The same thing happened to my GF.
She was walking down the stairs holding a cat and she fell and now people think i'm abusing here.
We're on holiday now and you should see the looks she gets when they see the bruises on her arms.
And i'm trying to look as innocent as possible.

That reminds me of one time when my ex slipped and fell down the steps in our town home (and she really flew down them too!!). For a couple of weeks, whenever we would go out, I'd get dirty looks from women who would spot the bruises on her. Funny thing about that is, I despise men who beat their women (or children, or animals). In fact, about the only times in my life that I've ever been violent were when I've seen something like this going down, so it was rather ironic that folks thought I did it to her.

I remember (i was kind of young), i was carrying a toddler down the stairs, She was kind of heavy. I ended up tripping and rolling down the stairs with her still in my arms. My mom was a little mad it me, it wasn't her child. It's funny now. She wasn't her though.
