Ringling Bros. Circus coming to an end after 146 years

ELLENTON, Fla. (AP) -- After 146 years, the curtain is coming down on "The Greatest Show on Earth." The owner of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus told The Associated Press that the show will close forever in May.

The iconic American spectacle was felled by a variety of factors, company executives say. Declining attendance combined with high operating costs, along with changing public tastes and prolonged battles with animal rights groups all contributed to its demise.

"There isn't any one thing," said Kenneth Feld, chairman and CEO of Feld Entertainment. "This has been a very difficult decision for me and for the entire family."

The company broke the news to circus employees Saturday night after shows in Orlando and Miami.

Ringling Bros. has two touring circuses this season and will perform 30 shows between now and May. Major stops include Atlanta, Washington, Philadelphia, Boston and Brooklyn. The final shows will be in Providence, Rhode Island, on May 7 and in Uniondale, New York, at the Nassau County Coliseum on May 21.

As an animal lover I have mixed feelings on this. While I really enjoyed watching it, I did always feel uncomfortable about how the animals were treated. Sure losing the elephants was a major blow, but I think lack of interest by today's children had a lot more to do with it.

Good. Their abuse of animals has went on way, way too long.

This experience will cover courtship, sex, commitment, fetishes, loneliness, vindication, love, and hate.

Cirque de Soleil definitely took away some of Ringling's business.

I have zero interest in ever going to a circus... and i am sure the animals were treated less that what I would approve of... so in that way i am fine with it being shut down.

yet--i have seen animal rights people say how great this is! How great it is that the animals won... that their activism won! And I get a concern:

my issue is the people like the PETA people and many other animal rights groups will never stop until all use of animals is banned. No meat! Not Leather! No Fur! No pets! No testing!

forget that noise!

like the group food inc... they want to ban all animals for food! they pretend they just want to inform... LIE. (they are also opposed to Pro-choice!)

I last went to it thirty years ago when I got free tickets and even then, it felt like an enterprise on its last legs. The trained elephants really bothered us.

As to the claims that it was PETA like bullies that shut it down... i am sure they were a factor. Some truth to what they said...sure. Some of it was just their over-reach to ban things they do not like...but I do think much of it was it was just that not enough people wanted to go. From what I've heard they've struggled for decades.

I thnk it was a matter of time...and the protests just sped up the process.
