My ex was homeschooled his whole life and he is THE most intelligent person I've ever encountered in my life. However, he's extremely good at English/lit/theory/etc, but crap at everything else (maths, science, etc) - he said it's because due to the laidback homeschooling schedule, he was able to do what he liked all day long (e.g. reading) and hardly ever had to study anything else.

Arn'tb the social skills you learn at school just as important as the acedemic ones?

My girlfriend is one of the brightest, intelligent people I know and has a GPA of A- ....she was homeschooled most of her life up until college. If it's done right, it can be great. The only drawback I might suggest is that sometimes there is a lack of the kind of social interaction that school offers every day.

From what I've heard there can be issues involving college admission and proving that one's homeschooling is equivalent to a high school education. Granted, a homeschooled student could take the GED, but the "dropout" stigma of a GED might hurt the applicant if he or she were applying to a competitive college.

I also share the concern of missing out on the social interaction that a traditional high school provides. For me, I think it was a good thing to have that experience. OTOH, I've known people whose high school experiences were pure hell, and for them, a "non-traditional" educational environment (e.g., homeschooling, early college admission, or an "alternative school") seemed clearly superior.

Would I homeschool my kids? No, because I'm not having any. Also, I've done some teaching myself (human sexuality at the college level), and I don't think I'm well-suited to being a teacher.

When I was in school, I didn't believe in homeschooling. I thought it was evil .Even though my school experience from elementary to high school was not pleasant and pure hell, I am grateful that I got to participate in different clubs, organizations, and extra curricular activities. You kind of miss out on things like Pep rallies and the Prom when you're homeschooled. The way people are half-assed raising their children these days, I may want to homeschool my own children just because I wouldn't want to them to be executed at school like the victims of Columbine and the other schools that have had experiences like that
