Considering that a lot of its original inhabitants had been convicted of public drunkeness, this makes perfect sense!

The title of this thread should have been "Whine, anyone?"
There would be a lot more responses!

Wine? In Europe, they don't give you that funny little plastic bull around the bottleneck!! They do in Ireland - I have a whole herd of little plastic bulls on top of my fridge. My wife brought back a bottle of Torres when she was in Madrid recently. She said she had to buy it when she saw the price on it - €3, we usually pay about €9 per bottle here. Campo Viejo Rioja's (any of them) are my favourites from Spain. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

Gosh dern it - Ireland is just THE country!! Move that thang over!! Yay Rioja! whooo-hooo! I recommend a 100% tempranillo as well, RE Spanish stuff. Have you had that?

There is a good selection of wine to be had over here, but I think I've tried all of it by now! You tend to get the same popular stuff everywhere, so it's difficult to find different or new stuff. I guess it makes sense to stock the stuff you know is popular and will sell, but not so great for me (I have dreams of walking into a wine shop and seeing shelves of wines I haven't tried before). I don't think I've tried tempranillo. There's one called Can Vendrell Cabernet Sauvignon Tempranillo in my local off-licence, which I haven't tried yet. Is that the one ? Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

I like Rioja, because it's a good value for the price. I buy it when I'm in Spain, but generally not elsewhere... and anyway, the Spanish have a custom of cutting it with limonada. So even the cheap stuff ends up tasting good, in summer anyway. Tempranillo is a variety - sounds like what you have there is a mix of grapes. Try it and get back to us!

Anyway, I shall indeed try the CabSav/Tempranillo and report back later (but it'll be next week as I won't be going wine shopping until Saturday). Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

I only like red clarets really, Bordeaux in particular. Increasingly you can get a good quality bottle for quite cheap in British supermarkets. Blossom Hill Red made in California is very nice and palatble.
