Black in America with Soledad O'Brien

We should all watch this

Did you know that companies in the US have said they would hire a white
man with a felony record and no high school education BEFORE they would
hire a black man with NO criminal record and a 4-year degree?

On July 23 at and July 24, CNN will premier a
series, "Black in America with Soledad O'Brien" and I personally
challenge you to watch it WITH your children, especially your sons, if
you have any, uninterrupted. The aforementioned statistics and many
others will be revealed during the series.

A friend had the privilege of meeting with Soledad O'Brien and
actually SEEING this premier, and what she saw brought tears
to her eyes and anguish, frustration, and a sense of helplessness to her soul.

The first night the series will focus on Women and Families and the
second night is dedicated entirely to the plight of the Black Man in America .
I beg and plead with you PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE watch and internalize

I'm already waiting with eager anticipation! Every time I see the promo, my anticipation builds. Unfortunately, it's not going to reveal anything that Black people don't already know! However, if it enlightens any of the rest of America, it'll definitely be a show worth watching!

I look forward to discussing the show with you and anyone else that is inclined to do so after it's aired.

Here's what bothers ME:

Prince died of an overdose of the drug Fentanyl. Of which, it is very highly fucking likely that he never even knew he'd taken.

Thanks Gray, I am waiting patiently to see this. I know this program was taped during the July 4th weekend in New Orleans and they have been advertising this a lot on CNN. I look forward to seeing this program, with my son. It will be interesting I'm sure.

Watched the first part last night. Was pretty interesting. Have my own personal views about the beginning but will leave that alone. It did cover some important issues dealing with working single mothers, successful African-Americans, African-Americans within a family on various economic issues, hiv/aids and how it affects our community, (just to be clear hiv/aids affect all communities, whether you are black, white, hispanic, asian, straight or gay); also covered black women in interracial relationships and those who chose to date within their own race regardless of the shortage of available black males.

Part two airs tonight on CNN and will focus on the Black Male in America. 9pm Eastern time (reairs at 12am).

I watched last night as well. I find they didn't discuss an aspect I deal with when it comes to interracial relationships and that is black men not being attracted to me.

Watched both segments twice, it was different than I thought it would be and so much to it. To me it mostly was more on showing the diversity within the black community vs. finding the solutions to the problems that plague the community the most. For myself I would have to look into this further because a lot of the statistics were confusing to me, more like a conflict of statistics. Personally, I don't feel it touched on people like me that much but I realize I fit in there amoung the range. For those who have no contact with the culture it might have been an eye-opening experience, which more of what they wanted to do. I missed all the morning commentaries which I believe I would have gotten more of. I hope those will be available this weekend along with the replays of the segments.

eh, to me this sort of program comes off as nothing more than a distraction. rather than focus on our unjustwar and the fact that nobody plans on ending it, or our downwardly spiraling economy which nobody evben wants to admit is true let alone has any idea how to fix it, or the the housing market crisis which is growing and beginning to spread into overall bankruptcy in general for the middle class, they stick to the same old same old.

"let's talk about the races again. that always gets everyone distracted...:

sorry but there's bigger news than being "black in america" these days.

Wow. That is sad. Don't sweat those brothers that call you ugly. I am sure that there is someone out there for you, don't give up hope.

i'm sorry but confused back to you. i don't even know what that's supposed to mean. sorry i'm testy and all but i see this nation literally falling apart - from its infrastructure to its economy - and people are still pushing the racial divide stories? i can't imagine its for any other reason than distraction. did the story say anything new? did it offer any solutions or did it just point out all the problems? and to make it a series of shows? come on, man!

You know I felt the same way too. I much preferred seeing a panel just like how they had it in the program "Reclaiming the Dream". I would have liked to hear more about finding solutions to the problems that plague our community, because many of us know the problems that already exists, problem is, how to fix it.

I also agree that it gave those who had no knowledge of what's going on within our communities some insight, and seeing how we are not monolithic and live on various economic scales.

Probably. But for me, this was a very good topic to cover. What comes of this? I don't know. But we all can do our part to make sure we help our fellow man/woman as best as we can.

Did you even watch the shows? It wasn't even about racial divide in the country. It was about Black life in America. I sure as hell rather watch this than to watch some BS reality television. And damn, every news show is talking about how fucked up this country is.

If you don't feel that racism is a problem that needs to be solved so we can actually stand as a nation then I can't help you.
