies/racists, etc., we’d be in more trouble, than we are in today.

Carry on. [Edited 8/22/19 8:08am]

I find it baffling how some here point to Trump as the counterpoint. EVERYONE is better than Turd. That's obvious too.
Are we looking for lesser of dopes? Or are we looking for a qualified candidate?

poppys

Trying to have a thread about Marianne Williamson here. As mentioned upthread, there is only one choice in 2020. Whoever it is. This is not an election or polling thread per se.
