Absolutely not!

You are simply suffering from moderation sickness.

Take me. I've been on the Org nearly as long as you. I've had my ups and downs with the place but the big difference is that when people came to ask me if I wanted to be a mod, I told them to perish the thought or vanish. Then I threatened them with a restraining order and changed the locks.

Maybe you need a break or a hug, but you don't want to retire. Look at all the people who had to write "I'm back!" posts, blushing in full regal red after all those never never evers. Don't you know it's undignified to leave the Org? Formally at least. If you truly want to retire with dignity, you don't retire -- you just go on a break and never never ever come back. Or not and then when you come back there are no awkward explanations, no public eating of your own words, no "I used to be WB now I'm Byron". smile

So stay. Take a break if you must but don't leave.

Dansa, I hope you don't leave. The Org went through some really crappy times last year and you and your moderation were, for me, the salvation of this place.

I did notice that you have been on here less and I was wondering why. I hope it's not because of being burned out from moderation. I think you do a tremendous job. I was absolutely AMAZED at your level headed response throughout that Quaidbowl fiasco, despite being a target. Your maturity and humor are a model to us all.

Please reconsider. Take some time.

Please.

Exactly what 9s just said.

Please reconsider.

Just five years

Now sit down and listen to Dr. Alf : It's best for your mental stability, to recuperate from mod duty, remove the org from your homepage, and generally do stuff you like.

Anxiety

I'm gonna approach this from two perspectives - as a user of this site, and then as a moderator of this site. One of those perspectives is based on a lot of experience; the other based on a far inferior amount of experience than that of your own time here on the Org (other than perhaps as an observer or, ahem, recipient redface).

Where being an Orger is concerned, don't touch a thing. Trust me on this. Take an Org vacation. Don't tell anyone you're doing it. Just do it for yourself. No announcements, no proclamations, none of that chit. We don't gotta know. And that vacation will last until...hmmm...until ya just feel like comin' back. Lurk for a while. Make yourself not post for a bit. Then post when ya feel ya have something you wanna add. Dip those toes back in the (cess)pool till the water's warm enough. Nothing's holding you back, nothing's tying you down - except your own sense of involvement and ownership, which are important things to consider, but you have to remember these things are malleable if you bend them and shape them with all due accountability and responsibility (both of which are qualities I'm certain you have, so that ain't no thang)....but oops, I'm starting to veer into the mod side of the matter, ain't I? Oopsies.

There was a time a couple of years ago when I was just DONE with this place. I was DONE with Prince, I was DONE with being a fan, and I was DONE with the way this place was being moderated. I mean, dude, I was PISSED. Like a bridge over funky waters, I was over this mess. Anyway...you get the idea. And I came a baby's booty crack close to asking for my account to be deleted - someone on here even took it upon themself to create a "goodbye" thread for me - and when that happened, I figured, hell, sure, why not.

And I just disappeared for a while. Did other stuff. Hung at other haunts on the web. I blogged. Whatever. All my Prince shit went in the closet, literally and figuratively. It was a good thing. Healthy.

And I'm glad I didn't cancel my account or make any "final goodbyes" or burn any bridges. After a nice long hiatus, I eased myself back in and found that not only had the Org become a much less heinous place than I had experienced when I stomped off, but I also realized I had some history here, and with the folks who frequent the site. And that's kind of a lame thing to piss away just because you're bored or burnt out or pissed off.

And you know what? It's just the Internet. It's a tool. You know this membership is free, and it doesn't cost you anything to keep it all safe and tucked away for that rainy day when you know you're gonna want to play with it again. Ya know?

NOW.

About the whole mod thing.

Ya know, doing this whole moderator thing is like being on the other side of the looking glass. It's definitely been an experience and in the short time I've been doing it, it's been a learning experience. It's changed how I look at the way I interact on here, and in a lot of ways it's made me grow the hell up a bit. And in some ways, it's forced me to be a little bit more zen in my approach to people. And in other ways, it's forced me to become a bit more of a hardass. And I'm still making mistakes and learning. Clearly, I can't speak to the experience of having done this for five years.

But in the short time I've done this, I'll tell ya, it can fuck with your head. You can doubt your decisions, you can wonder if maybe you don't deserve the flames you get when you lock or delete or ban or snip, and all kinds of other little moral/ethical bugbears can sneak into your head - many that I'm sure I haven't even encountered yet. And on a good day, whatever - you can mull it over and get right with yourself. But when other stuff in your life is stressing you out, the last thing you need to be worrying about is whether you did the right thing in banning PurpleVaginaHornyPuss because they posted a picture of dwarf porn in the Politics & Religion forum.

This is a volunteer gig, and really, it's only suitable for those who can afford the extra time and effort it takes to sweep up around here. It's fun, it's rewarding in its own weird little way, it's challenging and it's a learning experience - but it's not always something that one necessarily has the capacity for - not all the time.

If you feel you need to take some time away from it, by all means, you should. I think it's a safe bet that the gig will be here waiting for you if you ever decide you want to pick up the ol' moderator's gavel again, be it tomorrow or next year. If you're not having fun, don't force it on yourself. Lighten your load for a while. We got yer back (or, that is, the Org's back) while you go do your thang. Life's about change - maybe this is a change you need to experience. Maybe you'll miss it after a few days and come back. Maybe you'll feel like it's a load off your back and you won't resume doing the mod thing. It's your call, really.

I guess all this is just a long winded way of saying that, yeah, you're appreciated and you'll be missed, but if you feel you need the break - if you feel that doing the moderator thing is getting to you and it's a bit of a drag right now....do whatcha gotta do. It's cool. Yeah.

So there,
- Anx

I always get sad when someone says they are leaving, but Dansa? omfg You ARE the Org dahling! kiss

What will I do without your funny quirks, you never ending Prince photos and your warm caring presence... Dayum... sad This is a blow, but then again, it is your choice and I hope you will be really happy in what you choose.

Again, its your choice, but we will all be sad to see you go... STAY BIYATCH!!! machinegun Even if I have to kill you to just stay here.. evillol

You will be missed, but maybe all you need is a break batting eyes until you are all cartooned out, and then you wonder what we funny fools are up to on the Org and you pop back deal

I think you have done an excellent job in moderating, IMO you are the bestest mod headbang but now we have enough mods to look after this crazay place, and you can sit back and drink your tea and relax.. and then maybe come back and post your funny shit again.. giggle

Maybe you need to hang up that moderating hat for now, but come back as an Orger again, cos you will be missed terribly cry I wanna laff with you, chat more with you more, maybe meet you sometime in RL nod

But whatever you decide I hope you have much happiness in what you do flower

Much Love heart hug kisses

Breaks are VERY nice. I've taken many this year and it's really changed my perception of when/why I come here. This is only a choice you can make, but I suggest taking another announced break that lasts a bit longer and then decide what you really wanna do.

(of course this is easy for me to say, too, cos I know I'll see you around! smile )

Teacher

I have only read Endo's post, so I might be saying things people already said.

There is nothing saying that you have to log on here every day or every week just because you are a mod. Unless you don't want to visit the site AT ALL for a really extended period of time I don't think there's any need for an official break for you. It's a nice feeling to be wanted and needed but it can also become a yoke, I understand that.
I started coming to this site six years ago, and like Endo, my reasons for coming here and the frequency of the visits have changed. In the beginning it was a fascinating new world for me and my visits extended to the point that it became an addiction in the summer of 2002. Since I don't like addictions of ANY kind I weaned myself off of it by a four month break. Since then I have taken shorter and longer breaks and I now come here almost exclusively to keep up with friends that I cannot phone due to various reasons.
If I don't feel like getting on the Org I won't, then I'll read a book, watch a movie, take a bath, walk the dog or do whatever.

I agree with Endo that Org breaks are healthy, but I hope that you'll settle for just spending less time here. I think the new moderators can manage without their Org mommy being there every minute to help out wink and everything will be just as crazy when you DO decide to log on again. Just try to relax and take your time in doing stuff the way you want it.

You are much loved and appreciated Deja, here as in the real world. rose
