Is

that's why I stopped watching this show in 2006

During the phase of the competition where the judges were on the verge of deciding who the final 12 contestants were going to be

there was this black woman contestant, she was 28 years old

I can not remember her name.....but she had a jazzy styled singing voice, very mature......sounded like Anita Baker

and Simon Cowell told her in her face w/the cameras rolling that she didn't stand a chance on winning because of her voice and her ethnic look and the style of music she enjoyed singing

That was the year Taylor Hicks won

and before anyone asumes that I'm always thinking black

I felt Clay Aiken should have won in 2003 (he had more range and versatility than Ruben Studdard), and Bo Bice should have won in 2005 (he brought it every single week)

Yeah, and in Yahoo's lead stories there's also a headline about Lego racism. Fuck this bullshit. Lego people are yellow and American Idol has a long history of chosing, presenting and promoting MANY different ethnicities. Have people totally forgotten all of them? That several of them became big stars? This shit is tired.

This season is the first time I've watched Idol in several years. I stopped watching when I realized that black females seemed to be unrepresented in the Top 12. I guess they were thinking if they couldn't find any light-complected black girls who looked like Beyonce with long, blonde hair who could sing a little bit, people wouldn't be interested. Hopefully, with Mariah and Nicki on the panel, they will have at least a couple of talented black women in the Top 12 this year.

To me season 2's winner should've been Trenyce, the obviously most polished "idol" of the bunch. But she was never a fan favorite, not even after this:

You really can't have 3 black winners and call it racist. There's always gonna be somebody grumbling that somebody got voted off too soon, but I can name a few seasons where the best singer didn't win. You could just as easily say its sexist and homophobic

I don't know but I do know in 1 of the earlier seasons (I forget which but not the first), there was a black girl who didn't make it to the live shows because she "sounded too much like Whitney Houston" after performing a near carbon-copy of 1 of Whitney's songs. I was so shocked and there was no outcry in the media about it. This girl could sing anything, and maybe she just needed guidance to help find her own style but it was a damn joke that she was cut before live shows.

I do remember a black guy on there named Gideon that sang Sam Cooke. He was very good, but didn't make it to the top 12. They said he sounded too old, but he outsang other finalists in my opinion. It was weird, and sounded like BS at the time.

Except they've had an abundance of female and gay contenstants as well. Many who have gone very far and even won. The whole thing is a joke. "Oh, this person didn't make it so they're racist!" Bullshit. I guess they must be racist towards white people, too, because plenty of them don't make it to the top twelve. rolleyes

This is hilarious...

If anything, what's shameful about American Idol is people thinking it's supposed to be some legit talent show when it's anything but. Please. That's like saying Glee's racist because its only one black character acts like a stereotypical black woman.

There's more things to bring up that it's shameful in its racism. Americon Idle is not one of them and yes I misspelled it on purpose. And? razz

That's what I'm saying-- you can say its a whole bunch of things, but basically it has evolved into a hybrid of cougars and teeny boppers voting. They're both voting for the rebellious looking WGWG (white guy with guitar)

Adam lambert mopped the floor with kris Allen and Joshua ledet outsang Phil Phillips. It's all about getting exposure anyway and the winner's albums usually end up sucking anyway

Bullshit!

Ruben, Fantasia and Hudson - weren't camera friendly lookers when they were featured on the show, yet they did extremely well.

People play the race card too much in the States.

I wouldnt call AI racist in ALL aspects but I think in the past some aspects about how they chose singers and critiqued them were prejudiced. I remember when Simon would critique the black women and these women could SING and he flat out would say I dont like your look and how you dress or you dont have a marketable look and these women were dark/brown skin and they exactly were good looking. I think if they had been lighter or light skin he would not have said that.

Also,

There were cases where alot of black contestants had older styles of singing, voices and they did not make it or were criticized for it because it sounded to ethnic.

I have never really taken AI seriously because its not a serious fair talent competition and its always been like that (Even when it was good). There are many contestants that didnt make it or were cut that I thought were FAR better than past winners but they didnt make it because they didnt have a certain look and other factors.

Latoya London is one of my all time favorites and this girl can sanggg. She didnt make it but she has went on to do small gigs. Fantasia won her season and I exactly think Latoya is a much better singer than Fantasia although I do like Fanny. Listen to how Simon critiques her.

The whole audition is not on youtube, here is the link.

Well I was not really giving reasons as far as why their havent been alot of black female winners.

I was just really focusing on their treatment on the show overall and how Simon insulted them alot. Just because their were two black female singers that won does not change that.

I exactly do like Simon by the way. I just thought he was kinda prejudice in his criticism at times but I understand why he did it and the reason why he was on that panel. He represented the mentality of the entire industry. Unfornately this is a problem the industry has faced since the beginning of time.

Yeah this American Idol stuff is much to bout nothin. You can't make racist
claims with this show. I'd prefer people bring to light more important examples of racism in America like the racism against the president. I do however dislike
it at times when people dismiss racism as though it never existed or doesn't
exist and they never experienced it or had family before them who have
experienced it.

Yeah, I'm fine with them showing how racism still exists overall rather than trying to find it on some tired ass show...lol

We might be able to argue the varacity of racism but if the article is true, something's not right here.

Why invite someone on your show, expoit their non-convicted arrest record THEN disqualify them? And NO white contestants ever? Because white contestants during the audition process has NEVER had an arrest record?

Well as far as I know the "white" contestants didn't have criminal records... so I don't know how that really applies yet. Then again I don't follow the show like that so how do I know?

He's a complete idiot who knows nothing about music but yet hosted a music show. Years ago, I was checking the TV Guide channel as the chart scrolled to see what was coming up on TV. In the top half of the screen, they had a rerun of "American Idiot" playing. (Like I've said many times before, it's not a matter of simply not watching something you don't like, the media puts it all over the place to where you can't escape the bullshit.) Anyway, some woman sang Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" and that idiot told her if she was going to do a Celine Dionne song, she had better do it right. Another woman sang "Magic Man" by Heart and he told her she should never sing a song that no one has ever heard of before. It's no wonder that nothing but tired stuff comes from that show because it was hosted by an idiot.

Andy is a four letter word.

Le sigh...the two Black women who DID win are both dark skinned and were on the fleshy side.

Fantasia was skinny back then, and Jordin Sparks is mixed race and light skinned. You might not know what Jordin Sparks is at first look. She looks racially ambiguous. Did you actually watch the shows because Jordin is far from being dark skinned? Jen Hudson got kicked off early, and we know she can sing. Jen has a Grammy and Oscar, but at the time Simon told her she didn't have what it takes. Elton John said the show was racist. Elton John says a lot of things, lol, but I'm just stating what he said.

Also, the black winners won in very early seasons, (with the exception of Jordin who is mixed race). FOX television is known to do that, go for the black audience then drop them. Look at how they had black sitcoms on when they were a new network in the early 90's (Martin, Living Single), courting the black audience, then cutting them when they got established. WB, UPN, now CW have done this as well. I would not be surprised if they have gone for a mainstream look, or image now that the show has been on for many years. Even Simon said X Factor would be more diverse than what AI has become. I watched Fantasia's bio movie and she said they didn't want her to win AI because she was a young, single mom who was on welfare. In the movie, the Idol producers asked her to withdraw. At the very least they are shady.

Great Post! I didnt know Jordan was mixed, I thought she was just light skin, thanks for the enlightement.

When Simon left after 9 years of being a judge, they should have canceled the show and Randy could have been a X factor judge or took another venture.

Yes, Jordan's father is a black ex NFL player, and her mom is white. She had a squeaky clean image, and made it known that she was a virgin. That was far different than Fantasia who was an illiterate, teenage, single mom.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but the last time I looked Randy Jackson was black. I believe he still is.

Also, this is just another story to perpetuate racism and garner attention to a show that is just plain pathetic these days.
