Encyclopedias. Seriously. I've just been picking out random articles that look interesting and reading them.

The best entries I read today were the ones about Cashews and Snakes. I was halfway through the one about Transylvania, which was pretty good, but on the next page it was accompanied by a big ass picture of a trap door spider, which scared the shit out of me. I will never open up the T volume ever again.

9s I saw the movie Solaris and found it quite confusing. Have any light you could shed on it?

I'm starting (for the third time) The End of the Affair by Graham Greene. Hopefully I can kill it off on the long plane ride home tomorrow. I've also started the short play Oleanna by David Mamet, and, as always, am rereading Morvern Callar for the eightybazillionth time. JD gave me that book for my birthday and I absolutely love it!

I love Bernard Lewis....platonically, of course.

I watched the Tarkovsky's original version of Solaris recently, and I was contemplating picking up the book. Is it as (to put it nicely) contemplative as the movie?

Fuck Plato, I wanna do him like Aristotle.

boff

I've read Islam and the West as well as the essays he's written since 9-11. He is one of those old school scholars, who just knows everything: languages, history, diplomatics, cultures, you name it. And he writes beautifully.

I especially enjoyed his feud with Edward Said. smile

I've not seen the original, but believe it or not the George Clooney version made me want to read the book. Not that it's a great movie. But it is a good movie. Try the book!
