I was just watching the news and a pizza delivery / mailman not only got nothing back in his return, but owed $. Basically, this tax law is screwing the middle class. Even if you got a smidge more $ in your paycheck, it does not equal the one-lump tax return you'd normally get. People count on getting back a return to buy things like cars, vacations etc. Now the auto-industry is worried about depleted sales due to this stupid tax law.

Gues what? If people do not spend $$$, the economy will take a hit.

Agree. But the entire leadership of the country (Dems and Repubs) knew that when they passed it. That's why they said to change your withholding like Penny did. They knew the checks would look slightly bigger while they were screwing your ass come refund time.

But the tax law was fully supported by the Orange and voted on by a MAJORITY of Republicans in the House & Senate. Which high-ranking Dems voted for it?

YES NO Not voting

YES NO Not voting

Democrats 0 191 2

The 2 house Dems that didn't vote were Kennedy, MA and Pocan, WI.

You're right Dimi, no Senate Dems voted for it either, makes me feel a little better. McCain was the absent vote. At this point, I'm so pissed at them all I can't see straight. It definitely affects my business, no disposable income for fun stuff.

Just seeing a photo of that demon Ryan again makes me ill. Dems need to use this EVERY DAY in the Presidential campaign.

How Every Senator Voted on the Tax Bill

NYT -DEC. 19, 2017

The Senate voted 51-48 on Wednesday to pass the Republicans’ tax overhaul bill in a party-line vote.

Majority needed to pass Yes No Not voting Republicans 51 0 1 Democrats 0 48 0 Total 51 48

One reason for the different tax returns is that President Trump's tax bill lowered withholding. So you got a bigger paycheck, but you didn't have as much set aside by your employer for taxes.

Most people didn't realize this, and that's what the sticker shock is about for many. But of course for others, they had deductions like state and local taxes taken away.

No matter how you slice it, no one who makes less than $500K a year or so is going to like this new tax structure.

I claim a "1" on my W4 - are you saying I need to claim 0?

My pay checks were ever so slightly bigger after the tax bill went into effect - but there is no way the few dollars difference equaled the amount of my refund.

My employer messed up our W2s this year so we are waitng for them to reissue them which is why I have not filed yet - but with no deductions I am not sure if I get back anything or will owe money.

Most of us got effed by this tax bill. mad

They need to fix that when we get a real Senate. Also limits on the corporate tax cuts. I think it will be a tough battle though. The peeps will need to exert a lot of voting pressure to shame them into it.

it is funny to hear people actively calling for higher taxes whine and cry that they had to pay some tax! Or had to pay a little more. And I have the feeling that most either messed themselves up... or something else changed they do not understand or they are just not being honest.

As to W4s... there is not many who should claim 0 or really even 1... I would say use the calculator (Most should have 3 or more) if you are scared reduce it by one or elect for an additional $25 to $50 withheld.

Also: if you can fill everything out as soon as you can so you can see if you owe so you can get the funds together.

No one is coming for your abortion: they just want common-sense abortion regulations: background checks, waiting periods, lifetime limits, take a class, and a small tax.

I helped someone do her taxes and she 'lost' about $2000 in a refund over last year but that was due to one of her kids turning 17 so they lost the child tax credit--and had ZERO to do with the Trump law.

So some of the reports have nothing to do with the changes in law.

And yes as I a long time ago...when the law first was passed... that the doubling of the exemptions would not be enough to cover the loss of the deductions and that laws for the child tax credit were more restrictive than for a plain dependant. (like a cousin could be a dependant but not a child unless it was court ordered). So in some cases where one had 3 or more unqualified child dependents, they would very well pay more even at a modest amount of $60,000.

Only are you that naive? Do you realize that parents or guardians, before Trump, could claim a deduction for a child as long as you provided more than half of their support. I have a 21 yo who is in college and still lives at home. She works, but she does not earn more than half of her support, so we claim her as a dependent. We will lose that deduction, so our taxes will increase. There are a large percentage of families in this same situation.

A child care tax credit is something totally different. You could never claim a childcare tax credit for a kid that is older than 12, unless they have special needs. This is a credit for having to pay a baby sitter or daycare while the parents work.

You right wingers are so blind to the realities of what the republican party really is about. You Trump followers are letting him lead you into the abyss. WAKE UP!

Also.... I do not whine about higher taxes - I am happy to pay a higher tax if I know it is going to fund something that is for the greater good of my community.

and you too are confused and seem to be indicating you do not quite grasp how the system works.

Now I was one of the first people to mention that some in the middle class (specifically ones with 3 or more dependents) would end up paying more.

I get that doubling the deduction was not enough to overcome the loss of exemptions.

But they did add a $500 credit for qualifying dependents. But even that may not be enough.

I get that. That sucks. I have said I do not like it.

However! Many still are confusing their refund amount with how much tax they actually paid.

you can pay LESS in tax and still get a lower refund. Some say the best result is ZERO... nothing owed nothing back. Some like to get a refund... I got $2K and got a new couch! (that was more than I got in last year and I paid MORE in taxes)

I hate it. the gas tax needs to be slashed. Gas should cost about $1 a gallon. as it is now the government makes more than the oil company does.

Yes, but they were also using the slightly bigger take home pay on paychecks to point out "how wonderful" this tax cut was and wasn't Donald incredible for doing it. Some people were confused and didn't realize the increased take home pay would come due at tax time, because of how hard the republicans pushed "Look at your checks! Isn't it grand!? You have more money coming in under Donald Trump!"
