So,now I have no right to be offended?

Okay,I have a very weird yet cool teacher 4 my art class.Hes incredibly talented and I thought he was really funny.Well, our class consists of 3 people. Its a very small senior class.Well, its me(im black),my friend(a Puerto Rican girl),and my other friend(a bi-racial Black and Italian girl).Well, one time when my Puerto Rican friend was absent from the class and me and my art teacher were doing our usual joking around when he called my friend,(the Puerto Rican girl) a Mexican.Me and my friend instantly corrected him b/c thats our friend and she hates when people call or assume that she is Mexican, which she is not.I respect that.He goes on to make some racial slurs and says something along the lines of her being "a lazy Mexican".Me and my friend are shocked and come to my other friend's and Mexicans' defense. My art teacher then tells us how one of his "best friends" is Mexican and he always calls him a "lazy Mexican" as a joke.He tries 2 coax us into laughing and we try 2 maintain the humor but it was still an uneasy uncomfortable feeling in the room.I never told my Puerto Rican friend about the incident b/c she doesnt like him anyway and that would cause more racial drama at my school.Well, today I asked my art teacher 4 the url to the girl's soccer team website b/c Im on it.He proceeds too crack jokes by saying its at "www.retards.com" "www.losers.com" then he took me totally off guard by saying "...oh no,I got it,it's www.nappyhair.com"...WTF.I was so offended by this.It brought me back to the Imus situation and even more recently the in-school situation with the black girl getting her arm broken while being called "nappy headed".I told my art teacher to get out of my face.I wanted to cry...but then I felt weak for wanting to cry.I left the class room.Came back and had a full blown argument with him over the meaning of nappy hair.He tried 2 tell me he meant it for the whole team and not just the black girls. He said he was referring to the whole team just having "bad hair".Ive NEVER heard anyone refer to white people's hair as nappy.Ive heard notty, tanlgled, and frizzy but not nappy and Im almost sure from his previous remarks he meant it the way most people mean it.He also had the nerve to tell me I had no right to be offended!!!
Am I overreacting?Should I even talk to this guy anymore? What should I do?

i dont think you overreacted because he had no right to say any of those things.i am amazed at how educated someone can be and still be so stupid.the only thing you can do is ignore him and dont let him get under your skin.just get all the education you can get because he and people like him are only trying to keep you down but only if you let them.

If you have already made up your mind you don't believe him when he says he didn't mean to offend you there's nothing to do.

Otherwise just tell him (politely) again you don't like it when he says those things and I think he'll stop it shrug
From your words I don't sense a bad intention on his behalf, just different views on life.

This guy sounds like a sick puppy. Report his ignorant a$$ to his supervisors and it will go on his record. Even if nothing is done right away, at least the proof will be there on his record if he ever tried to look for another job. When he realizes he could lose his job talking nonsense, then maybe he'll keep his ignorant and stupified opinions to himself. Make sure you have witnesses to back you up and try not to be in an area with him alone, so he could get away saying that with no one else around to prove he says these things. That's basically abuse and you need to report it, especially if his remarks is affecting the way you feel. It's obvious he's making those remarks to make you feel below him and he's will continue doing making those remarks because he feels you're too scared to do anything about it. Don't go for it. You let him get away with it this time, he'll continue to do it to others...hit him where it hurts.

Are you under 18? If you are, he is abusing a minor. Scared for what? If you go directly to the administrators in private and discuss this, then they have to do something about it or they will come under fire. Speak to your parents or another adult you can talk to about it. This is the problem. These teachers think they can do this to kids like you because they have control over your grade. If you can transfer out of that class, but you need to report him. You are lucky I am not your mother because all H*** would break loose if a teacher did that to my kid, and I would confront him myself. He is basically mentally terrorizing you, messing with your esteem. This teacher apparently seems to have a hatred for anything non-white, but apparently that is his hangup, not yours. There is not a d*** thing wrong with your hair, this dude is crazy. He's not man enough to confront an adult like that so he messes with the young folks because he apparently thinks he could get away with it. Just know that smaller situations lead to bigger ones, so you need to take care of this and not be afraid. He's no superior human being, although I'm sure he would like to think that he is

If you're scared, write a letter and send it to the School Superintendent office. You don't have to sign your name, but let someone be aware of what he is doing.

Ill let you know how it turned out.I think I may talk to my teacher who did the presentation on the Jena 6.He seems to really care about keeping the peace at my school and hes not scared to put other teachers in line.I know he'll handle it one way or another.Either having a one on one with my art teacher or going straight to the administration. And Im sure it wouldnt get out and would be handled well in his hands. But,like I said...I'll keep you guys posted. Thanx again 4 the advice everyone.

Very good, no problem, good luck....oh and one more thing...don't ever let anyone make you feel less than a human being, regardless of skin color or texture of your hair. If someone goes to those lengths like your teacher does to lower you, then that's their insecurities and need to feel better than you, bottom line, but you're better than that because your skin tone or hair texture does not define who you are as a human being, it's what's in your heart, mind, soul and spirit that does. Remember that my young sista!....

You have a right to be offended over whatever you please but don't discount the guy just having an irreverent sense of humour. He likely jokes also about crackas, honkies, the Irish, Polaks and everything imbetween. Often its to mock racist attitudes that exist rather than actually believing in it personally. All's fair in the name of comedy, have to laugh or you'd cry etc.

That is unacceptable considering his professional position. Your teacher is basically in the position of mentoring kids and young adults, molding young minds. It's very inappropriate. Tell his higher up (principle maybe).
America's political system used to be about the "pursuit of happiness." Now more and more of us want to stop chasing it and have it delivered.

That is the biggest crock of shit I have ever heard. He is a fucking teacher. There are laws in place to disallow this kind of bullshit. If he wants to joke and be comedic, he can do that shit when he is off duty and with his friends.

Pleasure Principal, please, report his sorry ass. If he doesn't have the common sense to keep his racist bullshit to himself, he has no business being a teacher.

From what I read from your post this teacher seems to be very comfortable in his own biases...he will offend others, and he doesn't seem mature enough to know where to draw the line at joking around so that he doesn't tear down the spirits of the young people he is supposed to TEACH...

So what is he teaching exactly???
He's an art teacher....he should teach art, it's the administration's job to make sure he stays in line with the subject matter he teaches....this is something for his superiors to handle not you....it's you job as a student to learn, your job as a young American to stand up for your rights in a school that your parents pay good money for. YOU are part of the problem if YOU do nothing, racism hits you, you hit back....HARD.
