Chicago is slowly, but steadily sinking

Geologists say Chicago is sinking at a rate of a millimeter per year, which is four inches every century. According to the Chicago Tribune this is a project that experts at Northwestern University and the American and Canadian Geo-Physical Unions have been working on for years but they only released the findings on Wednesday after years of reading global positioning satellites. Although it doesn't seem like a lot, it is the same slow and steady change that formed the continents after the Ice Age. Geologists say the melting of glaciers 12,000 years ago released a great weight off North America and as the Canadian earth rises up from that release, Chicago is being pulled down, much like a seesaw. This sinking is also affecting Lake Michigan water levels. It’s like a bowl of water: if the bowl is raised on its north side, water sloshes to the south.
