I'm temporarily working for myself, and it's one of the most satisfying things I've ever done. I opened my own law practice with the following:

• Laptop computer
  
• Cell phone
  
• Mail drop (it gives me a separate business address that isn't a P.O. Box, and it will also receive faxes for me)
  
• Banker's box to hold my files
  
• Two-hole punch (used for putting documents in file binders)
  

The laptop computer and the cell phone essentially cost me nothing, as I already owned them. The banker's box also cost me nothing, as I'd used it to transport my files from my old firm back in Indianapolis to Seattle. The laser printer was $150 (my old one had just died). The mail drop cost me $190 for one year. And I think the hole punch cost me a few bucks at Office Depot. So, the bottom line is that I got my business started for less than $350.

As I said, this is temporary. I have other reasons for wanting to join a Seattle law firm in the short term. But I wouldn't be surprised if ten years from now, I'm once again working for myself. (I should print out this post, put it in an envelope, and write, "Do not open until 2014" on the envelope.)
